The late 90s saw a veritable ocean of boy bands pop up. In Sweden, two of them were ahead of all others; Backstreet Boys and Five. If you were lame you listened to BSB, but, if you were cool like I was then you listened to Five.
That's because Five were the bad boys.
They wore dark clothes and rapped.

Going with a more traditional definition of boy band this morning.

Way back in the late 90's my high school entered a contest, that whichever high school collected the most of something - I think it was cans of food for local food banks or something like that - that school would win a free concert from Take That. Our school won, but the band broke up before we could get the concert. Oh well. I barely knew who they were, so I wasn't super devastated. But for a sleepy small town where nothing happens, it would've been cool.
