Worlds Apart

Kelly heard someone scream and she knew it wasn't her. For some reason when the living ceiling fell on them her body went instinctively into action. Moving swifter than she had ever remembered moving before, she reached into her pocket and lifted out another vial. She didn't know what was in it...no, she did but she couldn't tell how she did. This was really starting to creep her out.

The beetles fell and those who seemed to be able to use magic had somehow opened the door. Running for the light, Kelly threw the vial over her shoulder and it instantly became a fog as it hit the floor covering the beetles and causing them to back off.

Brushing those that still clung to her off as she scrambled into the tunnel she suddenly came to a screetching halt and held up her hand to the others.

"Hold on!" She said making them stop and turn to her. Her eyes were roaming around the tunnel with a practiced ease picking out irregularities in the rock face and her face was grim. "Traps!" She said as she saw places that were definately manmade but which were invisible to the eye if you did not know what you were looking for.

Walking forward cautiously and slowly, she crouched down and pressed on the floor before her, feeling it give under her weight. A feeling that she should get out of the way and her body reacting to that gut instinct happened at the same time as spikes came threw various openings in the wall that had not been there before to pass by where she had just been seconds ago.

Breathing hard and looking at the metal tips that were now buried in the rocky tunnel floor she shivered. What in the world had possessed her to do that? But somehow she had known she could get away from whatever trap had lain in wait. Still it wasn't doing her nerves any good at all.

Standing she nodded. "I don't see anymore." Turning to her companions she shook her head. "I don't know." She said to their unanswered questions. "I just don't know how we are doing things like this when we have never done them before. But it just may be the key to us surviving."

Jasamine

We ran into the tunnel through the doorway and the other women used powders and vials to rid themselves of the beetles. Somehow the stuff missed Loki and I and we got the wrath of the remaining beetles. The hissing was growing louder and it was almost as if nobody else heard that either. What the hell was going on? I vaguely heard Kelly calling everyone to a halt and something about traps, before the fog and the weight of the giant insects started pulling me down to my knees.
Something or someone sure didn't want me here...

Loki was shocked when the beetles flew off the ceiling of the cave and seemed to attack them as one. He flailed around, trying to swat them off, but hey just seemed to keep coming in a never-ending stream. He smelled an odor coming from the insects and tried even harder to get them off of his body when he felt a sharp pain in his arm.

Loki's vision started blurring as he vaguely saw the others being rid of the beetles, except for him and Jasamine. He tried to take a step forward to gethelp when his knees buckled. Loki fell to the floor, his mind being covered in a thick veil of blackness.

sorian

Looking back i see that loki and jasmine never made it out of there starting to run twoard the entrance againCept this time i was going twoard the bugs

Jack

Jack ran out of the room swearing profusely. Bugs...why did it have to be bugs? Just as he reached the light filled doorway, he saw Sorian run past him beack into the beetles.

"Sorian! What are you-" Jack turned around and saw Loki and Jasamine on theirt knnes almost totally covered in the insects. Jack screeched to a halt and followed Sorian. It would take two to bring both of them back.

Jack ran through the bugs swinging his torch. The bugs scampered away from him from that position Mic had used. The others were burnt by the swinging flame. He hoped the spell wouldn't wear out...

Sorian had already reached the duo and had started to help Loki up. Jack swung his torch to get the beetles of them. He extended a hand out to Jasamine, and helped her to her feet. Still holding on to her hand, Jack ran back through the beetles to the group. They reached the other end, and Jack placed himself between Jasamine and the invading beetles, driving them off with the effects of the potion.

"You alright?" Jack asked, still looking away to see if Sorian was getting Loki out alright.

Mic

I took a deep breath and watched as time leapt into fast forward and everyone moved and shifted, the beetles swarming over the Jasmine and Loki. I was frozen as responses were made and the creatures finally scattered away from the light and then I noticed that Kelly had gone ahead and I could hear her voice as if through a fog mentioning traps.

"This is going to be interesting," I softly say shaking my head clear of the fog, "I'd suggest we'd best go single file, I'll take up the rear. It seems as if Kelly and her thieflike reflexes would be a natural choice for the lead. I'd suggest Jasmine take the central position and you guys can sort out where you'd like to be." I felt odd to be making any decision but the idea seemed to resonate and we shuffled around a bit before Kelly had decided how best to transverse the next chamber in what seemed like a maze destined to kill all who dared enter.

I pulled a small globe out of my cloak and whispered a word, "Shirak," and it began to glow with a pure lavender light.

Jasamine

As I was pulled down by the giant hissing beetles I heard once again the thunderous laughter that seemed it was was coming from the depths of the earth. It was becoming clearer to me that the voice was more feminine, although frighteningly deep and resonant. I vaguely heard Kelly saying something to the others about traps. I started to lose touch again, but then felt a hand grasping mine and pulling me up almost clearing my mind as I came.
It was Jack. Strangely enough I was glad to see him and hid behind him as he got rid of the rest of the insects. Loki had been rescued by Sorian and there was a vaporlike substance in the air leading me to believe that the other women had helped the process along with whatever powders and vials they seemed to had suddenly become experts with.
As I stood behind Jack I instinctively grabbed him from behind pulling close to his back, my arms around his chest....way to keep your distance, Jasamine. . I was one again attacked, this being the third time, and I needed some comfort.
"Are you ok?" he said, his back still towards me.
I stifled a cry.
"He turned and looked me in the eye. Again I saw the depth of those green eyes and was filled with emotion. I fel more grounded and whispered, "Ee'n. Tawhee..." , but then stopped as I saw the confused look on Jack's face. I realized now what the others had said about the language I had spoken with Gorleb. I was just trying to thank Jack, now I had the feeling I was losing my mind. I heard what I had said, and understood this time.
I looked up into his eyes and could no longer hold back the tears.
I buried my head in his shoulder and let go.
I was afraid.

Kelly sighed and looked up at the ceiling. Again their lack of team effort had almost gotten someone...two someones...killed. Sitting down on the ground she waited for the others to gather away from the giant insects before she spoke.

"Listen," She said looking at each of them,"I don't know what we are going to face but we can't face it if we don't start acting like a team. We can't be running off and leaving others. I know I was guilty myself and I know that everything happening, the traps, the creatures, the fact that we are different people with skills we don't know how we aquired are very distracting."

She paused a moment before she went on. "But I suggest that we all get used to the idea that, for whatever reason, we now have skills that may help us get out of this alive if we use them right. We each seem to have taken on the traits and personality of whatever costume we put on that night before the feast. Before this all started. Lets stop asking why and start asking how this can help."

"Every team has a leader who keeps the whole group together and I think that is one of the things we are lacking." Her eyes flicked over to Jack who was trying to comfort Jasmine. "I vote for Jack as that leader. He seems to have his head on straight and I get the feeling he can take us through this and get us out alive."

Her gaze then went to Dan. "We also need a strong arm to help us protect the ones who can cast magic. I have read alot of medieval books and the running theme seems to be that the magic users need uninterrupted time to get their spells done. Seems like you are our man there, Dan."

Shaking her head at Mic she added,"It's not a good idea for you to go in the back. We can be ambushed from behind and you won't have the defenses to deal with it unless you have time to cast whatever it is you have in those robes of yours. Dan needs to bring up the rear and I need you and your light source with me as I search for traps." She smiled a bit as she added,"I can't very well see in the dark."

Standing she turned to Jack and said,"So, what about it? My vote for leader is you. Anyone else have a vote on who should be team leader or do you agree with me?"

Jack

Jack was caught off-guard by Jasamine's sudden fit of emotion. She had seemed so stable a second ago, and now she was crying on his shoulder. She had whispered something in an odd language, but he couldn't tell what it was. He had no idea what to do. Part of his brain told him that this wasn't right and to push her away. The other part said to comfort her. For whatever reason, he decided to go with the latter.

He put an arm around her and let her cry into his vest. He slowly moved down so they were sitting on the cold ground. "It's alright." He whispered into her ear. She just cried harder. Wow. How long has it been since you comforted anybody? Seven years? And we know how that turned out, don't we? He tried to ignore the voice in the head.

He gently lifted her head off his shoulder and looked her in the eyes. Her eyes were dancing with fear. He knew what was wrong. She was afraid. He used one hand to wipe away the tears on her face. "It's alright." Jack repeated. "You're safe. We all are."

