Well, no, in defamation you sue for damage to your reputation and ask the jury to put a money value on it. Proof of actual monetary losses helps but is not strictly necessary. And it's really hard for a public figure -- you have to expect to be lied about a lot anyway -- so you have to show the defendant acted with "actual malice."

It is easier to win defamation suits in the UK than in the U.S. -- that's why the Church of Scientology likes to sue in the UK when it can. I suspect the difference is for cultural reasons -- Brits put a much higher value on reputation than Yanks do.
