Anyone for a nightcap?

Important question.

I would like to start drinking some kind of hard liquor with fresh squeezed lime and nothing else. I don't like to drink sugary sweet stuff.

Now, the obvious choice, I guess, would be vodka but I really dislike vodka on principal. It's essentially tasteless. I get the argument for good vodka, I do, but I'm not enthused. So what else is there? Tequila I guess? I feel like rum and tequila are very specific. I'm looking for an all purpose cocktail.

Suggestions? Keep in mind I'm very particular. I'm no 2 buck chuck girl.

White rum would be my choice, as it is nearly always my choice for anything. But if that's not what you're looking for, how do you feel about gin?

You know, I should revisit gin. It's probably my best bet. I think I'll try Hendrick's again next time I'm out and see what I think. Thanks!

You're welcome!

I was never a huge gin fan until a friend of mine showed me how to make good gin cocktails a couple of years ago. Now, I don't mind it at all, although I rarely ever drink nowadays.

I hope you find something you like. :)

Ugh first of all, ewwwww gin. Nope, no way. Gin tastes like bug spray.
Used to be a burbon girl until the hangovers took me down.

A good vodka and still water with a lemon or lime (in a tall glass) Keeps me hydrated and is refreshing. I like Stoli or Ketel (both grain) your mileage may very.
I used to do ketel or stoli press... Until the diet

I mean butterscotch schnaps, Baileys, Amaretto, or Kahlua.

straight.

i've heard of a "cheesecake" cocktail, but I find I just don't like cocktails. Even then, I drank so rarely; just give me what I already know I like and call it good.

Also cocktails are more risky, for a variety of reasons.

No no no, actual cheesecake with a dessert wine or port.

Ooh, what kind of cocktails?

It's been a while since I had gin but I thought Hendricks was pretty decent.

I suppose the vodka adds the kick without a taste to compete with the lime, but there's just nothing to it in terms of flavor. I mean, good vodka is essentially just about purity.

straight.

ick.

What's wrong with scotch? Or are you mostly interested in boozy citrus flavors?

Can you drink it with lime? I just want something that pairs well with lime. I can't drink hard liquor straight.

I haven't seen people pair lime with scotch, but a lemon twist is not uncommon. Why can't you drink hard liquor straight? Is there some odd rule written into your DNA of which I do not know?

Scotch and soda or scotch and water are also reasonable ways to drink scotch. In fact, adding a half teaspoon of water to a glass of scotch (without ice, of course) will sweeten its flavor. Not sure why this is so, but it's a fascinating outcome.

candy is dandy but liquor is quicker?

Candy/ liquors are clearly not for everyone though, I used to get a lot of abuse for my tastes, I'd have been better off just telling people I didn't drink.

And now days; I really don't.

I don't like things that are too sweet as a rule, but I don't think you're alone in your tastes.

I don't like the taste of straight scotch or most good hard liquors. It's just too strong for me. But then I don't like mixers much either because they're too sweet. I guess I could try water with scotch and a bit of lemon. Can you do club soda with scotch or is that gross?

Scotch with club soda is what "scotch and soda" means. Add a twist of lemon, try it and report back.

Thoughts on limey drinks... have you tried/like mojitos? You could really lime thise up if you wanted to... or Captain Morgan's black is nice on the rocks with a bit of lime squeezed in.... and maybe not what you are looking for but. I have friends that prefer their rum n Cokes with a squeeze of lime as well.

As far as other surprisingly good citrus drinks... I went to a ladies brunch and they served whipped vodka (as in whipped cream flavored) in bottled ruby red grapefruit juice and it was guzzled down much more quickly than the mimosas that were also served made from very nice champagne and fresh squeezed organic orange juice. It was also the reason the brunch for many of the women ran late into the afternoon. Hehe. It really was good and I am not much for mixed drinks in general.

A very good (or not necessarily so!) vodka with a very good (definitely so) water, with lots of fresh lime is one of my faves.
Refreshing!
:)

Right. Duh. I tried it and it's perfect! Total winner.

I don't want all the sugar of a mojito, though they are good. Whipped cream flavored vodka also sounds way too sweet.

Vodka is just sort of blah to me. I mean I'll drink it in a pinch but I don't want to make vodka drinks at home. Vodka is the kind of girl you don't bring home for mama I guess.

And, it's the perfect "power drink" for those who need such things. A lesson I learned many years ago from my wife's aunt who used to attend upper-echelon cocktail parties given by and for Pentagon folk was that you can nurse a glass of scotch for hours. This allows you to constantly have a glass at hand without all the muss and fuss (and risk) of refilling your glass frequently during the night. Now, these days, the true power drink is a single-malt scotch (think Glenfiddich, Macallan, etc.) served neat. But a scotch and water or soda is an A- level substitute.

I squeezed like a half a lemon in, so it's kind of a bastardized version of a scotch and soda. Don't tell!

Not a problem, as long as we don't meet for cocktails and accidentally switch drinks. Lemon juice in my scotch would be like Dr. Jekyl's potion and I would become most unpleasant company.

Makers 46

Ya, it's smoother... But I like what I like and I prefer Makers Mark. I guess I can be a bit stubborn about what I like.

Oh, ITW... FWIW, the ruby red grapefruit holds its own against the vodka confection and I would not call it sweet. I had to be convinced to try it actually because I don't like sweet drinks at all these days and I did like it for its light kinda citrusy vibe. Good luck finding your key lime drink. :rose:

Cheers to all! :)