She sniffled in response. Jack didn't know what to do, so he held her close to him. She accepted the gesture and hugged him back. It felt good to comfort someone again.

He almost missed it when Kelly called his name. Jack looked up.

"Every team has a leader who keeps the whole group together and I think that is one of the things we are lacking. I vote for Jack as that leader. He seems to have his head on straight and I get the feeling he can take us through this and get us out alive." Kelly pointed to him. Jack gently let go of Jasamine and stood up. His eyes were like cold steel and face was grim. His cold demeanor had returned.

"Leader, huh?" Jack said. "If no one has any objections, I'll fill the position." Leader? Ha! You have no experience around people! You couldn't lead a pack of rats to a cheese wheel! Jack ignored the voice again and set his jaw. There was no objections.

"Alright, then." Jack said. "Let's come up with a plan of action." He pointed to the thief. "You're a thief, Kelly, so you should have the best chance to check for traps. I want you on full alert for that."

"Sorian, Mic. You two stay together and work as a team. Should we get in trouble, one cast offensive magic, the other should use defensive. Loki, Dan and I will be protecting you while you do that."

"Dan, you cover the back of the line and watch for ambushes. I will take the lead while we march. Kelly will be behind me, then Sorian, Jasamine, Mic, Loki, and Dan. Jasamine is, for whatever reason, the only one of us who has any understanding of this world at all. We need to protect her so she can help us get through this. I have a feeling that this 'old language' she knows will be integral to getting out of here."

"As for Gorleb, the slimy toad can..." Jack paused and looked around. "Hey! Where'd that little slime ball get off to?"

Dan shrugged, "Sure, Jack can lead. Or if he doesn't want to you can lead." He really didn't care. Dan knew his place, look very large and intimidating and kill as many enemies as he can untill the magic chuckers could get to thier business. He wasn't a leader and it didn't really matter who he followed. "I've followed some stupid people in my life before," he thought. This thought confused him and his faced screwed up to match his thoughs.

He looked around to judge the other people's responses, but most faces revealed nothing.

As Jack was giving out orders, Kelly's eyes fell on Dan. There was conflicting emotions going on behind his face and, for some reason, she could read the war that was happening within him.

She sighed. They were all going though alot. Alot had happened in such a short time and none of them had been able to get used to any of it. Stepping around everyone she went up to him and looked up to see if she could read his eyes.

"Dan," She said and then paused lost for words. She didn't really know him and she had no idea what to say. Finally she said,"We really need you. None of us knows why this is happening but I have a feeling that we really need your strength right now."

She looked over at the others huddled about Jack. "We are all scared and I know you are too. But you are in a position to help us survive more than almost anyone."

She tried to smile though it probably looked a little thin. "I'm not very good at this, you know. All business and schedules and...well, I just thought I would say that I have confidence in you and I know you will come through for us."

Loki felt the bugs surrounding him and was about to black out when he felt the bugs clearing off him. He looked up and saw Sorian standing over him. "Thanks," Loki said to him as he took Sorian's hand. The two of them followed Jack and Jasamine through the tunnel to where the other were.

As everyone made there preperations and recieved their assignments, Loki had a feeling in the back of his head that something was wrong. He was trying to figure out what it was when he heard Jack ask where Gorleb had gone to. That is when he realised that was the thought that had been bothering him. Loki got a sinking feeling in his stomach, knowing deep down that Gorleb had disappeared for a reason.

Jasamine

I felt safe with the decision to travel in the center of the group until I saw the look on Loki's face. Gorleb was gone.
We were moving forward with Jack in the lead and Kelly watching for traps, Dan the guard bringing up the rear. I had Sorian and Micki on eiter side of me and liked it that way.
I heard a high metallic screeching ahead of us, but we kept moving cautiously. Don't tell me they didn't hear THAT I thought. Then the voice again.
This time I understood, and it made more sense than ever, what Kelly said about us working as one.
I shivvered as I heard, " Gorleb! Kalba... "
She had drawn him back to her for something... she was hissing curses at him.
"Ha'wlee lkhodh baytan khadh khadh!"
She was telling him to bring her our souls, only one at a time!

