Crafty Litsters show your work!

I was fooling around in the Castle Cumference workshop yesterday.

A finger ring with attachment point.
I'm afraid that it will give a few raised eyebrows, should I ask Lady C to wear it in public.
:D

Made from equal amounts of Sterling silver and naughty grins.

I would totally wear that in public!

Thanks for all the nice words.

The naughty grins are the hard parts. Sloshing around with molten metal close to a thousand degrees C, tends to make you far too serious.

Probably because of all you here I have fallen down the etsy browsing hole recently. I explored the links Desertslave gave too, having like some of us mentioned, grown frustrated with etsy, but have to say, I have fallen in love all over again in recent weeks.

All the things I didn't know about and now I NEED. Felted elf shoes? NEED. Crow wings, like angel or fairy wings, but black, NEED. Or the moth wings made by someone in Spain. A particular woollen cloak made in the Ukraine? Yep, need it. Steam punk bustle, of course, what self respecting rural middle aged woman doesn't need a bustle in yellow taffeta ( to wear with elf shoes wings and cloak of course). Tutus, so many net skirts, in sorbet colours. I have a desire for the kind of things that live in children's dressing up boxes.

I am not pretty or slim enough to carry these things off. But I have been going through my trunks and digging out fabric. I have some beautiful orange silk I have been hanging on to for 'when...' The future comes. Well, its not coming anytime soon, so I am going to try sewing something simple like a wrap skirt out of it. See if I can get my rusty old fingers working. There is not much of it or I'd do something more fun.

Is there enough for a matching turban? I think you need a matching turban... :p

My entire takeaway from that was "orange silk." <swooooooon> :D

I really need to pause a moment before hitting submit. (Some sort of reflex there?)

I recently decided to take a hiatus of unknown length from SCA events. There has been too much negative politicking of late and I just don't have the spirit to deal with it. I'm not directly involved, but I've friends on both sides of the drama who matter to me. :( I'm still doing some SCA activities with my friends, like painting scrolls and sewing, but more for the social and artsy part than anything else.

So (sew), now I have a conundrum. I have a significant stash of 'historical' fabric that might not be used in my lifetime, and I'm not sure what to do with it, other than offer it to friends. The bulk of my stash, though, is plain-dyed linens and light wools in a variety of colors. I think I'll be making some patchwork-ish skirts or some such. Apple green and deep purple? I also have brown and red and cobalt blue. Hmmmm, mundane motley? I have an urge to embroider, too.

My ultimate conundrum, of course, is what happens if I quit my hiatus? What shall I wear? ROFL

I'll get a picture of it for you. It has circles on it. At one point I was going to make a saddle cloth from it......

I love orange silk, though otherwise I am not a particularly orange person. I have some orange suede shoes I think....But orange and pink together, orange and the right shade of green, or orange and purple make my toes curl with delight, in silk. Mainly its a colour that is not really seen in uk much, so it is very more punchy here, than say, in Italy, where it is more 'normal' a colour. Slubby oranges maybe, in this time of year, but the really glorious spun of molten sun and fire and hot metal type ones? Less so.

I have some clothes that I use almost exclusively for our mediterranean times. Somehow they just don't work as well here, even when it's really hot and sunny and I'm as tanned as I am when I normally use them.
I think it's something about the light but also something cultural.

Can you use any of it for modern clothes for you? Modern clothes in beautiful fabric that combine your love of creativity and fabric and create something into more daily wearing clothes? Plain dyed linens would make beautiful easy to slip on dresses, no? Not even needing to be so dramatically different. I have a beautiful modern fantasy dress made by historical costume person in my etsy folder, which would be lovely simple but smart event wear...I will try and pm details to you, though you might think I am mad, it looks a little science fiction!

Edit: can I link it here? https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/184...ga_search_query=the wanderer&ref=sr_gallery_2

And this is orange silk, but terrible snap under ceiling light . Trying to show the colours in lights, so its draped over a dog.

I'm in love with that dress!

For those who like the 'romantic/fantasy' dress styles, I have to recommend two of my favorite companies. I've bought multiple items from both of them and always been satisfied.

HolyClothing.com is the first. They are all garment-dyed items, but well made and easy to add more color if you want.

lotustradersclothing.com is the other. Some styles are single color but many feature lovely batik fabrics.

If I had more of a clothing allowance, my closet would be full of their clothes in ALL the colors! :D

Ok, so I feel less weird. All my real life friends have patted me on the head and smiled and changed the subject. :)

Yes, the cultural thing iris, its a big thing. For me now, being exclusively in uk, I don't think its such a big problem. When i was travelling more with our old lifestyle it was something I was probably more.....impacted by. I do not feel the need to fit in, but also to not stand out for WRONG reasons. I have tendency to look like bag lady easily :). In this beautiful dress I would probably look like modern interpretation of how leprosy used to be viewed .

Yes, I can totally relate to that.
It's not so much about what others would think. It somehow looks wrong to me too.
I feel a bit of the same thing to a lesser extent when I travel for work.
Something that would look "severe" enough for a "severe" meeting in one place, can look like something you'd wear any day in another place.

Yes, I totally get this. I get it wrong often.

In uk evening wear can be hard. For example, at "balls" one does not necessary wear ball gown or long evening dress, but sometimes cocktail wear, or even what I consider sort of day wear. This is not just geography culture, but changing times I think. I think its good everyone can be comfortable, but it also find the passing of dressing for events a little sad. We have two local Balls we are invited to without fail every year, and the local country side balls this is a real confusion of wear, but we don't go. ( not our scene really, do not know enough people locally to make it feel like it either). If what to wear is an issue I found in the past the best thing to do is not to buy tickets for two or a few, but to group up and buy a whole table, and agree a dress code of the table appropriate.....so all wear cocktail/evening/ whatever at a function......either getting the rules 'right' or appropriate for your comfort or whatever.....then at least anyone shy at your group feels they fit in with you!

G has no white tie that fits, but has not needed it since university. We were asked once for white tie, and he mentioned to host he did not have it and was off to hire it...and host said, that no one had bloody white tie, just wear black tie, all his friends were ....'' Fine for G, but it left me in a little confusion....( again that party was a mix of cocktail and evening dresses It turned out, but no smarter day dresses!)

Ha, the formal dress codes have been totally muddled up here too.
People send formal invitations without dress code and are unaware that this traditionally means white tie or they make up their own strange codes, like "happy summer evening dress".
The latter made me want to show up in a tank top, cutoff jeans and flipflops.
