I miss the fitness threads and the fitness Doms!

*sigh* Muscle/lung wise I'm doing much better running...but I'm struggling with this ridiculous pain in my lower leg. It's between my ankle-region and the bottom of the belly of my calf muscles. I've got new shoes that are HELPING, but I still hurt enough that I feel like I have to stop running :(

Still, between walking and my abbreviated running, I'm still burning a couple hundred extra calories...so...better than nothing?

I wish there was a boxing class tonight so I could pretend to thump someone

So yesterday I started working out again. My "work out" hardly would count as one to a normal person, but I've been doing pretty much nothing, apart from occasional brisk walks and skating, for 3 months. Today I could hardly roll myself out of bed and it's making me sad. You're not supposed to be this beat after the little I did.

But back on the horse, I guess.

Well done. I'm always amazed at how quickly fitness comes back after a break. The first couple of sessions kill you but if you persist it comes back very quickly...

My respiratory hell is over. I am out of re-write purgatory. Snow is off the ground.

I have begun daily walks to build up strength again. Hope to be running by the end of the month. April 1st the tennis club re-opens for the season! :D

But boy February was loooooooooong.

Here's to a spring full of health and fitness and fun everyone! Get outside and play!!

I'm glad everything is going better for you!!!

We went outside to play today since it was AMAZING weather. We went running with the dogs at a local nature park with a lot of nice hills and trails. Rolled my ankle once, but managed to recover after a bit of a walk. Jogged/ran (it's amazing how much a raise in temperature and incline detracts from your performance!) just fine, but then I rolled it again just walking through some brush. That was the last little bit and now my ankle's good and sprained XD. RICE here we come...

Frustrating is that, despite exercising more (if not every day) and cutting back my calories (eg. today I only ate a little over 1500 calories and I exercised about 300 calories worth), I'm still just not dropping weight. I feel a little better--which is great!--but it almost makes it MORE frustrating. It feels like things are improving...but no progress is being made.

I just want the "Beer belly' to go away, dammit!!! >_<

Congrats! It really is gorgeous. Ahhhh.

And Men's Health came today. Pretending that I'm gonna incorporate all the workout and nutrition info always gives me a boost.

Word.

Despite a hail storm today, it is looking decidedly less winter-ish around here. I have even seen street sweepers making the rounds...the first sign of the change in season!

The temp even climbed to a balmy +11C. (51F) :D

What are you doing for ankle exercises when you're not in 'sprain' mode? As someone who is a sprain/flake fracture veteran, I can't over emphasize the importance of strengthening and training all those little muscles around the joint. If you don't, you'll just end up doing the same damage over and over again (voice of experience talking).

I know money is tight for you, but however you can manage it, get your hands on a pair of these discs...

You will thank me. You will probably name your first born after me. ;)

But seriously, if you get one (at least one) let me know and I will give you a fuckton of simple exercises you can do at home that will save your ankles in the future. For now, let it heal. Sprains take a minimum of 4-6 weeks before you should even consider trotting around on them.

maybe i'll look into it. a lot of the pain i've had running has involved the structural support around the ankle (albeit, not from a strain/sprain perspective. the higher support structures is where I've been having problems).

Do you have any recommendations for cardio-type exercises while I let my ankle get better? I usually do some calisthenic work when I can't run but want to exercise, but I think those would put strain on the ankle injury.

A couple of good links on ankle sprains:

http://www.mckinley.illinois.edu/handouts/anklesprain/anklesprain.html

http://www.aafp.org/afp/2001/0101/p93.html

The thing about ankle sprains is that they most often have nothing to do with strength or flexibility or endurance, and everything to do with balance and agility. With proprioceptive training, (eg. the balance disc or wobble board), you can train all those supporting muscles that keep you stabilized when running. If you've sprained an ankle once, you've already upped the odds that you will sprain it again. Proprioceptive training has been shown to reduce the chances of re-spraining by over 35%.

*BUT that kind of training is only for when the ankle is fully functional and weight bearing again.

I'm a huge fan of swimming and you can do that without using your feet. Every public swimming pool I've been to has both kick boards and pull buoys. The latter is what you want. It gives your lower body buoyancy so that you can swim with just your arms. It's a helluva a cardio workout with no strain on your ankle at all.

Other than that, I do resistance exercises that focus on the upper body and up the intensity. (Sit ups, knee-push ups, dips, etc).

I didn't exactly get pleasure out of this book. **Ageless**: The Naked Truth About Bioidentical Hormones by Suzanne Somers

The latest fad in health, aging and beauty. Any fads in this area are almost always unhealthy, full of lies and short lived. This one is mostly B.S. Never was it more clear to me, that this was so, than when she talked about how eating veggie or vegan throws your hormones out of whack and does you in. Right.

Also, there is no ONE RIGHT ANWER to every health, aging or beauty issue.

I don't believe in diets at all.

This half-day hill-walking EVERY weekend, on top of the 2+ hours of walking I do daily with my dog, is making my whole body feel healthy.

Keroin--Thanks for the recommendations for my ankle :) I've just been doing nice long walks out and about or on the treadmill. I can study on the treadmill so it's a good multi-task!

I don't know wtf happened but all of a sudden my erratic weight scale is telling me I'm almost down to 160 lbs. Like, consistently. It's always off a lb or two if I step on and off of it (it's one of those old cheap-ass analog scales), but it's still reassuring! I really think a big difference is that I've been riding my horse more. It doesn't make sense, I suppose, but I feel like my body's going "OH! Well! I know how this works! I can respond to this exercise appropriately!!"

She makes it sound soooooo believable too. People are literally BUYING it. If you call it "natural" it's good philosophy here.

And, btw, I would so NOT want to look like her. I never found her attractive. I certainly don't think she's aged well but whatevs. Others do. It seems.

Awesome! Ride your way to weight loss! Love it!

Weight loss and greater happiness! I'm always in a better mood when I'm riding consistently, and I'm finally getting my confidence back on my mare! YAY! :D This next week is spring break and I'm going to try to work my friend's horses for her as well. So lots of riding!
