RIP Coach John Thompson. I can't even say how big a fan I was in my youth. As coach of the Georgetown Hoyas, he always stressed a disciplined defensive style of play in an era of basketball where slam dunks made the highlight reels and everyone idolized the high scorers. He was equally tenacious in the academic goals he set for his players. At 6' 10" he could be an intimidating presence, but he was a true leader and role model. Someone to look up to literally and figuratively. I haven't followed college basketball much since he left Georgetown in 1999, but seeing him in the news today brought back a flood of wonderful memories. Hoya paranoia.
