I miss the fitness threads and the fitness Doms!

Spent a good portion of Friday and today in a chiropractor's office. She has a secondary specialty in sports medicine and was recommended by a friend. My back had been very painful from around the holidays or a bit before and I finally gave in and called for an appointment a couple weeks ago. Now that I've seen the x-rays and have had some initial treatment, I'm glad I did. Some of the vertabrae in my lumbar region are degenerating and one is pushed forward a bit; there is also a marked sideways curvature of the spine in this region so it's no surprise that I hurt like hell. For now, the only exercise that's available to me is walking and sometime soon I'll get some direction from the chiro for stretching and strengthening exercises. For now, it's twice-weekly treatments and a prescription to hook up a fire hose to my throat and consume as much water as I can without drowning.

Thanks, Fury!

Um, y'all are falling apart on me! There's a lot going around these days. Eek!

Me? Generally I hate to bitch and moan but...I have had a respiratory infection going on 5 weeks now. Two courses of antibiotics, prescription nasal spray, codeine, neti pot, the full meal deal. Still plugged up, still coughing. I told L the next time he comes down with a cold he's going to a hotel.

So, needless to say, been couching it a lot, though that worked out perfectly with my work schedule. Still...blerg.

ITW, the eating thing is tricky. Everyone's metabolism is so different and counting calories can be such a pain in the ass. It may just take some trial and error. I'm at the point, with my eating, where I don't have to think about it. I keep my portion sizes small - much smaller than I think I need - and stick to mostly healthy stuff, with the ocassional treat. And I'm holding steady no matter how much I exercise, at 42, with hypothyroid. But it took a lot of time to get to this point.

Staying lean enough to show off your muscles can really put a strain on your body, so don't get too caught up in that.

But but but -- I like to show off my muscles! Okay, but seriously, I look toned in the good areas, not super cut or anything, so I should be fine. I mean, I'm only looking at normal BMI here! If I lose more after that, I don't want to starve myself to do it. Of course, I'm not really starving myself now. Just being very careful. I think it needs to be more habit and less OCD-diet mode, you know? And I need to figure out how often I can cheat. I want to make a dessert now and again.

I think you're right - trial and error. I need to be in it for the long term, so I can take my time.

Sorry to hear so many of you have been sick.
MWY- ouch! Glad you got that checked before you did some more serious damage.

As for me, I've been on a bit of an indulgence pattern and though I'm still loosing every week, that extra couple of drinks a week and "Just one bite...well maybe two" self sabotage means I'm only down ounces a week instead of pounds.

The next big milestone is seeing that first number change from a 2 to a 1. I'm so close. I don't know why I can't seem to just get on with it.

History has shown though that the more I worry about it, the harder time I have so I'm just going to coast for a while and wait for inspiration.

MWY - A guy I know from a consultant gig turned my on to chiro. I've dealt with it peripherally for years in the insurance side of the biz, but never thought about it. I was having trouble with my hip, of all things, and he convinced me to go, going so far as to pay for the visit. Man, was I ever glad I went.

The big thing is that this chiro guy is huge. He's built like me, but probably 3-4" taller, and thus he's got no problems working on me. I've had a coupla chiros try to show techniques on me before and just didn't get much. This guy can really make things pop.

ITW - I really wish I could give you advice on maintenance, but it utterly eludes me no matter what I do. I'm either losing or gaining, period. Congrats on closing in on your goal. Sounds like you're looking great.

K - *hugs* - E-hugs only, cause yer sick :p Actually I just got over some ick myself, so I sympathize. A buddy of mine, his wife, and all four kids recently caught a viral thing that was a combination of strep and conjunctivitis. Talk about misery.

As for me, well, meh. Very little is happening. Time to work harder.

I invested in a pedometer last week. It has been a happy-making investment: I walk far more than I thought I did just in my daily routine (desk-worker who enjoys walking her dog). I was averaging 12,000 steps a day BEFORE making any attempt to increase my walking, and this morning that spurred me on to add in an extra dog-walk before work. Add my 3 or 4 gym visits a week, and I feel far less couch-potatoish than I had unthinkingly assumed I was.

Studies show that people routinely overestimate the amount of exercise they get. Seems I'm the exception that proves the rule ;)

My pedometer has made me very happy :D

bumpity bump. How's everyone doing?

My husband looked at me coming out of the shower the other day and said, wow, you have abs. :D

Getting very close to goal weight now and the big question is going to be how to maintain. I know it should be as simple as eat healthy foods and eat only when you're hungry, but I think it's very easy for me to think I'm hungrier than I am or accidentally overeat a bit at a time.

I'm not going to be logging calories forever -- maybe I could do it once a month for a few days? That's not a bad idea actually. I suppose I should do an internet search for weight maintenance. I'm sure there's plenty of advice out there.

p.s. I'm about to cross a weight threshold I haven't crossed for about ten years! I do wonder if I can actually do it but I seem to still be losing. We'll see, I guess.

