Haiku

nevermind, i forget. it's too darn humid to think straight.

oh the questions in the first post.

like what's your favourite haiku? and what do you expect to see when you go to read a haiku?

just those two little bitty questions. answer them, it'll be like picking strawberries, i promise.

i don't read haiku much.

don't really have a favorite - don't like any of them really, not much anyway -so i don't expect much from them.

i just came here to annoy you. :D

a bushel of strawberries . . . now you're talkin'.

If you're too hot, you might want to loosen your blouse a bit.

Now, now. Don't misinterpret. Air circulation—allows the capillaries to cool the blood.

Your blood, anyway. :)

you really think i'm wearing a shirt in this heat?

:D

i'd debate the word 'knows' - but then that's cos i'm still learning. :D

i have to rush off now. family birthday gathering. i may disappear into the bush out the back and cogitate or meditate or something during the course of the night. who knows where the next ku will appear? :)

goldustwoman :) thanks for the links, i'll take a look in the morning. much appreciated. :) and if you're interested, check out ALL the other essays jthserra wrote. they're well worth the read.

Art, what's your preference, your 'preferred expectation' when you read a Haiku?

Nature;

I enjoy reading people, if it says Haiku attached to the title or in suggestion I know what the poem will be structured as but like a house (big or small), you don't know what the furniture is like till you go inside. You don't know if they are going to show you the food in the kitchen or their closet or the green house or even the bedroom <grin

Here is 'a' favorite of mine but note the poets emotions inlayed into the poem makes the poem powerful and beautiful <grin>
example;

Weeping Cherry Blossoms

tranquil reflections
in dawn's tears

wso

notice this person never let you into their house but instead led you to a tree outside <grin. if you are reading this then you are propbably a poetry pearl hunter too!

The old pond --
a frog jumps in,
the sound of water
I read a collection of different translations of this classic (Japanese, I assume) haiku once, and it was interresting how different they could become.

The most extreme version was this condensed creation:
pond
frog
plop
If anyone knows what collection this is, I'd be grateful to find and read it again.

i wonder if

pond
frog
jump

would be worth considering.

The Old Pond - variations
very interesting aren't they?

some translations are very different from the famous one we all know.

goldustwoman, i see Haiku variations in those links that don't fall under the 5-7-5 rule. the Shadow Poetry link seems to give a good definition. :)

Lauren had what they called SHOOT OUTS. I would love to see another, I made one called Dueling Samurai, jim was one of the HAIKU judges. Two or more, meet on a certain night, like a friday night, you have 30 minutes to write a haiku, a judge picks the topic and lays it out at a certain time ...example 8.00pm and at 8;30 they must turn in there poem. The three judges have 24 hours to post their results. The next night the votes are displayed. It was thrilling. The one lauren had (the shoot out) was any style poem. It was hard to write within the time frame on a topic tossed at you, hers was "What is poetry" and you couldn't use certain words like poetry, mind, and some others (a list) I wrote P*e*r*?

Any one for some Haiku-fu?

laughing, I am gonna have to recite that one <grin

i dunno.

wear a satisfied smirk for a day?

good point though, what is the point to knowing how to do this stuff?

actually, the answer for me is not so much knowing how to write Haiku, more that it's knowing how to 'feel' Haiku, at one with nature. and stuff.

In order to be a chess master you must play some chess. In order to be a ball player you have to play a few games. In order to...well you get the picture <grin
