I've misheard some of these lyrics for so long now...I can follow a line... then lose the lyrics just as quickly. At this point, I don't even want to know what they're singing.... Love the song, though... and love the lyric confusion.

When this song came out neither me nor my friends know who Smokey Robinson was. So when they heard me singing “when Smokey sins” it became a bit of a running joke for them that Smokey the Bear was running around lighting fires.

I don't care what Bruce Springsteen has to say on the matter (he actually wrote the song), the lead singer is clearly singing "wrapped up like a douche" not "wrapped up like a deuce"

I can't remember if I have already mentioned this song but... I love Lionel Richie. Grew up listening to him and would sing this song with these lyrics as a 3-4 year old.

I still sing it this way.
