^^^^ This is a great old image, possibly from earlier versions of the story. In the original version, Red actually gets eaten by the wolf. The story was an allegorical morality lesson that all young girls would have recognized: you play with the wolf and you get bit! Of course now we need happily ever after stories :rolleyes: hence the new ending.
 
I'm a big fan of Doré's engravings in general, but I the expressions in this one are something else. Zoom in close and look at her eyes, you can see it.

As for the multiple incarnations/ending to the story... In the oldest version, the wolf eats her and falls asleep in her Grandma's bed. So, I suppose the moral would be that it's best not to go get into bed with wolves, unless you want to get eaten.

Especially ones impersonating little old ladies :D
