I am, superficially, the profile of the most likely MAGA voter. I'm a Gen X (just turned forty-eight today) white man born in a rural county, currently living in a different rural county, son of white, evangelical Protestant Christians who have consistently voted Republican starting in 1980. I voted Republican in every Presidential election (except for 2008) until 2016. I consistently voted Republican in mid-term elections prior to 2018 (well, I skipped 2006 due to moving-related and bureaucratic issues). I voted for Pat Buchanan in the 1996 Presidential primaries (though that was a protest vote against Dole). My brother is MAGA. My sister is MAGA. Son of my friends at work are MAGA. My father is an ordained Baptist minister, and I mean the hellfire and brimstone, revival meeting, fundamentalist type. I never even smoked any pot until 2006. I never drank at all until 2003. I have been married to a highly apolitical woman for almost seventeen years and with her for almost twenty. I am a staunch supporter of the Second Amendment. I am a supporter of Israel in principle. I was once a member of the John Birch Society (obviously not nowadays).

But I also write smut. I also did smoke pot at times after those time frames. I am also bisexual. My sister-in-law (one of them, that is) is transgender. I am polyamorous. I'm autistic. I'm opposed to Netanyahu and blame him for what happened on October 7th and what's happened to the hostages since to a large extent, and I oppose his settlements. I, while still a registered Republican, as I didn't quit the GOP until May of 2016, also donated to Bernie Sanders in his 2016 campaign (and I donated to him and a bunch of other Democratic candidates in 2019/2020). I donated money to the Human Rights Campaign. People often have another side to them that doesn't show up on the superficial profile, and that other side to them can make a huge difference that sometimes is overlooked. While I once opposed the ACA, I now support it, even if I prefer single-payer. Even when I was still a Republican, I voted for a Libertarian instead of McCain because I couldn't stomach the thought of Sarah Palin being a geriatric heartbeat away from the Presidency. Even when still a Republican, I voted for the Democratic candidate for Sheriff of Maricopa County in order to dump Joe Arpaio, a corrupt and brutal thug of a lawman. That was in 2012, an election where I also voted for Mitt Romney.

Oh, and I am currently a caregiver to two shut-ins, one of them my own wife, and one of them (her sister) terminally ill with end-stage cirrhosis. What Kamala Harris said about caregiving for her mother, while not the decisive reason, certainly helped her with me. Oh, and I'm a grandfather of two girls, and if you think that I want them to grow up in the world that Trump would give us, you can think again.

Maga men seem to want different things for their daughters than their wives. Many wouldn't want their daughter's husbands to treat them like they treat their own wives.
