Day 3: A song in a foreign language

A lot of people know Carlos Santana’s version, but it was originally written by Tito Puente in 1962, who is a joy to watch in this video.

Such a great song and so good to see it live with dancing, Tito Puente playing drums and singing along.

Tito Puente - Oye Como Va

EDITED to add link to original 1962 version

I don’t listen to a lot of stuff that’s not in English. Lyrics are important to me and I’m utterly mortified by the possibility of some friend telling me I’m grooving to “all x are the most inferior race” or some shit. But anyway, every time I listen to this song I think “sure this song is pretentious but can you kick it up just a notch Andrew?” And BAM he does it. It’s beautiful.

None. None more goth.

Marian by The Sisters of Mercy

I am a "lyrics are sooooooo important" person as well. If I enjoy it and can't tell what it says, language or otherwise, I obsessively research it before I enjoy it too much. And it didn't happen to me, but back when I was DJing, a buddy got bit on the ass with some hateful, anti-LGBT reggae he used in a club, made worse because he was very much flaming in his demeanor . Passed it of as vicious parody, but he was heartbroken. He had me research anything he didn't know after that. (He said he was too pretty to do research...)

Alejandro Escovedo's critically album, The Crossing, with the vocals recorded in Spanish. With the lyrics translated into and sung in Spanish, the concept album which tells the story of two young immigrants to the US, who bond over a mutual love of punk rock as they struggle with the racism and discrimination as immigrants, becomes an even more intimate experience. It features guest vocalists, as well as Alejandro singing all of the songs from The Crossing in Spanish.

Love Alejandro!! This is a great album!

I’m sure I’ve done this song before but I don’t care because both it and the video for it fucking slap. When this theme comes around next time, I’ll play it again.

I LOVE this song!!

Magma is a band from France and their drummer created his own language called Kobaian and most of their songs are sung in that language. This one has some English interspersed through the song. I thought this would be a fascinating addition to today's theme.

This is a Gaelic song heard in trailers for the Disney Pixar movie Brave. I was struck by how beautiful her voice is and added it to my playlist. Not a fucking clue what she’s saying but it feels good.

"My Love Is Over (or Upon) The Ocean."

I still have my English/Gaelic dictionaries.

Old Scottish song, IIRC. It ends well, which isn't always a given.

Have I ever mentioned the dichotomy between your writing and some of your musical choices? Because there might be a slight one.

Oh, how I love you...

Beautiful language, though I understand it written far more than I will ever spoken (or sung). I used to sing Gaelic songs to my daughter as lullabies (as well as Irish drinking songs, which didn't go over as well when she was singing them on the playground the next day).
