I'm still waiting for the mandatory democrat hunting trip. Think Obama has ever fired a gun before? Maybe Cheney will take him quail hunting.

Having shot a gun is not a quality I look for in my politicians. I'm much more concerned about their views on issues.

To an extent, it is for me, though not specifically guns. It's something that shows that the politician can get outside of his element and do things that don't require a suit and briefcase. I feel the same way about Obama playing hoops (pretty well) with GI's on a trip to the Middle East or Hoover playing Hoover Ball on the White House lawn.

That's not just teens "these days" thank you very much, that's teens since the invention of the teenager.
Good point. I know I did a lot of things my parents didn't want or wouldn't have wanted me to do. In fact, I did some things I didn't really want to do but did anyway from some idiotic sense of rebellion and independence.

To correct and clarify my statement, "Teens these days are quite liable to say - and do - on videotape and/or in public anything they think at the moment would be fun, cool or that their parents wouldn't want them to do and then publish it to the net or allow their friends to do so."

Better? :)

Yes, thank you ;)

I don't hate her. I feel the same way about all politicians. I simply do NOT give a shit. Not impressed by the image she's trying to give off, though. I know plenty of tough, intelligent rural women, and she ain't one of 'em. She just comes off looking like a poseur to me.

Is this like the HRC cookie bake off or can girls just go shoot some tin cans or a Moose or Dick Cheney or something?

Are we talking about the same Obama that the NRA says would be the most anti-gun President in American history?

Because I trust all NRA talking points.

Do you think you can have a different attitude when your state includes CHICAGO than when your state includes Anchorage, but feel differently about it on the federal level? Because Obama seems to be pretty hands-off about the second and not interested in going there lately.

If you think every Dem is anti second you haven't been paying a lot of attention lately. There wasn't unified support around the DC ban, and it was overturned.

I personally am a rarity, an *extremely* pro-second fairly radical left person. To the point where I can see the wisdom of bans on assault or bans in urban areas, but I can't really get behind them from a principle stance.
That is, for the record, more staunchly pro-second than people I've had to educate on the right about my feelings about guns because they're assumed to be a certain way.

A lot of those people like bans for you know - THOSE people. I don't like bans for people who have to live in handgun warzones. The people who should not have them will continue to have them and the only thing legislation will do is make the legislator feel like he's doing something good as he goes to sleep in his low crime gated community at night.

Incidentally, I changed my mind about this. I didn't start off with these opinions.

I don't think Obama is going to take away the guns. I think there are much bigger fish to fry at the moment as it is. Just like I think no one's going to take away Roe, really. They NEED it to keep us yelling at each other instead of demanding accountability for the giant sonic booms emanating from Wall St.

I would like certain outcomes on gay marriage, the right of a woman to determine her destiny in the early stages of pregnancy, and I'd love to see less God all over the place when it's time to talk about the country, but right now I can't afford to let these things dictate what I do as much as whether I think I'm going to have a bridge in my state fall on me or not. I know that seems abstract and alarmist, but that is my personal metaphor for what every man for himself has done for us as a PUBLIC.

I personally think shooting wolves out of planes is moronic. However it's not a high priority outrage for me on the long list of outrages. In a perfect world the wolves would at least have glocks. Can we move on to other problems?

I don't hate Sarah Palin. But I want to make sure I have my facts right first.

At first blush, I am inclined to say a whole lot. From a political perspective, I am sure she and I are miles apart. However also much of what I read is contradictory or at the very least, meaningless in an argument.

Consider the "victims must pay for the rape kit" argument. I have read about 30 different versions of this story and the majority implicate the Wasila police chief for not wanting to spend the money. This particular cause is very near and dear to my heart but I still want to get it right. Unfortunately, I haven't seen enough to blame Palin. Even though I would like to.

On the earmarks subject...most of Alaska's earmarks were sponsored by Ted Stevens. I can't tell if Sarah and Ted are sleeping together but I'm not yet ready to argue that she's responsible for the earmarks.

The only argument I have up to this point is her opinion on oil exploration and global warming. Both of which I vastly disagree with. Oh yes, her lack of experience combined with questions about her education. (I will leave her religious beliefs aside for the moment.)

I'm not trying to support Palin. I'm just trying to dig through the biased (both ways) reporting to understand who she actually is. If I'm going to argue, I want my facts to be straight. (Sorry....High school debate team...we never die.)

This is my issue with elections. We are informed only by those who have a strong leaning either for or against their subject. Objective reporting seems to have gone the way of dinosaur.

