I miss the fitness threads and the fitness Doms!

Is sneezing exercise?

I am pretty sure that I heard once that vigorous sex was exercise :) I know what I am doing. HAHAHA

I work out at home. I got mad at myself after I was working this stupid desk job, and stopped running. I will start running again when it doesn't get dark at 5 pm and intersperse it with my current workouts.

Since I still can't freakin' run and I still can't get into the orthopedist, I'm just going to go to our student clinic since holidays are over and they actually have some extended hours again. Hopefully they can think of some answers...

After years of pain, effort, and pouring energy into recovery from severe neck injury, reconstructive foot surgery, and two c-sections, I can happily boast that I've finally gotten back to pre-pregnancy size and can pass my military PT test. Feeling pretty awesome today!

That IS pretty awesome! Well done :D

Fantastic! You ARE awesome!

Present verdict on the foot: same thing the first orthopedist told me in terms of treament...CAM boot for 4-6 weeks. Difference is that this orthopedic P.A. actually talked to me about what she found and her thoughts instead of just tossing me out the door with instructions. She's thinking it's probably extensor tendonitis, which makes sense (and I was suspecting as well). *sigh* so much for running any time soon...

Sorry. *hugs* Glad you found a doctor who will talk with you though!

I watched this author on The Daily Show. While I wasn't overly shocked by what he had to say, it was still sad and scary.

This NYT article is long but well worth the read. If you ever doubted that we're being manipulated by big food companies, this should put and end to that.

"Vanishing caloric denisty"...*shudders*

Thanks for the link. Scary but interesting stuff.

How out of shape am I, when an orgasm gives me sore glutes for two days? Yipes

To be fair, orgasms can cause a rather profound muscle tightening, and you don't have to work "hard" to be sore, just different. I've seen very fit people get off horses INCREDIBLY sore because, shocker, you just don't use those muscles much in a gym or on a field!

If it makes you feel at all better, I once had an orgasm ruined because I had a muscle cramp up on me entirely :p

It always cracks me up when the gym buff fit guys do a PT session I put together. Most of them ache like hell the next day. Apparantly the tiny muscles I have to control for dance are unfamiliar territory for the grunting "me lift heavy things and run fast" brigade.

Reverse dip lunges whilst standing on the balls of your feet is a classic that I get a giggle out of watching. Don't even get me started on the expansion - contraction exercises...

I know you're using English, but I have no idea what you're saying :p

For horse back riding, what usually KILLS people are their leg adductors, with some generic soreness throughout the core/glutes/thighs. But the adductors are what hits you HARD...and you start to realize the next day how much you use those muscles JUST TO STAND :p

Personally, I don't get very sore from riding any more, even when I'm out of shape. It's just what my body knows. I'm sure you get a similar effect from dancing.

I went to the ENT last week. Seems I've shrunk an inch, now I'm 5'8" and at 165 I've gained weight. According to a BMI chart I found this means I'm officially overweight.

Could be measurement error. I'd ask for a second opinion. Also, on the alleged weight gain: did you remember to trim your nails and clean off your makeup before going to the doc's office? Every little bit of preparation helps, you know.

Take your BMI with some salt. Compare it's "overweight" with something like a body fat % calculation (less accurate than an actual measurement, but still more accurate than BMI at estimating how much fat you have!). If you have a reasonable amount of muscle, it'll be off and you haven't ACTUALLY shrank an inch. Your vertebrae don't shrink and nothing "goes away". You've just compressed a bit, but everything is still there, so I don't think it's necessarily fair to yourself to assume you have the same body mass as someone who started that height!

No I didn't take off my make up. LOL

At this point nothing I do seems to help with my weight. I'm trying to be grateful and gracious in this aging time but damn.

It's very difficult to exercise when you have frequent fevers and dizziness. Could be due to menopause or sinus issues or both.

I'm the sort that does better when I have someone to exercise with or report back to and something I do everyday.

Though I generally can rise to any occasion physically, I'm grateful for that, I do have constant sinus issues. Recently, for instance I was in New Orleans. I somehow hurt my foot on the first day. But I STILL was able to not only keep going but to walk from the French Quarter to Magazine Street and down most of that.

If the foot doesn't' get better soon I probably need to see some doctor for it. I was thinking it would be better by now.

I'm used to being pretty thin. I do think people like me more "rounded" though. LOL More average. In my head my ideal weight range is still (from high school) 105-115 pounds. I feel like I look pregnant now. I long for the days when my tummy was concave. *le sigh*

I rarely eat out. I eat little and well. I drink tons of water but since turning 50, nothing really matters, it seems.

Btw, I'm glad I did my picture thread way back when. I'm glad to remember being thinner.

Well if it makes you feel at all better, they've done some retrospective statistical studies that show that being a little "overweight" is associated with a longer lifespan than someone who is "skinny". Turns out, our bodies like to have fat stores and reserves. And, honestly, I think that even 115 at 5'8" is probably too skinny! I mean, I was at my best at 125, and I'm only 5'5"! Part of it is my personal body build, but still. Unless your bones are twigs... :p Frankly, I think 5'8" at 165 is just FINE for someone your age. You got some reserves (which I think becomes so important as the body whethers), but I think you're probably FAR from affecting your health too adversely!

In anycase, there are a LOT better measures of your "fat fitness" than your BMI/weight :) Look at those (and make sure you allocate for your age...age is NOT a disease, but it needs to be taken into account!) and judge yourself more fairly :)

<hug> *caterwauling singing voice* You are beauuutifuuull in every siingle Weeeiiigghhhhhh....Scaaales can't bring youu uuu dooowwwwwwwnnnnn

Well I hit the magic hourglass. Just a pity it's eight inches too big.
46 - 36 - 46 and 5ft 9.5in.

*sigh* why does food have to taste so good and have so many calories?

Bait for Curious_in_Cali

Fascinating article on the role that our internal bacteria play in maintaining our health - or in ruining it. Complete with a serious discussion of how eating junk food can make matters much worse in our guts through a leveraging effect on the health of our internal bacteria.

Are Happy Gut Bacteria Key to Weight Loss?

It's a long read, but well worth your time. Near the end is a link to another very good related article: Should You Take a Probiotic? which in turn offers up a link to this dandy piece of insomnia prevention, A Gastroenterologist's Guide to Probiotics (though I should point out that it didn't help my insomnia tonight).

Now that I've been cleared to exercise again following the knee surgery, I've also committed to eating better. Will try to avoid all fried foods until June as a way of setting a tangible goal. But, of course, the light meals mean that I'm hungry all the time. There has to be a better solution than keeping a bowl of carrot sticks at my desk.
