Crafty Litsters show your work!

Yeah, I've done cross stitch patterns, but drawing out a costume... it's a mess.

Doesn't help. I can't get things to look on paper the way I have them in my head, but I can get it right to fabric. Suppose I could give it a try again.

Graph paper, honest to Bob! But that's just me, unless I can alter a ready-made pattern. I have two close sewing friends. One is a draping expert. She can take a few yards of muslin and a mouthful of pins, and make real clothes that fit! Right with you standing there!!! Everything is basted together because there are sometimes ease issues, but more often than not she just blows me away.
The other is a firm believer in measuring all the important dimensions to the 1/8" (.5 mm?) and practicing voodoo geometry. And damned if it doesn't fit!

Mind you, these are historic costumes, from back in the day when almost everything was created from rectangles and triangles (more or less) but still!

Meanwhile, my weaver's heart is doing a major tapdance over this new-to-me article. I suddenly miss my loom, dammit!

Nothing soft about this one.

I've always wanted a "ball and chain", but they are not exactly store bought items.

The ball is from a crane hook, the chain is a steering chain from a fishing boat and the leg iron I made myself.

I think technically this qualifies: one of my hobbies is exploring a family of geometric patterns that have specific mathematical properties and interesting* symmetries.

http://twistybramble.tumblr.com/post/104404164107/gratuitous-mathematical-post

The "craft" part is that even with the aid of a computer, it takes some sneaky tricks to find the larger patterns.

*to me, anyway

Stunningly delicious!!
And gave me thoughts on some of my personal theories regarding language development "windows", spreading populations and... some other bits and bobs that kick around in my head. Very sweet stuff :)

Funny you should mention language development - that's something I've been trying to figure out for this setting, because all the children grow up in one moiety and then move (physically and culturally) to a different one when they come of age. I had it in my head that mostly they'd have a common language with some dialect differences, but a couple might have an auxiliary sign language - which would be difficult to learn as an adult. So maybe they have to start learning earlier, unless my fictional peeps have a much longer language window. Or I could just invoke It's Magic, but that feels lazy.

it was your graphical representation of M 6,3 F 3,3,3 that made me think, due to the sort of extraneous little bubble that formed. If it's ok with you, can we move this to PM? And tomorrow, as its very late for me right now  I know our time zones are upside down...

Sure! Definitely getting a bit off-topic for this thread. Feel free to PM.

I made this 'Twas The Night Before Christmas screen many years ago. It's over 6 feet high and 8 feet wide. it took me 3 months to make it.

Totes adorbs!! :) Every little panel! Every little detail... It made me giggle. Love the kitties! And the reindeer. Ok, and the teddy bear and... ok! All of it!!
Just one question.
What goes on behind the screen that it need to be 6 feet tall and 8 feet wide? :D

Thanks!

I ink them by hand (with nibs!) on big pages, scan them and color them in photoshop. I'm one of those people who firmly believes that inking things by hand gives comic art a very unique, and organic feel that you can't achieve otherwise. Unfortunately, I'm a minority. xD

Actually if your a firm believer of hand inking, you wouldn't be using photoshop youd spend the hours colouring it in by hand with ink. kind of like DC/Marvel of the 60s 70s. . and Cosplay Awesome. know a few die hard cos players. a lot of TKS and 501st members

Thank you so much. I'd had the idea for the screen and my mom found a 'Twas The Night Before Christmas coloring book for children, and I cut out the page parts and traced them on the wood and then painted them in. I added the cats in to represent our own. I know I'm no Trisha Romance, or Thomas Kincade, but I like to think my folk art style is simple but attractive.

We put it in the corner of the kitchen to place across the area where the garbage container was and we could put junk behind it we didn't want guests to see. It's quite heavy and unwieldy to move around, it's held together with hinges and was quite a project. I painted the panels sitting on a chair with the individual boards on an ironing board lowered, wasn't easy...

I've also made a couple of pet caskets out of pine, stained and varnished and with brass hardware. Fully lined with plush material like you'd find in a pet bed and padded, and with a little pillow. Very sad labors, but made with love for the ones they were made for.

The black one is leather cord. Its Just knots and more knors... the gold are "jump rings?" I think? And instead of one I used two.
Oh. And thanks. :)

Thanks for the explanation. I could see either of these being used as a "day collar" should someone need such a thing.

A sterling silver chain.

(The paper is 5mm square)

I cast a rod, roll it thinner, then draw it down in a draw-plate.

Rings are made by rolling the wire around a dowel, sawing them up.

Then they are silver soldered together.

The clasp is made from thicker wire.

Clasp? I guess that is not really the right word, is it?
.

Sure it is! It's a toggle clasp when I hunt them for purchasing.

Beautiful work!

My workbench has fallen into total barking chaos and I can't work on it. I can't even find my favorite carving tool.

Cleanup tomorrow. I swear it.

Compared to my bench (the one inside, not the one in the workshop. I dug the workshop table free yesterday), that one is pretty tidy.
:D

Those dildi look interesting?

Are they candles or functional?
I'd love to hear more about them.
