Day 7: A song featuring one or more string instruments

Their third album, Forever Changes, is considered by many to be one of the best albums ever made. But Love didn’t have any great hits, they only had great songs. When I first heard this album, I actually didn’t like it much. But it grew on me a lot over the years…

This whole album has orchestral arrangements and string arrangements. When I was 14 or 15 my sister’s boyfriend turned me onto a lot of good music, including Love.

I actually liked their earlier stuff, which was a little bit more garage and more rock like.

Anyway, I think this is the best song on one of the best records ever made. A guy who likes move-forward 4/4 rock and punk, the arrangements starting at 2:00 and continuing thru the song are unbefuckinglievable.

There are people wearing frowns who'll screw you up
But they would rather screw you down
At my request I ask for nothing
You get nothing in return
If you're nice she'll bring me water
If you're not then I will burn

Live version here. Just as amazing. Forever Changes

Day 7: A Song Featuring One or More String Instruments

An old Édith Piaf song that Céline Dion sang at the Paris Olympics. I couldn’t find a video from the Olympics with the lyrics (only had time for a quick search), so this is her singing the same song in 2016 in support of France after the 2015 terrorist attacks in Paris. This has the English lyrics superimposed, for those who need them.

Nightswimming - r.e.m.
I usually go with the first thing that pops in my head, then i went around in loops before returning to this... strings arranged by the wonderful John Paul Jones. This is my "end of summer" head filler, "September's coming soon". Saw them play this on a lovely summer evening in the open air in Rome, ending with Stipe sitting on the piano as Mills finished the song.

Day 7: A Song Featuring One or More String Instruments

Wintergatan. The Winter Street, Swedish for Milky Way.

First time I saw this video I was dumbstruck. I can't even fathom the amount of engineering, fine tuning, trial-and-error that goes into creating a completely new instrument, an automaton, from scratch.

I guess it's technically a string instrument?
The machine has cannibalized a bass guitar.

Wintergatan - Marble Machine

Good lord. That is fucking amazing. Thank you for sharing that.

I love machines.

What is remarkable to me isn't The Machine -- lots of people make clockwork novelty instruments and make videos. What's remarkable to me is that the song is absolutely lovely.

If you check the how-it-works video, you can hear the difference between the room-mics and the line-audio from the instruments and how completely different they are, BUT that he managed to consciously incorporate some of the room-sounds into the song and made them feel like perfect pieces of the puzzle. Like the grinding gears, the spinning fly-wheel, the ratcheting of the conveyor belts...

Musically it's so damn pleasing 💕

I mean... most bands feature a guitar or something like that somewhere.
This band brings a cello.
"Dirty Imbecile" - The Happy Fits
Day 7: A song featuring one or more string instruments

Guitar, drums, cello. And they rock it.

"Mary," The Happy Fits

I have not heard this band before. Thank you for making the introduction.

I like!
