Young Justice: Outsiders (OOC)

I would think the revelation of one's secret identity would be up to each person.

In the show, Robin explained that revealing his identity wouldn't effect only him, which I think is a valid explanation in some circumstances.

So that would be something we'd need to agree on OOC, about who knew what, and how they knew and, in some cases, if the owner of the secret identity knew their secret had been compromised and by whom.

Wow. That day turned out to be much longer than I thought. My friend had a dental emergncy, so I rolled with him to get his tooth pulled. I finally got back him a little while ago, and since I've only had a few hours sleep in the last 48 hours, I am going straight to bed. I'll be up pretty early in the morning to do laundry and stuff, so I'll read through all these posts then. I can barely concentrate enough to even write this right now, lol.

Sleep well. Since Nikoleta is a philosopher, I'd like to wax philosophical for a moment, about the interactions of characters and whose powers trump whose (or would that be whom). For example, Rick says something to Nikoleta and Veronika teases her sister in their shared language. Guy might argue that Rick would understand because of his ability with languages. I would counterargue that he couldn't because the verbal language is supplemented by mental communications that Rick isn't privy to, so that one word could have ten different meanings. And then there Is the secret identity. I remember an episode where Flash didn't want to reveal his secret identity, and Batman just went down the line and "outed" everyone. Well, he is the world's greatest detective! But, picking on Guy again, what if I say, Nikoleta has been friends with Rick so, even as the Red Beetle, she'd know it was Rick by his aura and Guy replies, yeah, but I don't want that to happen and I say Boobs and he changed his mind. But seriously, I will try not be stubborn on compromises and if a hardheaded bitch like me can do that, it should be easy for the rest of you!

Just because you get out your boobs doesn't mean I'm going to change my mind. I think we should try it, just so I can prove my point. First though, let me go put gas in the motorboat.

Uh, I'd say work it out in OOC. What happens in character should not be a surprise out of character. What the characters know and what the authors know are two different subsets. Quick, someone make a Venn Diagram.

The scarab does have language learning capabilities. Just saying.

Batman was a massive dick in that scene. In fairness to him he was really the only one with a secret ID really worth keeping. Wonder Woman and Green Lantern (Jon Stewart) don't really seem to give a shit about their secrets. Superman kinda sucks, and Flash as is illustrated later in "The Great Brain Robbery" which has Lex and Flash switch bodies nobody knows or cares who Barry Allen even is.

That's about where Star is on the grand scheme of things. Nobody knows or cares. One of you people who are less retarded than him should probably set him straight sooner than later for the sake of everything unholy.

By the way, I will change my mind if you show me boobs.

As long as it's not too massively out there I do like surprises when I read the next post.

I would be curious on the Scarab and language learning and for that matter Starfire. I'm not sure the precise mechanics there. Surely there must be a certain minimum number of people speaking a language before it qualifies as a language and not a code?

Okay, laundry is done. Reading through the posts now. Oh, and I thought I'd share this -- my best friend Mike and his wife had twins a few weeks back, and while I was over there this weekend, I helped out feeding the babies. Mike snapped these shots of me as I was holding his son, Sydney.

Still working out who I want to play and what their backstory is...but question came to me, was there a Culling in this version of the DCU? What about N.O.W.H.E.R.E., do they exist?

Okay, awesome origin, Guy. And awesome character details, Gypsy. I could so picture a temp villain, like you said. Like someone casts a spell on one of their Channelings to take control of it. Or maybe another scarab shows up and binds itself to a Channeling, locking them into that form permanently until the scarab is removed. If this played out, it would be torment for Rick if he is romantically involved with one of the sisters. Maybe he could somehow interface with their scarab and reprogram it to release them, and then he could either absorb it into his own body or perhaps it attaches itself to an animal or something and becomes Rick's pet/sidekick/mount. Another option is to have Miss Martian attack the new form psychically and draw out the girls' conscious minds to the forefront.

And Sean, I would assume the language absorption ability works by essentially transferring data from the brain's memory and language portions. In the case of the scarab, you could say it scans a person's voice, body language, and brainwaves to determine what the person is saying. The person, regardless of what language is being used, will most likely have a series of sounds and images in their mind of what they are saying and what the words refer to. Before you speak, your subconscious mind is already preparing the data to transfer from your brain to your mouth, and the scarab could likely also interpret that data wirelessly to help determine one's words.

I have no idea who Culling is and only vague memories of NOWHERE, so I'll need to research them before I can answer that, lol.

Okay, I'd say the Culling has not happened in this universe and that N.O.W.H.E.R.E. does not exist, or if it does, it has nothing to do with our characters or is of any significance, plot-wise.

I have posted the team database HERE. I will update the list to include the characters that have not been confirmed once everyone has decided on who they are playing. Please only post there once and include all your current characters in that single post. Ideally, there should be one post for each writer and nothing more. This keeps all the important information on a single page, and we can continually edit our posts to add or remove characters and update information.

Works for me on the Scarab. I was asking mostly out of genuine curiousity. So many things in comics basically work how they want to work at any given moment. Like Starfire's (at least in the cartoons) kiss and gain language skills is obviously limited. Half the jokes in the show center around how knowing the definition of a word (Say cool or da bomb) does not give you the first clue how to use it in a conversation and she is constantly making mistakes that someone would learned English from a dictionary instead of binging on the Simpsons would make.

