Seela, I mentioned the study of foreign languages because that is one way that people become interested in other cultures and their literature. Americans tend to do most of their traveling domestically, and a very small percentage of adults here read books. I think that your comment on the thin supply of books in translation here make sense. Demand is low so sellers keep low inventory. And with fewer brick-and-mortar bookstores available, people will be less likely to stumble on a good book in translation into the future.
