If you could pass one thing on to your child?

Wow these are some great things. Thank you all for sharing them and MM that quote definitely sums it up nicely

Well, I promised myself that I would not post here anymore, but this one hit home. Thought it would be a good place to get my feelings out, writing it out sometimes helps even more then talking.
What I would love to pass on to my child, is to treat others with respect and how you would want them to treat you . Simple I know, but so important.
What I am praying for now is that he just be healthy of mind and also body (so far we have been blessed with physical health). It's so heartbreaking to watch your son slip away from you, seeing him lose more and more control of his mind and emotions, being given a short glimpse of hope, only to have it vanish a few days later..
Sorry if I brought this thread down, I am sure this isn't what the purpose of it was. I needed to get some of it out. Sorry to say, I have exhausted all of my friends over this. Again I am sorry.

I couldnt think of just one thing that I would love to pass on. To me, there must be a balance of many important attributes to make them "whole".

I have three beautiful daughters. I look at them and wonder what the future holds for them. I hope some day to hear from their mouths that I really instilled many things in them that helped create the women they have (will) become.

Faith. Without faith there is no hope. I want them to believe in my God and all the wonderful things He has done and is doing for us as His children. To have faith in Him when all else seems out of reach.

Hope. In a better world of peace and hospitality. Hope that their dreams are attainable. Hope that love comes to those who deserve it and to those who give it.

Charity. Be it in any form. Giving of yourself to make those around you feel happy, accepted, loved, and important. It is so easy to do and in a selfish way, it brings so much to your own life by giving of yourself.

Self worth. Something I lack. But I hope I can be strong enough to give them the gift that they ARE worth it and no one can take that away. (unlike I have let people take mine away)

Pride. for them to be proud of themselves and others around them but to know enough when not to let pride become a fault.

Passion. For all good things in life. if you are passionate about anything, your reward is plentiful.

Laughter. the ability to take life for what it is worth and find a way to smile or laugh every day of their lives. And to pass that on. Pay it forward!!!!

Creativity. Speaks for itself. Be free, be creative about life, love and happiness will surround you.

Character. To let them know that you must carry yourself in an honorable fashion and your character leaves an impression on those who will meet on your journey of life.

Compassion. To be able to empathize and be compassionate towards all living things. Goes hand in hand with passion.

Diversity. That it is ok to be different and embrace it all. It would be awfully mundane if there wasnt diversity. Accept those around you that are not like you. its ok. You might learn soemthing important from them.

Knowledge. To seek out the best in life by learning as much as you can about it.

Common sense. dont be stupid child!!!!!! LOL

Ohh and to be strong respectable generous women!!

I could go on...but I wont. These are most important to me.

Lady Sam.....what a wonderful wonderful thread!!!!!

my 2 pence

just read my sig line - its kinda my concept.

but if i had to explain just one thing to my lil daughter, i'd tell her about

RESPECT

1. respect yourself
listen to your heart/soul carefully
try to differ between what's inside you or what others are
trying to implicate

2. respect other people
accept different opinions and POVs
accept experiences and fears of other people

3. respect life itself and other lifeforms nature created
there is a reason for the variety of life
though you might not reckon it right now

I agree with what you both said, cherrylips and Jewelz, I will definitely do my best to give my children, when I have them, all those things!

everyone has come up with good answers.

i will use corpral disaplin only as a last resort with my children

Wow! Such great answers...I cant think of anything new to add but I would definitely want my children to have everything that has been listed! :) Integrity, kindness, humor, and good manners are all high on my list.

Its so scary for me to think about being a parent and being responsible for another human life. I can only pray everyday that I'm a good one! Or that at least i dont screw them up too bad...lol

children need a proper upbringing, which includes all of the above mixed with the right amounts of love and disapline
