Wish for Something Better (closed)

Sam glanced up from his plate at that. "Yeah, I've uh... I've heard the stories. It's kind of a pop culture trope at this point." He shoveled a whole egg roll into his mouth to keep himself from blurting out something stupid. In conversation he was used to listening to other people talk. But Emily didn't have much of a past to reminisce about it seemed. He had to lead the conversation. He felt a little out of his element.

In an effort to get through that brief moment of awkwardness he got up and loaded up a plate for the grill with noodles, chicken, mushrooms, broccoli, beef, and crab. He asked for teriyaki sauce and waited patiently for his food before returning to the table. "So... who was your last master. If you don't mind my asking."

She looked at him and noticed he was having some difficulty on coming up with something to say, so when he came out with a question finally. She thought about it, and smiled. "Four hundred years ago my master was a spoiled nine year old, his name was Luka Corrus. He was spoiled and evil, at first I felt sorry for him. His father abused him, would take a branch off a tree and beat him with it till he was bleeding, begging his father to stop. But he had dug up my ring, woke me up and wanted revenge for what his father did to him" She sighed. "Unfortunately there isn't really anything I can't do and the kid knew it. He wished for his father to be killed, and I was forced to grant it"

Sam was silent at that. What do you say to something like that? Should you say anything? Every revelation about Emily just made him wonder if there had been any joy at all in her existence. What life had she been forced to abandon for this. He reached across the table and placed a hand over hers. He looked her in the eyes and said, "I'm going to set you free when all this is done. I promise I'll find a way."

Looking at him she smiled softly, enjoying the feel of contact with a man. One who was good, she could see it in his eyes. Placing her other hand on his, squeezing it softly. "Thank you, but be careful don't make promises you do not know if you can keep. You don't owe me anything, I'm well over a thousand years old. I wouldn't even know what to do with myself, but know if you were to free me from my fate. I would be a normal human being, never able to grant another wish. Though I wouldn't mind a retirement, but just so you know, I don't trick people. Not like the other soulless assholes that have no business having a job like this"

"If I find what I want out of life, then I won't need anymore wishes," Sam reasoned. "I can go out and ask for what I want." On an impulse, he leaned forward and kissed Emily on the cheek. It had been a long time since he'd been this close to a beautiful woman. He was mildly surprised to find that there were images flashing across his mind of the two of them... a series of what-ifs. He wasn't sure it was appropriate to be thinking this way about a woman who literally couldn't say no.

"I was raised to believe that I should help people." He tried to divert his mind back on track. "I want to help you. I'm going to try."

She listened to him and then when he kissed her cheek, she was taken back. But the look on his face, she could read it very well. "Sam, when it comes to my well being I can say no. If you for example wanted me to have sex with you, and I said no and wouldn't do it. Then I can reject it, that kind of thing I can say no to. But like I said it was just an example, perhaps you are my knight in shinning armor to rescue me from this endless nightmare I'm in. But I like the thought of someone caring for me, even if it was just friendship" She really did like him, being what she was. She was able to see the good and bad in people.

His cheeks flushed slightly at the thought of the two of them having sex. He couldn't stop the mental images that flashed across his brain. That she seemed so cognizant of what he was thinking made him wonder if she could read his thoughts. He tried to avoid thinking about her naked and writhing beneath... too late.

He cleared his throat and shoveled a mouthful of beef and noodles into his mouth to try give him something to focus on other than those big, soulful eyes. How long had it been since he was last with a woman? He hadn't been keeping track. He had just been on autopilot for so long.

She actually giggled "I don't read minds Sam, I read a persons body language that's how I get a feel about what people are thinking. And even if I could read a person's mind, id never do it unless it was an emergency or if I had permission from the person I wanted to read the mind of. See how different I am from the stories that people tell about genius? I'm the last nice one in the world I think." She said simply.

Sam was quiet for a moment. If she could figure all that out, she probably also knew what sort of fantasies had flitted through his head. "That is really spooky," he said at last. "Might take some getting used to."

He finished off the plate in a hurry, wolfing it down as if he were starving but really just wanting to get his mind off the weird feeling of being this open book that she could read to easily. He got up and went for another plate, this time going for all the spicy foods.

She giggled some "You maybe an open book to me but your not to other people, I'm magical remember Sam? I learned how to read people for my own protection. You humans are creatures of action Ive learned over years of being what I am. You can be an intimidating people, maybe kinda silly to say because I look human. But as long as I have magic, I'm far from" She sighed. "But helps me fit in"

At that point, Sam just gave up. It seemed there was nothing he could hide from Emily. On the positive side, if she knew what he was thinking earlier, she was polite enough not to bring it up. He gulped down a mouthful of ice water to soothe the burning in his mouth from the spicy food followed by a mouthful of white rice. Perhaps he needed to change the subject.

"Since we're going to see the world, is there anywhere you'd like to see?"

Thinking about it for a moment, she had seen many countries, knew every language there was to know. Looking at him she shrugged "I dunno Ive seen many in my many years of being what I am. I know over twelve languages, so it shouldn't be that big of a language gap with me at least" She grinned at him. "Though I wouldn't mind going to China or Tokyo always wanted to go there"

"I'm sure we could make time to visit the Forbidden City." Sam finished off his plate and sighed contentedly. "Haven't eaten that well in a long time. You up for desert?" The desert selection at the buffet was always impressive. He figured he'd need a scoop or two of ice cream to cool the burning in his mouth that the last plate had caused. Otherwise, he'd probably take a sampling of everything.

