That so many of the cliches about creaking muscles, lousy sleep, and serial forgetfulness were true. I was hoping that at least a couple of them were urban myths.

As an old retired guy, my "business casual " is cleaner jeans and a mostly unwrinkled flannel shirt. I only ever wear a suit or a jacket and tie for weddings and funerals. In the past four years, I have attended three of each.

I do still own shirts that merit wearing a tie. I used to always wear one of those with real OMG-they-have-a-crease slacks to go out to dinner. These days, no one cares what you're wearing when you pull up to the curbside pickup zone for your takeout.

What keeps you here?

Friends.

When I first discovered the forum side of Lit, I had been a newly minted freelance writer for maybe a year or so. Before that I had worked in schools or offices for 30 years. I was the guy who would always stop by someone's office to chat a bit on the way back from the communal coffee pot. When I went solo I missed that interaction and was delighted to find that I could connect with people online when I broke for coffee. I made friends here in 2003 and 2004 that are still a part of my life. Over the years I have made many good friends here and while many no longer come here, we are still in touch other ways. I've made newer friends, too, and I hope to find new friends still.

Friends keep me here. We josh and tease and joke around publicly, but I've also developed close and supportive (non-romantic) relationships here that are very dear to me. I can't imagine leaving permanently.

I want to try a bloody mary every time I open this thread. What is your favorite brunch?

Brunch is not a regular part of my life but I love breakfast. I'm an eggs and meat and potatoes breakfast guy when I go out. My go-to order is corned beef hash withceggs over easy and home fries (not hash browns, which are an abomination upon the earth).

That said, I somehow sired children who enjoy brunch and as a result I have had to submit to non-breakfast morning meals occasionally. My favorite brunch entree ever was a duck poutine. A bloody Mary is a good choice for that time of day but it had better be sturdy. Too many ate so badly watered down that I can hardly taste the tomato juice.

OMG! Corned beef hash and eggs with hash browns are my judgement meal for a new place. If they can't figure out how to properly cook any of the 3 then theres no reason for us to continue our association. And! They have to make decent coffee!

Sorry Yank, S. FL can't make decent home fries to save their - uh, anyway...I'm picky about my hashbrowns. They have to be properly shredded and cooked so there's some crunch to a mouthful without swimming in grease and not completely desiccated.

When you do find corned beef hash in Oklahoma . it came straight out of a can. Not fit to eat.

I discovered it at 15 when I worked in the hospital kitchen in a tiny town. The farmer's wives could really cook and one of them made a mean hash. That was the start of it all.

My mom made us taco salad with kidney beans and french dressing. :(

Yank, what food do you remember from your childhood?

What's the last book you didn't finish? How about a movie?

What's the last book you didn't finish? How about a movie?

These are tough because I rarely give up on books or movies. I think the last book that I set aside and didn't finish was War on Peace: The End of Diplomacy and the Decline of American Influence, by Ronan Farrow. It's an in-depth examination of how the Trump administration gutted our State Department and its role in American foreign policy within a year of taking office. I put it down because it was just too depressing.

I am having a hard time remembering a movie that I haven't finished. Most recently I turned off the recent Borat movie because it wasn't ringing my chimes like the first one did, but a few days later I did finish it largely to watch the Giuliani scene.

This is not because I only ever read good books or watch great movies, by the way. My taste in movies especially runs toward the odd and incorrigible now and then (Attack of the Killer Bee Girls, anyone?) and I have plenty of clunkers on my book shelves. I guess I over-learned my mother's lesson to always finish my dinner.

Is there someone whose suggestions on movies, books, food or something else you always heed?

Certainly not one person for all such choices, though in college and graduate school I had a close friend who was deeply well informed on books, movies, and food. I don’t think I ever regretted following his suggestions. Now I mostly heed my own counsel but I do pay attention to recommendations from folks who I know to be well-read or well-versed in movies. I have never gone wrong with any of your movie recommendations, by the way. Including that truly bizarre Scandinavian parody of Star Wars (I think), of all things. So there’s that. :rose:
