How many positions do you like to have in a scene?

As many as the story requires, which is very often just one within a given sex scene.

Boy, is this a timely question!

I've been struggling with how to make a scene unique without making it look like a choreographer was whispering instructions from the closet.

At first I was going to give this question the same answer that others have. Basically, it depends. As it turns out, that part of my process is someting that Quintin Tarrentino and I have in common. (Probably the only thing. He is talented and rich and I am neither.)

He once said that when he writes, at first he controls his characters. He puts them in situations and defines who they are, either in his head or on the page. At some point in his writing, the characters take over. He ends up writing what the characters would naturally do in each situation and many times, that is not what he had in mind when he started or he hadn't gotten that far in his thinking.

That is how it is for me. I get things started and off they go. I just have to keep up with the writing.

So to get back to the question, my real (final) answer is, "I have no idea." What positions they will take, what they will do, what they will say, etc. gets determined in almost real time. Now of course if I don't like what they did, I'll back up, change something, and let them start again.

Kind of fun really. It's like I am looking down on a play with a miniature set and miniature actors. I am watching and writing and then all of a sudden they need something. Whoosh, from off stage my giant hand brings in that bottle of champagne, the dildo, the Ferrari, the third person to make it a threesome, whatever they need to keep the story going. If it stalls in some dead end, I reset and we start over.

Maybe I should remember all of this if I ever go into psychoanalysis.

Illustrated kama sutra position charts can be found on the Internet. I use them.

This is an excellent idea, which I haven't used. I'm going to try this. It could add some interest to the narrative of the sex.

Depends on the number of people involved. But I like to include multiple positions because my stories are jack off material and the more imagined, the beter.

Usually 2 or 3, sometimes it is a quickie and they have just 1. Sometimes it might be 4 but not very often.

Same as real life. Two before a bust, a cool down, and maybe two or three more. It depends if the characters are drunk. Cause that Henny dick hit different... 😝 if you know, you know.

Doesn't it depend upon the characters and what they would be doing? Seems to me, if you determine a set amount of positions, you, the author is dictating the action rather than the characters you are creating and bringing to life telling the reader what the action is. It is for your characters and your story to determine. You can't perform the Kama Sutra in the backseat of a Chevy Bolt. But with different characters and siturations, maybe they are hanging from the ceiling fucking their brains out. Is it a formula the characters dictating the story? For me, it is the characters every time.

When you are writing a scene, how many positions do you like to have?

As I'm writing, I'm finding that I really don't want to write the typical lick, suck fuck format, and am favoring to a single position or two where it makes sense for the scene.

I'm really wanting to write stories where there is sex, and for there to be some truthiness to them.

And I know that write how you want is going to be a response, I'm curious how other writers feel about it.
I'm with you on not making stories like the typical porn movie; change positions every minute or two, then on cue, cum on: face, breasts, back, all-of-the-above, etc. etc.

I don't know, is it a gangbang, threesome, or more-some? Are they gay, lesbian, bi, or straight? How many different sex scenes do you plan for the story? Is it the first scene in the story? I mean, there are a lot of variables to consider.

Funny this one comes up just now.

The story I'm currently writing, due to the nature of the premise, has multiple opportunities for quite a few sex scenes.

That said, I'm not interested in writing out a bunch of full fledged scenes for EVERY part.

So im kinda picking and choosing my moments; some will be longer than others. Some, fully fleshed out. Others, skipped over or quickly summed up.

I think ultimately it depends on the story you wanna tell.

I've said it multiple times: nothing wrong with writing a straight up sex story. Short on plot, long on fucking.

There's certainly an audience here for those.

But if you're trying to write something more complex, sometimes too much sex can simply bog the story down.

In the end: write what's best for the story you're trying to tell.

If you feel it needs more sex, go for it.

But there's nothing wrong with editing down the sex to keep a story moving, either.

Depends on level of preparation required and endurance. If we're counting fingering and oral as separate positions gay male scenes will probably have more than straight vaginal scenes do.

But honestly, I don't keep track. Just go with the flow and maybe consider character comfort. Some positions are hard to hold for long periods of time without getting sore.

Only one position mostly.

I strive for realism rather than porn-style sex, and since the average intercourse lasts 5.4 minutes, there isn't time to run through the entire Kama Sutra anyway.

Ah, the Spinal Tap Rule.
Marty DiBergi: Does that mean it's louder? Is it any louder?

Nigel Tufnel: Well, it's one louder, isn't it? It's not ten. You see, most blokes, you know, will be playing at ten. You're on ten here, all the way up, all the way up, all the way up, you're on ten on your guitar. Where can you go from there? Where?

Marty DiBergi: Why don't you just make ten louder and make ten be the top number and make that a little louder?

Nigel Tufnel: [pause] These go to eleven.

I try to stay realistic, go with the flow, unscripted mostly. I will let the characters drive the action- if someone is impish or respectful or whatever, it will be shown off. Most are slow & steady like me, but if release happens quickly they appreciate that and then keep things going until all characters in the action plus the outside observer (me as reader) are satisfied. I try to keep things simple- I don’t know what an ostrich tail is. I favor stuff that’s easy to visualize- I think DP or sapphic triangles is the craziest I’ve done. Usually it’s just fingering tribadism or missionary or 69 or one character doing oral while the other enjoys it. Usually the female is dominant in arranging comfortable positions. I have yet to write a sex scene without a female participant. The challenge is appealing, but I haven’t met it yet. I also try to write in something new with each story that fits my current mood. Usually I let the characters suggest it.