She looked at him "Forbidden City?" She didn't understand what he meant from that. "Are no one allowed to go there?" She said curiously, much like a small child asking why all the time. She looked at him with almost innocent eyes like a child, and thought about it for a moment. Getting up she got some of this chocolate ice cream, though she didn't understand what ice cream was.

Sam smiled slightly at that as the two of them got up to go to the desert spread. "It used to be the imperial palace in Beijing starting in the Ming dynasty. These days it's a museum open to the public." He loaded his plate with brownies, cookies, ambrosia salad, and a bowl of cotton candy ice cream. He hadn't gotten to indulge his sweet tooth in a long time, and wondered if he was going a bit overboard.

They came back to the table and he immediately took a spoonful of ambrosia salad and savored the taste for a minute. "I was thinking we'd also make a stop in Kyoto at some point. I'd love to see the old temples, maybe attend one of the folk festivals."

She watched him and sighed a bit, thinking for a moment and began to eat what she got. Looking down at her plate, which had two brownies, a cookie and two spoonfuls of chocolate ice cream, but then looked at him. "You pregnant or something?" She giggled trying to make a joke, though it would probably fail. Sighing softly she looked at him. "Nothing wrong with indulging on sweet foots once in a while, though Ive never had what is this you call it. Ice Cream? "

Sam cocked a little half smile at her joke. "No, if I were pregnant I would have sandwiched it between two pancakes, with some pepperoni and mayo. And yes, it's called ice cream. When we're in Italy we'll get some gelato. It's like ice cream multiplied by ten, if that makes any sense." He was still getting used to her being able to read him so well. Again, it made him think that she shouldn't think anything dirty... and that just made him think of dirty things again. He went back into his desert, trying to give himself something else to think about.

She ate her sweet selections first, it was a good time she was having with him. Taking a deep breath she finished her food and pushed it away, she ate to much and felt like she would pop. Though she knew she wouldn't, cooking at him. "Last time I had been fed like that was." Thinking for a moment, a flash of a little girl crying and starving. Then the flash stopped. "Never actually" She said with a grin.

"Well look forward to more of it. One of the best things about traveling is new and exotic food and a lot of it." He paid the check and took Emily's hand as he led her back to the car. The drive back home was quiet, but pleasant. The thought occurred to him that he didn't have a guest room, nor did he want to send Emily back into her ring. That just felt cruel.

They arrived back at Sam's home and Sam considered what to do as he flicked on the lights. "I... really don't want to make you go back into that ring. Is there somewhere you'd like to sleep? Seriously, anywhere in the house, just let me know." A part of him hoped she would ask to share his bed with him. Shit, would she know he thought that?

She was taken back by his attitude, she had never met anyone like him. Course being stuck in a ring for most of the time of her life, looking at him she smiled. Looking around his place and knew there was no guest room and thought about it for a moment. "Mind sharing a bed with me?" She wouldn't mind spending some time with someone she could trust, world was hard enough. She had a lot of fun, and was glad that he showed her a piece of his world to her.

His cheeks flushed a bit, but he shook his head and gestured toward the bedroom. "There's a few extra pairs of lounge pants and undershirts in the top second drawer down in the dresser. I'm going to be up for at least another hour, but if you want to turn in now..."

Sam went back to his chair and picked up his copy of "Hero with a Thousand Faces," picking up where he left off. "Please. Make yourself comfortable."

She smiled at him listing to what he said, nodding she went into the bedroom. And got one of his shirts and pants, snapping her fingers both fit her perfectly. Walking back out she looked at him. "How do I look?" She asked curious, she chuckled some and sat on the couch relaxing a bit.

Sam did a slight double take. She must have used magic to make the clothes fit because she certainly was daintier than him. His years on the high school track team and his jogging in the park had helped him keep a trim figure, but there was no way that she wore the same waist size that he did. He put the book down, knowing there was no way he'd be able to concentrate at this point. He needed another distraction.

"Do you want to watch a movie?" he asked. "I can get one started and get changed. I'll even make some popcorn if you want."

She watched him, and couldn't help but smiled and nodded. Sounded good, to watch this thing they called a movie. Remembering his memories since she learned much of everything from him, in just that simple touch. She realized what a movie was, and just relaxed back on the couch. Yawning some, she enjoyed the feel of being out of that damn room. It was beyond perfect right now, she watched him and even heard him making pop corn in the back.

Sam put the popcorn bag in the microwave first and then moved to his room to get changed. He came out in flannel lounge pants and a gray V-neck undershirt. He retrieved the popcorn before it burned and prepared the DVD player. "This is one of my favorites." The Adventures of Tintin. He had been quick to snag it up when it came out on DVD earlier that year.

"Some of the best action sequences Spielberg's done since Raiders of the Lost Ark," he remarked, forgetting that he was talking to someone who had never seen an Indiana Jones movie. Or any movie for that matter. "Uh... long story." He shoved a few kernels into his mouth, not trusting himself to keep from blurting out something stupid otherwise.