And I just wish that I had more time to find the objective information....

We're still back to her complete lack of experience. And "guys and gals"?

Guys and gals?

We're at new lows. Call me shallow but I am up nights thinking about that creepy Fargo outtake fake rural cute announcing "OK, guys, I got a call on the red phone dont'cha know. Rapture's in five, thanks America!"

We all gotta go, but that's NOT my inclination, that is NOT the last sound I wanna hear.

Trust me. I'm not looking to support her. But if I'm going to argue, I want a few more undeniable facts.

And as far as the "Rapture" analogy goes...we've been living with that one for a while.... (remember, I lived in North Carolina for a while. I should be dead already. And not the rapturous kind of dead either. Actually, I think I should be pretty crispy by now. )

Sorry, I am the cranky devil's advocate tonight. Blame it all on a certain preteen's homework assignment. And a certain college kid knows-more-than-the parents child.

Damn kids.

I'll try to mellow out a bit by tomorrow.

60,000? to see the Anti-Obama? No wonder you are pissed.

THE VILLAGES -- Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin told wildly cheering, flag-waving, chanting supporters that John McCain is "the only great man in this race" and promised Sunday he will fix the nation's economy if voters give the GOP four more years in the White House.

"He won't say this, so I'll say it for him," the Alaska governor said in an almost confidential tone at the close of her first Florida stump speech. "There is only one man in this election who has ever really fought for you. John McCain wore the uniform of his country for 22 years -- talk about tough."

The Villages, a vast, upscale planned community north of Orlando, has about 70,000 mostly adult residents -- many of them military retirees -- who vote reliably Republican in statewide races. Tens of thousands inched along roads into the picturesque town square of the complex, where they stood in sweltering heat for about four hours as local GOP officials and a country band revved up the crowd.

"Sa-Rah! Sa-Rah!" they chanted at every mention of her name, applauding loudly and waiving tiny American flags that were distributed -- along with free water bottles -- by local volunteers. The fire chief estimated the crowd at 60,000.

Trust me. I'm not looking to support her. But if I'm going to argue, I want a few more undeniable facts.

She's the governor of Alaska for one year, the President is 72 and has health issues, and she's an independent-leaning prospect who's vetoed large swaths of health human services educational and cultural programs for the PR of "look, a surplus!" and breaks for property owners, which, even in Alaska, isn't everyone.

(I don't know if Alaska has a renters' credit - in MN we at least pass some of the prop. tax relief onto renters in certain income guidelines - anyone know?)

Personally, I don't think that this is a person capable of making good decisions for the 80 percent of us who live clustered around metro areas. That's a lot of people to write off in the "small town" fetish. I don't think she understands the issues, the lives of people reliant on social services whether through their own fault or simply their own aging, and what it actually does to say "look we have a surplus" in a heavily populated state.

That's my less reactionary misgiving.

Maybe so.

Obama still pulled 75,000 (in his mind anyway) and has registered so many more new voters it simply ain't funny.

This whole "crowd size" thing is an interesting dick contest.

Why's her approval in polls so low?

I'd be crying in my beer looking at fivethirtyeight too. It was bad for dems last week but it wasn't that bad.

We're Slippery Rock against Notre Dame. And it's tied at halftime.

I agree the fat lady has not sung.

However

the rhetoric is lib, but the pies are pulled from aggregates of lots and lots and lots of polls. The math is math - it's pure and numeric.

That's not a tie.

I can totally get behind this. But again, if I'm going to argue why...I haven't seen enough factual "for or against." On the other hand, maybe it doesn't exist. By that I mean she hasn't been around long enough for facts to amass.

I still, in my gut, think she's a nut (at least a different kind of nut than I am.)

But the logical me wants unbiased facts to support my argument. The emotional me is inclined to think otherwise.

That's all.

It's been a good week for Obama. Still nothing but a shapshot. I'm glad the stupid polling is pleasing you now.

It may not in a week. I'm more of a hm aren't measurements interesting person. When your guy was up as well. And I agree it's a snapshot and it's probably what I'd consider "overcorrective."

I didn't vote, because none of your options fit.

No idea what you're referencing here, since I can't see the results.

Yes, you can. Right next to 'vote now' is an option that says 'view poll results'.

Why's her approval in polls so low?

I have to say that personally, I don't take the polls very seriously. They supposedly poll evenly, but I've never been polled and I don't know any other conservatives who have. And that includes people who've been of voting age for 60+ years.

Well, I've been polled by the republican party, but that's just for their records - I don't see them stating that's a poll of how American's feel.