Congrats on the Abs!
I'm not quite there, but my calves are looking awesome.
For calorie counting I use the myfitnesspal app on my iPhone. It's the most convenient way to keep track of calories & exercise that I have found. You can program it to your goal (maintaining) and it will calculate the number of calories you should be taking in. Enter your foods & exercise and after a while, you will probably have a good idea of what you need to do to stay in the calorie range that works for you.

I'm down 16 pounds so I'm making progress in the right direction but it feels slow. I'm finally starting to see the changes in how my clothes fit and look. I am absolutely stronger at this weight than I have been in the past so I'm confident I'm building muscle and I'm hoping that is part of why my numbers have been coming down slowly.

With spring right around the corner, I have my most favorite sundress hanging on the outside of my closet door for motivation.

I hope all of you get to feeling better soon!

I have to be honest...I look totally amazing. Ha just kidding. I'm psyched to be able to fit into everything I own, and looking forward to losing just a bit more. And p.s. - I do burpees all the time now, like they're nothing! Ok, almost nothing.

Congrats on the Abs!

Calves and arms are the first!

I use LiveStrong's calorie counter and I like it a lot. I just don't want to log calories for the rest of my life. I think if i don't have some accountability though I will slip into unconscious eating again. And I don't eat unhealthily, but eating too much of anything will eventually catch up with you. Well, except lettuce. ;)

I need to stop drinking. I was feeling SO much better about my fitness and my weight. and then I went a drunk a ton of beer and feel like a blimp again. pllp

I'm feeling a tiny bit better. I have such a busy two weeks before me that I'm scared that I won't get everything done and done well. I'd like to start doing at least some gentle yoga even when I'm sick though.

:rose:

New favorite snack to satisfy the salty chips craving...edamame.
You can get it in pouches ready to steam in the microwave. Sprinkle it with coarse sea salt and then suck the pods out of the shells to get the salt taste.
Lots of protein so they are filling too.

I'm not surprised that you feel a little large-ish after such an indulgence. At 8.345404 pounds per gallon, your ton (2,000 pounds) of beer was 239.65286 gallons - which is a helluva lot of liquid.

Musta been some hangover, too. ;)

I drank that much once......once.

Edited because I am dyslexic.

Time for a bit of update. I'm slowly falling in love with my chiropractor - if only because she is working miracles on my ancient and twisted spine. She's also pretty, athletic, and smart, which are positives in my world.

After three treatments the back is beginning to feel more relaxed and the pain is down by about half. Range of motion is wider, too, which is a big improvement. This morning, for the first time in several months, I was able to step into my shorts with only mild pain. And getting into my jeans was pain-free for the first time since well before Thanksgiving.

I'm now cleared to do some stretching exercises and will soon start on some core strengthening.

The therapeutic massages have been a dramatic mix of glorious soothingness and remarkably intense pain as the masseuses get deeper and deeper into problem tissues. And when they use the rolling pin on my ilio-tibial bands I come as close to becoming the murder feature on the six-o'clock news as I ever.

All in all, progress is good. So is staying off the six o'clock news.

oh you. You're so clever. Fine I did not have a "ton" of beer :p I had uhm *thinks* 6 or 7 beers? And no hangover :p I'm young enough that my liver still functions optimally.

Interesting new book. Sounds very down to earth.

Perhaps a good read for those trying to lose weight and confused by the all the info out there.

Could you provide the title and author? The link doesn't work and I'm having trouble finding a book review at the Edmonton Journal site that matches your description. Thank you.

Sorry, I fixed the link. But the author's name is Timothy Caulfield and the book title is The Cure For Everything! Untangling the Twisted Messages About Health, Fitness and Happiness.

Going only by the title, don't think I'd buy it.

So the weight are getting heavier as I get back into it, and I get a lot more pumped for a lot longer, and the ladys take notice.

I've been wondering, a work out to improve your sex life. Not just appearances, but fucking longer, harder, faster.

Cardio is a given, but how to work out that thrusting action? Umm, without a woman... or a dude.

Well, this sounds odd to say (because it should be so obvious), but I'm newly obsessed with evidence-based...everything! I suppose it might be better to call it the skeptical movement. So the book sounds promising.

I mean, for example, I don't think the paleo diet sounds all that bad, but is there any evidence that we should be eating like cavemen? Do grains, dairy, etc. really need to be eliminated from our diets? Absent an allergy of course.

Keroin, that looks like a decent book you linked to... smiling wryly here at "Shock! Horror! Fads don't work! Eating real food, not overeating, and getting some vigorous exercise DOES work!!". Who woulda thunk lol.

Ignore the title. It's science based. I would think that would appeal to you.

I have long been skeptical...of everything. But the diet/health/fitness fads make me extremely leery. No, grain does not have to be eliminated from our diets. WTF? Silly. I know, every year it's something new.

LOL. It's sad that this kind of book should even have to be written. But it's cool to finally see something out there that actively debunks these ridiculous myths.
