For Those Who Might Be Wondering Why We Might Be In Ukraine

Ukraine is currently working on acquiring long-range missiles for its F-16s, according to Deputy Yehor Chernev. These missiles are likely the 370 km JASSM, the 900 km JASSM-ER, and the JASSM-XR or AGM-158B-2 with a range of up to 1900 km.

This is the big question. Will F-16s tip the scales or no? Stay tuned to find out...

Russian Telegram postings that there is a Ukrainian attack across the border in Kursk Oblast that has penetrated a considerable distance into Russia.

Ukrainian forces have reportedly crossed into Russia’s Kursk region, launching attacks on the towns of Gogolevka (Гоголевка) and Nikolaevo-Dar’ino (Николаево-Дарьино). Multiple Russian sources have confirmed the incursion, suggesting that Ukraine may be attempting to seize Russian territory for media impact. Newly released footage reveals Ukrainian soldiers engaging in combat just 1-2 miles inside Russian territory. The map below illustrates the areas that Russian sources acknowledge are currently under Ukrainian control. The actual territory in which they are operating must be larger given the video below. In response, the Russian military has deployed the 22nd Separate Mechanized Brigade to mount a counterattack. This incursion is likely a strategic maneuver by Ukraine, intended to compel Russia to divert resources to bolster its border defenses, potentially weakening its front-line forces. Additionally, the operation may serve as a propaganda effort to boost Ukraine’s position in the information war. Russian sources are now reporting that Ukrainian troops are now attacking in the direction of Kurilovka as they continue their assault on Kursk region in Russia. This town is about 4 miles inside Russia.

Other reports show a Russian observation tower some 10 miles inside Russia that was attacked and destroyed. In the Sudzhansky district of Kursk Oblast, Russian aviation, including Su-25 jets, are actively involved. According to Russian media, fighting continues involving artillery, drones, and various firepower.

I suspect this will turn out to be the Freedom of Russia Legion, the Siberian Battalion and the Russian Volunteer Corp.

This is what we know so far..
- Brigade(?) + sized incursion into Kursk oblast.
- So far the penetration s 7km deep... (The russian attack into Kharkiv maxed out at 6.5kms).
- Tthe Ukrainian forces are still advancing..
- Russia is rushing the 22nd brigade(?) to the front along with air cover..
- Ukraine is wrecking everything in front of them with drones. One downed Kamov Ka-52 chopper, two struck T-62M MBTs on flatbed trailers, several destroyed trucks. There are reports about more helicopters being shot down. A mi-28 by an FPV, for example.
- Russian TG and social media proves Russian forces were not ready for this.

Russian sources are saying they are moving untrained conscripts to block the Ukrainian forces while locals are sheltering in their basements. In border villages, munications have been cut off, people are fleeing settlements in panic. Russian military have apparently been surrendering, with 35 POW's being walked back into Ukraine. Probably the remains of a company. Likely 50-70 dead.

The incursion into the Russian Kursk region achieved some noticeable gains with limited efforts on the first day. It will certainly force Russians to redeploy some resources to this sector.

Russian report about Kursk region:As of 22:00 on August 6, 2024, the situation on the Kursk front is dire. The enemy has penetrated into the Sverdlikovo area and is expected to launch a stronger attack tomorrow morning. The most dangerous situation is north of Sudzha, where Ukrainian forces are amassing and likely to attempt to enter the city. Intense fighting, artillery shelling, and drone attacks are anticipated. Residents in the area are urged to evacuate if possible, as the conflict will not end quickly.

August 6, 2024. A Ukrainian commander on the frontline updated that their forces have taken the city of Sudhza in Kursk Oblast saying the move would “force” Russia to “reinforce their own border instead of continuing to advance in Ukraine. We know we can’t go toe-to-toe with them in the East using the tactics they use because they don’t care about their guys and for us our soldiers are our best resource so for us this is the best way to draw their forces from the East and reinforce our border.”

He continued: “We haven’t done this before because clearly Ukraine isn’t interested in going into Russia. This isn’t a case where we want to take Russian territory at all. We don’t want to lose one guy taking Russia, we don’t want Russia. But with the situation as it is in the East this makes perfect operational sense. What else are we supposed to do? Just sit here and watch while we get pushed back and back … and lose more of Ukraine. Its not a good solution, we had to do something else.”

Russia’s defence ministry said Ukraine had launched an attack into the Kursk region. “The enemy today launched another attempt to break into the territory of Russia’s Kursk region,” a statement said. “Artillery fire, army aviation strikes and drone strikes are being inflicted on the enemy.” It added that Moscow’s forces had responded and the region’s acting governor described the situation on the border as “controllable”. Russian reports earlier noted the incursion and said it had moved in reserves to help repel hundreds of fighters backed by tanks. There are already reports suggesting that a significant number of Russian troops — including conscripts — were captured so far in the course of the raid and have been escorted across the border into Ukraine.

