She DOES! CNN just showed a shot from over her left shoulder, and I saw some kind of paper/cards in her hand, and then they showed a long shot when it went to a Biden answer, and I could see her *shuffling* through something white!

Eh, that's no biggie. I mean, we all know she went to "debate camp" last week.

Yes, she does have notes that she keeps consulting. What a crock. It would be nice if she actually answered the question that's asked rather than going off on a tangent that has little to do with the question.

Everyone used notes including Obama and McCain.

They are writing down any points the other candidate makes that they want to counter and maybe some key points to hit.

I don't know if this is good or bad but Biden choking over his daughter is going to be the icon of this, you watch.

FINALLY, someone calling attention to the 'maverick' title! I love what Biden just said about that.

ETA: Yes, they use notes. But most of them don't read them verbatim.

Are they allowed to bring prepared notes into the debate, or just allowed to write down notes as they think of them during the debate?

It's a big distinction for me. I wouldn't care if they had like one prepared sheet/card of key statistics to reference, and they should certainly be allowed write reminders to themselves during, but I don't think it's right for them to bring whole "presentations" in with them.

She was competent. In a world in love with mediocre she done good.

I think the base is gonna go wild, I think the independents aren't really buying it. When she chokes she says lots of buzzwords with no verb connecting them. The fake fargo ya sure isn't going to work for people who are looking for an actual answer to things like "what will happen if I have to declare bankruptcy, am I actually going to be protected?"

Obviously that wasn't IN her notes, because she thought that her dispersal of the oil money to her constituents seemed to have something to do with that answer for non-Alaska residents.

Can we hook those feelgood CNN dials up to genital shockers any time anyone says "main street" or "wall street" for the rest of the cycle?

I'd like to add "maverick" too but maybe that's too partisan.

You know, CNN called the last debate about a draw, with a slight edge to Obama. As the days passed, more and more people felt Obama did better. I think tonight the people who are saying she did well are just trying to hedge their bets. She did all right, but it's almost anti-climactic for Republicans. Hooray, she, uh, didn't suck? I think it just won't add up this election.

I thought it was pretty boring overall. I have to differ with my favorite guy David Gergen on that one this time, I didn't find Biden hitting anything out of the ballpark either, but that wasn't the point. Maybe in playing it suave he meant it was the best debate he's ever done, doing what he had to strategically in being cordial and saving the vinegar for McCain.

She kept slipping into bake sale talk.

"Don'cha know"

"Gosh darn it!"

I know CNN is supposed to be the bastion of the left, but really I think it and FOX as the same thing in a way, coke and pepsi, far more alike than different - so I think it's mainstream-responsive. And that did not play with anyone in their focus. I think it's gonna wear badly over the week.

Well, perhaps there are lowered expectations for Biden as well. He didn't say anything too nutty, you know? I thought he did quite well, given the speeches I've heard him give. He came off as knowledgable, experienced and sort of charming in his own way. I've been bored by Biden before, and he didn't bore me.

True, true. He didn't fuck up and that was a worry. I thought he had a very human moment when the Iraq thing came up and connected, and the male feelgood meters even hung tight when he teared up.

Well, you all did all you could to frame her as a retard the last few weeks. She stood toe to toe with a senator who had been in Washington for 36 years and held her own. With no commercials. I predict a dead even race early next week. And Joe did well. The monitor was great. I'm going to send her an email if I find her address.

Gwen? Yeah she is a class act and has taken so much shit this week.

Hey, I was the one saying I think the "reading magazines" thing wasn't a case of duhhhhh but how she was being bludgeoned into saying nothing about anything lest someone say something. I don't think she's a drooling moron, I just don't think she's especially Big League.

She held her own as in she didn't sound like she did on Couric. She didn't manage to answer several important questions, she didn't convince anyone that she's capable of stepping in in the event of McCain demise, I strongly doubt, and she didn't win.

But she probably is going to stop actively hurting the ticket as much as she has. Like as in a LOT.

Her mantra seemed to be "when in doubt smile and wink!"

I love how she held her baby about five seconds and then handled the child over to her next smallest to hold. My daughter about went while over that.

"Hey! I was never allowed to hold my baby brother while standing up."

"Yep, because I cared if you dropped him."

Toe to toe? Let's not go crazy.

And the reason she could do that well is the McCain camp went insane preparing her. Even with all that she still rambled and made it clear she is out of her league. I'm happy to be generous about it. But this was not a draw.

First of all I would NEVER use that word.

Second, just because debate boot camp kept her from gibbering (what a rip off, btw, I was really looking forward to that! What will SNL do with this???), doesn't mean she is knowledgeable about much of anything.

Perhaps she was picked in part, because she makes a good meat puppet. With enough round the clock coaching and notes, she can parrot reasonably well.

You know what would be shocking? A political debate in which the politicians actually answer the questions put to them.

I think with some notable exceptions we got some tastes of that last week. And boring it was.

Yeah but only absentee, homeschooling? (what was that about public schooling tonight?), hockey mom's, really know what it's like to raise kids or worry.

Honestly, I still haven't decided who I will vote for [reminder - pretty conservative thinker here], and I wanted to get a feel for the VP candidates; i don't really know much about either of them.

What I walked away with was Biden is politically sophisticated, which (in my book) is a good thing. I get the feeling he can graciously (and firmly) represent US interests with foreign dignitaries, on a world stage, without significantly embarrassing us.

Palin came across as, well, a bake sale mom. This does not impress me. I sat there thinking - do you know what it's inappropriate to do the "ya know" *winky winky* thing? Do you know when to shut up and listen to the person speaking? How will you carry yourself at a State dinner? when a foreign dignitary says something controversial or rude, will you respond appropriately? How will you bring other countries on board with our goals? Red peep toe heels and "gosh golly" don't cut in in the big leagues. I mean ye gods even *I* know when to not use "y'all" in conversation, and as a Texan people expect it from me...

What I dig about that moment is that it's got its finger on the pulse. We are ALL trying to raise our kids (well those of us who are) and a lot of fathers are more involved and more invested emotionally than ever before. I know that H is as ferocious in defense of, as passionate about and as tied to his children as any woman I've ever met.

It really says a lot to me about how different this is than the Ferraro/Bush era.

Was anyone else yelling at their TV when CNN decided to make it boys vs. girls on the emotodial thing? As a vagina-having person I was really pissed.

Honey I want to buy you a dozen sympathy roses over the passing of Bill Buckley - your kind is the most under attack of all. The conservative who values intellect. And I thought the last 8 were bad for me.

The facts usually are. That's why these clown-like distractions, aka Palin, are so fun (for some).
