Why do people do drugs?

And my mind is not closed. I invite you again to educate me as to what drug you consider safe. Also, why is it, exactly, that you need (I'm sure you'll say it's "want"), to use chemicals to alter your perception?

For the fourth time, I no longer indulge in recreational drug use, and have not done so for many years.

I have provided my personal list of safer drugs. To continue with my earlier analogy, drugs are like sex. There is no "safe" sex, and only "safer" drugs.

That's a philosophical question. I'll field this one. Cogito ergo sum. You don't take drugs, you don't know about other mental states of being (and I'm not talking in metaphors). You do take drugs and, you guessed, you experience a shift in perception which is breath-taking. Cogito ergo sum How can you truly be, if you've only thought on one level? 'You think, therefore you're right' doesn't work the same as when you've exposed yourself to other ways of thinking.

No, because I never denied that drugs might be bad for me. Have you missed every point I've made about educated choices? Every time I took a drug, I calculated the risks, weighed the percieved pro's against the percieved con's, and made an educated choice. I hoped for the best, but I was willing to bear the consequences of the worst.

Unlike many on this thread, I never tried to dictate anyone else's choice or made that type of value judgement. I never told people they were fools for not taking drugs.

I respected everyone's personal choice.

And in my Hot Youth (as Byron says), I bet I coulda matched you drug for drug and drank you under the table. So I'm not just talkin outta my ass about drug abuse. My very judgemental opinion is that using drugs is a very dangerous and destructive cop out.

So you seem to be in total agreement then? You've taken, and you know what you're talking about. You've came to the conclusion (after plenty of experience it sounds like) that there are no 'pros'. Others haven't. Others still want to try. Why not let them?

There are pro's to drug use for people willing to accept the risks associated with it and make informed decisions. Ally's cogito ergo sum and Sparky's LSD posts are two examples.

I also strongly believe that all drugs should be immediatly legalized. Decriminalizing drugs would be the smartest thing the Us could do. People taking drugs are not criminals. The so-called War on Drugs is ridiculous. All the billions of dollars wasted on this would be much better spent offering help and rehabilitation to those people realizing the destruction drugs have visited upon them and wanting help.

Listen: Truce. Most of those nearest and most dear to me use drugs. Many of them have ended up in jails, institutions, or dead. I hate drugs. It scares me when they are portrayed as fun or beneficial or simply harmless. I'm not Christian or anything, but I believe that drugs are a form of incarnate evil. Devious, sneaky evil, masquaradeing as something, fun, trendy, spiritually enlightening.

This is my opinion and it is what I believe in. That's a lot to me, doubless nothing to others.

...The reason is because he always asks people who get my procedure done what they want and he'll pretty much write it for them. I asked for tylenol. He says some people have a list right down to the exact milligram and time when they want to take it of prescription drugs they want... What makes perfectly healthy people want to kill off their brain cells and debilitate themselves? The pleasure of it? The rush? The high? Peer pressure? Because they look cool with powder on their noses? Is there some need in here that I don't understand?

You talk about a medical condition and mention a prescription from your doctor, yet the conversation quickly slips into recreational drugs. I'd like to mention that many people take drugs/medication because living without the relief they offer is hell. I have a close friend who tried every imaginable treatment for her illness before finally agreeing to take meds that help her manage symptoms. So, for some, there is every reason to take drugs and its certainly not for the fun of it.

Well fine. However growing up around 90% of the people I knew had smoked pot. Most of them regularly. Any in Jail? Nope. Any Dead? Well one guy I knew was killed by being hit by a train. Most of the wacky pot heads in high school or college are simply white collar guys now. Most of them successful proffesionals.

Drugs, in moderation don't prevent you from doing remarkable things with your life(If you're a musician I'd contend that they help you but regardless) Both of the guys who ran for president used drugs at some point. I bet almost all of the idiot Baby Boomers who run the world did stupid things.

Drugs, in healthy doses, can be as harmless as a cold beer on a hot day.

Umm. I don't think *anyone* is arguing that we should make appropriate use of prescription drugs illegal, or even that it's immoral or unethical.

KM was simply stating she could manage her pain with Tylenol. More power to her. I can't even manage a headache with Tylenol. I think the experience she had with her doctor simply prompted a wider question, which she brought here.