I would look at Starfire's language ability as similar to Data from Star Trek -- neither use contractions. They say "I am" or "does not" instead of "I'm" or "doesn't," at least at first. In Star's case, it would seem it was the biological equivalent of transferring raw data over without any of the previous system's customization settings.

Now I would contend the two sisters share a virtual mind in a medium inaccessible by non-mystical methods and that their "twin" language is not a communication between their two brains per se, but a physical manifestation of the evolving inner dynamics of this virtual mind, and therefore inherently unknowable by non-mystical methods. Veronika, however, thinks Starfire might be able to learn the "twin" language with a French kiss. After a wild night of sex. Nikoleta regrets her older sister seems to be a perpetually horny bisexual virgin. With boobs.

(Joking, joking!)

Telepaths read minds. While your girls' situation is somewhat unique, if I was playing a psionic I'd argue that with a bit of experience it would be something they can deal with.

Or, if I was the DM I'd say Psimon would still be a threat.

However, I'm down for bisexual boob exploration...

I'm not familiar with every example in DC but if we're talking YJ specifically language is clearly coded into the brain. If you don't speak the language you can't read their minds, at least not the language part. This is explicitly shown when Miss Martian attempts to read Bane's mind and she states that he's reciting soccer scores in Spanish.

I'm honestly less than convinced that that mystical means would decode this kind of language. I mean it can because magic does what magic wants because it wants. And that's all there is to it. But that falls under why can superman attach chains to planets and pull entire solar systems around. And the answer is 'fuck you that's how'.

I'd prefer that answer to be that he can't do that because it's laughable.

True, language is a defense against mind reading, but little to no defense against an image being planted in your head.

I wrote a superhero dice system once upon a time. Psionics have to be included, it's a classic superhero trope, and defending against them has to be comsidered.

If you watch the two Goku vs. Superman videos, they go into specifics on how OP Superman is and how he defeated Goku twice. The second time he defeated Goku in his Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan form.

And Miss Martian was inexperienced when she read Bane's mind. Remember, in season two she ripped memories from the Kroloteans and became a psychic translator on Rann.

It's not a matter of degree of difficulty. It's a matter of the location of the "mind," i.e., mental processes, etc. From my perspective, telepathy and other psionics work because the inhabitants of DC are biological Turing machines. All their thoughts, dreams and so on exist between their ears. So anyone equipped with the right equipment can get more details from their fellow Turing machines than they're giving out. My argument is the sisters, for mystical reasons, have a dualistic mind, that is to say, that at least part of their thought processes exist outside their physical bodies. So it's not just a degree of difficulty that the hypothetical psionic faces. How does she attack a "mind" that isn't part of the Turing machine?

Anyway, after considering that the mind/body problem may not actually be a problem in the DCverse (when you folks talk, I found myself woefully ignorant), I think it best I withdraw from this writing venture. Best of luck, though!

Wait, what? You're quitting over a theoretical argument about a minor point that may never come up in the actual Roleplay? I don't think anyone actually intends to learn your twin language; I was just arguing hypotheticals. And because you'd encouraged me to argue earlier. And that whole compromise thing we were talking about earlier.

If you want to leave, by all means go. I'm just here to have a good time, I assume everyone else is too, and if you're not having a good time, well I hope you find somewhere that you are.

I had a shitty day. I was looking forward to writing with you. C'est la vie.

Aww, don't leave, Gypsy! I'm sure we can work out a way to keep their joint minds out of the hands of psionic allies and baddies. Like maybe their joint mind exists on a higher plane of reality that even psychics can't perceive. Perhaps they are are in some sort of limbo between realms, but that would work better if they were twins and conceived at the same time. Another idea is to say that Nikoleta is actually some higher power born in human form and from a young age she bonded with her sister, unintentially binding their souls as well. They could even be Children of Trigon and if we ever get a Raven, they could be soul sisters or something. Just some ideas.

Regardless of how you wanted to do the sisters if you choose to proceed, we could say they are in some sort of limbo between the astral plane and the material plane, and most of their higher cognitive functions are controlled by a nexus of spirital energy. While their physical bodies are separate, their souls are part of a single entity within this nexus, and so any psychic who attempts to read them will not find much beyond basic human instincts coded into their genetic structure. What do you think?

We haven't even started and already someone has thrown their dummy out of the pram? Well that seems fantastic...

That said, last time this happened the entire thing collapsed in on itself and I'm not going to let that happen so easily this time.

I'm sorry you feel the need to go Gypsy, but to me it reads like you are upset because people don't like the idea of your sisters being immune to psychic interference.

I am understandably biased here, as I will be playing Miss Martian shortly, but I don't really like that idea either. It wouldn't have been a big deal for me, I would have dealt with it, but it does interfere with the chance of the team communicating through telepathy as they do in the cartoons.

On the other hand I could see it being fun if they get captured/split up and have to find each other again, and the only ones they can't find are the twins because MM cannot find their minds.

If you must quit then quit. It's up to you. But I don't think you should