"She has called him back" I said in not more than a whisper. "Hasha wale' lan dnezal"
Kelly's head snapped around as if I had yelled. Her eyes caught mine and she seemed to instinctively knew that I said we had to go now. This language was beginning to be more and more natural to me. Taking a deep breath I gathered my strength knowing the next challenge was coming for us.

Then the floor started rolling in low waves and we all tightened up our group.

Jack

Jack pulled out his sword and held it tightly. He didn’t understand what Jasamine had said to Kelly, but he understood the look the girl’s gave each other; it meant trouble. He moved to the front of the group and told everyone to get in formation. “Alright! Let’s move out!” Jack said. The group marched down into the darkening caves.

The corridor was long, narrow and dark, forcing Jack to use his torch to lead the way. He kept walking until Kelly stopped him short. “Jack!” She hissed.

“What?”

“See those elevated stones in the wall floor?” Kelly pointed ahead. “Those will trigger traps of some sort. Watch were you step.” Jack nodded and carefully led the group around the potential traps.

At the end of the trapped hallway, there was a fork in the road; a cave to the left and a cave to the right. Jack stopped and pondered the situation.

"Now what?" He heard Dan ask.

"Which way...?" Jack mused. He walked up and used the torch to illuminate the wall. There was writing there. Writing he had never seen before.

"Jasamine!" Jack yelled. "Can you read this?" Jasamine walked up and checked the writing. After a few seconds of trying to decypher it, she let out a yell.

"My feet!" She looked down to see a pair of rotting hands rising from the dirt and gripping on to her ankles. Jack attempted to move to her, but found he couldn't move either. A similar pair of hands were holding his ankles as well.

"What the fuck?" Jack yelled. He noticed many other hands were reaching through the dirt and grabbing on each person. The ones that weren't holding on pulled the rest of their bodies out of the ground. They creatures looked human, but their skin was dripping of their bodies and flech was hanging lossley from their bones.

Zombies.

Jack slashed at the hands that were grabbing him, but more hands tugged at his legs until he fell over. The hands continued to grab and hold him down as if trying to pull him through the floor.

sorian

ooc:sry bout that my e-mails been messed up.

ic:feeling the zombies start to grasp us i dig in my robes for a spell.looking at it" to banish thos who live while dead chant thes words in quick repetition" then as i read it said "marientos crotorious martriun crefarien"so deciding to go ahead an try it i started chanting and the one grabbin me let go.but the others wer not so willing. My staff in my hand started to glow so i started touching the hands.each one letting go and dissapearing. Then in front of us they all climbed out of the ground.Stopping my chant i said"great no what."

Kelly gasped as she was grabbed from the floor the only saving grace was her new instincts. Another vial from her cloak (how many were there she wondered) and she threw it breaking it over the rising mummy that had held her.

Acid rained on the undead creature and Kelly jumped grabbing hold of handholds in the wall that only her keen thief's eyes could see.

Calling down to Mic she said,"Healing magic! Healing magic works the opossite on the undead! You have to do a healing spell on the group!"

Being at the back of the group, there were few of the foul smelling zombies that rose to attack him. He grabed the pommel of his sword and immediatly felt an inexplicable thrill, the excitement of a battle surge through him.

A zombie was rising out of the dirt directly infornt of Dan. His hob-nailed boot crashed into its face and the creature went limp. "Not so though,eh?" he tonted. "SWORDS OUT, LADS!" he called, "The buggers are all show."

In one swift and deadly motion Dan whipped his sword out and laid the throat of the nearest zombie. Green ickor dripped down the blade. Another zombie threw an arm up to block a slash, which fell to the ground uselessly. Dan thrust his sword into the zombie's gut.

The corpes were pileing up around him and Dan was given a moment to catch his breath. Things were turning to the companions favour, Sorian and Loki were holding thier own against the creatures and were moving to help Jack break free from the zombie's clutches.

Dan heard a scrape close behind and spun around fluidly, sword flashing in a quick one-two combination and two more un-dead fell at his feet.

The women were cut off from Loki and Sorian, and were gradually being pushed back. Kelly was doing her best to hold them off, but her daggers weren't as effective as a heavy sword. To her credit though there was a trail of bodies at her feet as well.

"I guess this is what she meant by confidence." he said to himself. He let out a yell and charged at the group meanaceing the women.

