Holiday Traditions

I'm making my traditional New Year's Day food, pork roast and sauerkraut. No black eyed peas for me, thank you!

I jugs think you all should know that tomorrow is Peculiar People Day. Now, I'm not casting aspersion on you but should you like to think of me tomorrow might be a good day :)

I shall especially think of many of my favorite people tomorrow. With bells on my motley. :D

I'm not very good with sending snail mail greetings. I never remember birthdays (I don't celebrate my own so I just don't see the big deal) and I'm not good at planning greetings for certain holidays. We received a nengajo around Christmas and I was late in returning the card. I sent two, and I'm a little embarrassed as my handwriting is not very nice and I don't really enjoy writing out kanji. Technically I should have used more kanji, but I can get away with less formal etiquette because white. σ^_^;

This is a tradition that I am not quite consistent with, but I want to be better about it. Sending a card is such a nice gesture for most occasions so I hope that it is something I can really put into my routine.

I hear you. Sending cards is something I am terrible at. I don't even try any more  It just wasn't part of the routine when I was a kid. My mother didn't do it, and I don't think to do it either. The only time I do think about it is at Christmas time, and then I'm usually so busy it just doesn't happen. I would like to change that, maybe not for Christmas but at least for birthdays. I think about those about 2 days ahead is time, then forget to call on the day. Pretty unacceptable!

I would like to watch the Kitten Bowl but I has no Hallmark Channel. Guess I'll just have to watch the Puppy Bowl with Kitten Cheerleaders. Damn!

Happy St. Valentine's Day, everyone :)

April 1st coming up!!

I have my prank planned for my nephew...
He isn't allowed to eat his chocolate Easter bunny until this weekend, as he is eating the smaller bits of candy during the week. I am going to chop off an enormous hunk and hide it, so when he goes for the bunny there will be little left :D

Ok, I had to negotiate with my SIL. I'm only allowed to chop off the ears  but I'm good to go. Woohoo!! Things like this are why I'm his favourite Aunt :p No, really!

April Fool's Day has been cancelled this year because this year nothing could possibly be more implausible than what's already happening.

I'm still hoping Trump will announce that his candidacy was a really elaborate prank. :p

I suspect that he wasn't completely serious at first but he just wanted the affirmation of getting some votes and finishing ahead of a few of the professional pols in a few primaries. But it turns out that the racism and ethnocentrism that he choose as the central issues of his candidacy are far more popular among Republicans than many in the party wanted to believe. Now that he has been in the lead for so long, I think he will either self-destruct to get out of the full responsibility of being the official party nominee or he will tear the party apart while running as the nominee. Neither outcome will be especially good for the country apart from the likelihood that a liberal will win the presidency.

nice one, c.a.c <3
i *wanted*, most desperately, to tell my kids that they could stay off school today and we would all watch tv and eat candy all day. HA!
but they have little to no sense of humour.
so i did it in my head and laughed madly while they just side eyed me. :)

mwy: i am trying to ignore the news so missed what the drumpf is up to... :( now that harper is gone here, i am really feeling for you folk across the border. (sad face is for drumpf...hysterically happy face is for harper being gone...though we won't start talking about baby trudeau yet. still waiting a bit longer before i decide that i need to move to iceland asap).

It is like watching absurd theatre.

It would be fun, if it wasn't about actually handing him the keys to one of the world's largest WMD stockpiles and armies. Not to mention, that a US economic collapse could be triggered by it.
(And when America farts, the smell is shared with the rest of the world)

That is scary as well.
Something that I really considered to be classic European left wing anti-American propaganda, but now in full bloom for real.
It is like when North Korean leaders try to outdo themselves in being "dictatorish".

But I also agree, that he will probably lose the election. There must be a majority of Americans that are smarter than that.
And should the GOP try to stop him, the party will split, and he will lose too.

Preferably together with an assortment of politicians from around here too.

The worst part about this is seeing how deep the roots are, of these topics brought up by political cadidates who would otherwise have been nothing but drama on the margins.
Sadly, its no different here.

I've always (only half) joked about how every third person is an idiot, but felt safe that they'd be idiots in different directions enough not to be a political threat.
Seeing the support being gathered for these views now, I'm not so sure and somehow the climate seems to change in the debate as a whole. It's not just the crazy people on the fringe anymore.
These days I'm worried.

Usually J and I have been in Tallinn for midsummer, but because his mother's cancer situation is worse than expected, we're gonna spend mid summer with his family in a very traditional way.

Summer cottage by a lake, bonfires, sauna, fishing, going to a midsummer dance if his mom feels up to it, picking flowers for some midsummer magic, etc.

Basically the only traditions we plan to leave out are getting wicked hammered and drown.

Oh right! Drink and drown, I remember that. It does sound like a perfectly picturesque midsummer, though. I hope you all find it as such.

Oh right! Drink and drown, I remember that. .....

It is an old and proud Scandinavian tradition!

"Have booze, will drown"

In Sweden more people are said to drown, than get killed in traffic around midsummer.

(Traffic safety is pretty good in Scandinavia)

I checked the stats for last year.

Three drowned, two died in traffic, two simply died because of too much booze, one was stabbed to death and one burned to death after passing out while he was warming up a wood burning sauna (another midsummer classic we won't replicate).

Here traffic safety isn't particularly good. Then again, we're not a part of Scandinavia. (Finland: 4.8 traffic deaths /100k inhabitants, Denmark: 3.5, Sweden: 2.8, Norway: 3.8)