Ukraine forces have achieved more than 10 km of penetration in one day. Maybe more. What the kremlin troops took 1 month to do in Kharkiv, the Ukrainians did in 1 day. It is not a reconnaissance operation, but it is not the main one either. The russians do not know where the main blow will be. There are no Russian reserve forces and the Russian troops that have appeared so far were conscript units which were easily defeated. The russians themselves say that the Ukrainians could take Kursk in 1 or 2 days. Nothing prevents them, and any movement of Russian forces from another area of the front is subject to being destroyed by Ukrainian ATACMS, drones and long range artillery.

More than 2,000 km north of Ukraine, an oil refinery ablaze

Usinsk is located in the northern part of the Komi Republic, an oil-rich region that stretches north of the Arctic Circle. The refinery that is owned and operated by Lukoil caught fire on the 6th of August. Flames soon embraced one of the plant’s sections. According to several sources, the fire started after an explosion. Eye witnesses told newspaper Komi Novosti that the flames covered “major parts of the production facility.” A video from Telegram channel Syktyvkar01 made from several kilometres afar shows a major column of black smoke over the area. Lukoil has not issued any official information about the blaze, but representatives of the company told KomiInform that there was an “insignificant outbreak of fire” and that it was “swiftly extinguished.”

The situation in Usinsk fire comes only two months after another refinery in the region came ablaze. Two people were killed when one of the reservoirs of the refinery in Ukhta caught fire. Locals are now increasingly concerned about the situation, local media reports. The oil processing industry is of major importance for the north Russian region and the local population is at odds over the possible reasons behind the emergencies. The fires in Komi come as Ukrainian forces successfully have managed to target military objects and industrial families across major parts of central Russia. In July, a Ukrainian drone reportedly managed to damage two strategic bombers based in Olenya, the air field in the Kola Peninsula.

Draw your own conclusions.....

Russia calls on the international community "to strongly condemn the Kyiv regime's criminal attacks on Russian territory," said Russian Foreign Ministry press secretary Zakharova.

You can try to appeal to the UN.

Reports coming in about a shot down Russian fighter jet. Unclear where and which type, but presumably in the Kursk direction. According to Russian sources, Ukrainian DRG units have already reached the village of Korenovo, some 20-25km from the breached border. According to Russian channels. Putin has convened the Russian Security Council at 13:00.

The Ukrainian Armed Forces have liberated the settlements of Dar'ino, Sverdlikovo and Gogolivka according to Russian sources. Honcharivka and Oleshnya are also said to be taken by UA forces but this is not confirmed (Honcharivka looks unlikely still). Russian sources claim strikes are carried out on Ukrainian concentrations in/near Makhnovka, which is just south of Sudzha and would confirm that Ukrainian forces have made more ground gains there, and the advance has not just stopped at the villages from previous post. Multiple Russian sources confirm that Ukraine has pulled up a fair amount of air defense near the Kursk region, which makes it hard for Russian aviation to give close air support to defending units.

Russian General Apti Alaudinov, commander of Akhmat special forces unit, stated that the Ukrainian Armed Forces do not have the resources to capture the Kursk nuclear power plant.Well, if the AFU ever makes it to the Kursk NPP, it won't be facing your TikTok troops as they will seek for 'more favourable positions', isn't it

Russian Telegram channel Fighterbomber also extremely unhappy. "If the Ukrainians manage to breach the area around the nuclear power plant, the use of aviation and heavy weapons will be restricted, requiring infantry to dislodge them despite Ukraine's significant advantage in FPV drones. The rapid advance of 15 km in a day highlights the urgency of the situation. The main concern is not just the occupied territories or drones, but the local population, who could be used as human shields by the Ukrainians and whose evacuation is being hindered, even by lethal means," he sounds a little worried.

Thanks for all of the good news, Chloe.

I’m hoping that Kamala will get far enough ahead in the polls that Putin will throw in the towel in Ukraine.

As long as Trump has hope, Putin has a chance. 😉

Russia will need to give up Kursk Oblast to prevent further escalation.

One of the most well-known Russian Z-military correspondents, Yevgeny Poddubny, has been eliminated by an FPV drone. His channel has over 700,000 subscribers and he has been present in all of the Kremlin’s wars of the past decade+, including the Donbas in 2014. He went to cover the situation in the Kursk region and was live-streaming just few hours ago. He was conducting a report from Kurshchyna, talking about "great losses" - and is apparently now one of them.

Poddubny is one of the best known Russian Z-military correspondents and spent significant time in Syria as well as Ukraine. The death was originally reported by a Duma MP Mikhail Delyagin, who then came under criticism over premature reports and edited the message. If his death turns out to be true, that's a great hit!