One zombie in the interviening distance turned to meet him, but Dan's momentum bowled the thing over and the soldier kept running. The zombie's nails found his arm though and left bloody scratches.

Dan reached the group and hacked furiously at the creatures. His face grim and bloody, he snarled as he hacked.

Loki didn't know what to expect when he saw the hands reach up and grab Jasamine by the ankles. He was reaching for his hammer when he felt a powerful grip on his feet. he looked don and saw the putrid flesh of a zombie holding him fast to the floor. Loki swung down and smashed the hands, causing them to release their grip.

Loki saw Sorian next to him, reaching into his cloak. Loki moved behind him, fending off any zombies that trie to attack them while Sorian started chanting his spell. As the zombies were being pushed back, we moved towards Jack to help him out. That's when I saw Dan hacking away at the zombies in front of him as he tried to go help Kelly. He saw Dan charge into the creatures, a battle cry in the air. Realizing that he might need help, Loki fought through the zombies as he moved towards Dan. Several of the undead had their heads crushed in from the powerful blows of his hammer. As Loki approached dan from behind, he wondered if this onslaught would ever end.

Seeing Dan charge the zombies, Kelly smiled. Feeling safer with a good sword at her back, she let go of the wall and propelled herself toward one of the undead landing on it's back where it could not reach her. Two knives appeared in her hand and she reached around to slice the head from the neck, jumping down when green goo spilled from it.

She ducked as another zombie swung for her and swung her legs underneath it, toppling it before she pounced and beheaded it as well. It was slow going but fortunately her new found agility and senses aided her well.

She didn't know how she was doing this and at the moment she didn't care. She could take it all in later...and get violently sick as well...she decided as the liquid from the zombie splashed on her boots.

Jasamine

I figured nobody else had noticed the floor, maybe I was hallucinating, so I tried to stay calm.
I was trying to decipher some writing on the wall with Jack, when I felt cold gripping me.
"My feet!" I screamed looking down to see slime covered hands, grasping so hard that the rotten flesh was peeling away.
Jack tried to come to my rescue (again) butthe zombies had him too. I watched helplessly as he was pulled down to the ground.
Then it really began. For the first time we all started working together as a group. Zombies rose up from the ground, Kelly used one of her vials and got rid of some, Dan was battling like a true warrior with sword and Loki used his hammer. The stench of rotting flesh was surrounding us as Sorian chanted some spell and everyone did all they could, watching each other's backs.
The zombies were still coming when Kelly suggested to Mic that she use a healing spell on the group because the magic would work in reverse on the undead.
I was wishing I had something to contribute, but stayed as close to the others and away from the creatures as I could.
I din't realize wht I was doing at first, it seemed so natural, but I had begun to do some sort of meditation and was feeling stronger by the minute. As I closed my eyes I felt light, not weightless, but light like a brilliance inside me that I could not contain. I felt the light radiate outward and in a low steady tone said,"Yahlan khaelthaneen minkon."
Yes, our batallion was stronger than hers. My eyes still closed I could see her face now, hidieously deformed, yet dangerously beautiful.
"You will never destroy me!"
I was hearing her in my ow language now, much to her dismay.
"Laaaaaaaaaaaa!!" she bellowed, this time I KNEW everone heard. I had no idea what was going on with the zombies, but I now knew who was resposible and had a vague idea what we were up against.
"Bartha nasha'" she tried to hide her words from me, using the ancient language.
Yes, I am the human daughter. But..?
Something was starting to fit, but I grew weary, losing the image and once again found myself awakening in Jack's arms.
And again the pouch on my chest was heavy.

sorian

having looked in my scrolls to find no healing spell at the moment i drew my sword."LOFTARIEN" i said bring both my sword and staff to my face so that the breath of the words would wash ove them.I felt heat start from my hands and watched as flames grew all the way to the top of the staff and tip of the blade.Swinging at the zombies that persisted in attacking us they fell to the ground and burned to ash as i sliced them into pieces. Then i heard it.A scream that seemed to originate from a demon or from something definatley not human and i lost my conentration extinguishing the flame. It seemed to pain me like a hammer to the back of my head i felt myself losing counciousness. Before losing it i saw what seemed to be a wizard. He opened his robe a slit a small hole in his robe.reaching in it he handed me a scroll. And as i took it i left all counciousness.

Jack

Jack slashed through the hordes of undead. He joined by Loki and the two of them warded the creatures away from Sorian and Jasamine. They moved forward and met with Dan and Kelly and the four of them kept the zombies at bay.

Out of the corner of his eyes, he saw Jasamine concentrating on something. Jack whirled his blade around and hacked at some more undead. Then he heards a loud screech.

"Laaaaaaaaaaaa!!"

Jack stopped short and alomst everyone else did as well. What the hell was that? He turned to see Jasamine crumple to the ground. And suddenly Mic and Sorian managed to pull out some spells. The undead hissed and cried out, starting to fade away.

"Thhhhhhhe girrrrrrrrl." One of them screeched before it crumbled to dust. The others dug back into the ground and it was again quiet.

Jack paused to breathe before walking over to Jasamine. She was out cold again. He held her up and turned to Kelly.

"Do you have any smelling salts?" Kelly checked her pockets. Jack gave a smirk to the group. "Good job, team."

Mic

"Take my hand," I softly murmur to Jasmine and I prayed that I could do as asked. The small purple orb lifted from my other hand so I could see what I was doing and I closed my eyes as the glow spread outward, providing in theory the revitalization called for. I could feel the life forces of those alive and sensed the dark life sucking masses and felt them straining to take what I had offered. I merely hoped it would weaken them enough so that the others could fight them off. I clung to Jasmine's hand and used her inner strength to augment my own.

All else is details as I can hear the sounds of fighting. Then Jasmine's hand falls from my own and I am pulled back to the present moment and the small purple ball drops into my hand emitting a dim glow.

"Let me" I murmur as I feel really bad about drawing on her energy. I felt connected to her, as if she were the little sister I never had. I took a deep breath and spread my palm above her heart. I heard her cough a little and smiled weakly and hoped that her head ached a lot less than mine did right now.

As I was regaining consciousness I realized that the source of my inner strength was not only light but a gift, a compassion from Mic. The whole time I was hearing the angry voice cursing me and our little "batallion", Mic had been connecting with me. Not just any connection, but our souls seemed to have touched and we drew strength from each other. As her hand pulled away and I once again felt Jacks arms around me, I began to understand that I actually DID have something to offer. I could communicate with the demoness and with Gorleb and keep the group informed. I could also see deep into people -good and bad-through their eyes, another strange connection.
There was more. I scarcely had time to dwell on it though. I saw the faces of the others looking at me as they did when I first spoke the ancient tongue.
Yes I felt different, stronger - taller. But they looked as if they had seen a ghost.
"What now?" I thought to myself.
There was a tear in Mic's eye and I could feel the moisture on my own cheek.
I stood up and took a breath.
"Thank you" I breathed. "Thank you so much."

"We had beter get moving if we're ever going to get out of here" Jack stated in a somewhat softer tone than I had heard him before.
This time when we moved it felt like one unit and the demoness' voice raged from the earth screaming in agony.

Jack

Jasamine had told him that the cave on the right was the correct path, according to the writing on the wall, so they took that path. It wasn't long before the path began to go downward and the temperature began to rise.

"Is it just me, or is it getting hot in here?" Kelly asked.

"I don't think it's just you." Jack said, pointing ahead. "Look." Ahead of them about ten feet was an opening to a large room. The room was a giant pit with a raging fire at the bottom. A flimsy, rotting wooden rope bridge connected the one side of the room to the other.

"We can't catch a break, can we?" Loki asked. Jack walked up and examined the ropes that held the bridge up.

"This bridge can only take enough stress to support three of us at any given time."

"How do you know that?" Mic asked.

"Maybe it comes with the suit." Jack shrugged. "Anyway, with seven people, this could be a problem. We don't want to leave one person alone, especially a magic user, in case of an attack. And anyone with armor may add extra weight. Hmmm...."

"Okay. Sorian, Jasamine and I will go first. Then Loki and Mic. Then Dan and Kelly." Jack walked up to the bridge. "C'mon, guys. Let's do this." He waited for Jasamine and Sorian to join him before venturing across the swaying, rickity bridge.
