I'm just not getting all this fuss lately over feedback that is less than complimentary.

In all seriousness, I do not consider myself the next great American author. Far from it. I write naughty stories as a form of relaxation and to get a few chuckles. I post them here because, quite frankly, it feeds my ego and there is no one who would pay me to publish them. *Shrugs*

My "audience"? They are guys and gals who come here for the same reason I first started coming here - they want to wank off to something. They are not looking for "great literature" that is going to change the way they think or view life. They want masturbation stories, they want to get off. It's simple. If they stumble onto a story - and we all know we pick the stories mostly by title and the titilating verbage the author writes to entice readers - and the story doesn't get them off, guess what? They get pissed. They read through this whole story, wasn't able to get off, and now must find another story. They are frustrated, and whip off a note to the writer saying the story is shit. Yes, and so??

The point is to keep this in mind. Know your audience and why they are reading what you've written. If you get the "your story sucked" it probably has absolutely nothing to do with writing style or storytelling. It just didn't get that person off. Hopefully they found another story that did and moved on their merry way.

Truthfully? Unless some one is willing to give their email (true email addy, that is) along with criticism, why in the world would anyone take what they have to say seriously? And if it upsets one to this degree, why just turn off the anonymous feedback option. Why make your life miserable?

I've found that most of the people who have bothered to say anything at all have been more than kind about my stuff. Whether that means my stuff is any good or not is debatable. What I mostly suspect is that people who write for fun appreciate others who are writing here for fun. Dunno about you, but I'm not being paid for my posts, and until we all get paid here (yeah, right!), we need to take some consideration of the fact that not everyone writes well. If someone's story stinks, well, it stinks, and that is still no excuse for ripping them to shreds.

Unless, of course, you think of some particularly crushing slam...and then, by all means, get to it!

That was such a good post ... until that last line. What's up with that?

Maybe what everyone needs here is a thread made up entierly of just slams. The whole thread will be the best slams that everyone can come up with about about anyone and everyone else and they can be as harsh as you like or just for fun, but outside that thread, not one criticism should be worded in such a way as to come off sounding like a jerk.

We could call that thread, "Literotica Sheepdip"

Then we all know where to go to blow off steam and the rest of the site can be diabetic-coma-inducing-sweet.

Zazbek, I have enjoyed your stories, especially High School Hypnotist. I read them before PC's came out, so I'm sure I didn't PC them. But if I never told you, Thank You for the nice stoties.

Hi, I'm back briefly. Wow, 85 replies. I think that's a record. Those who posted/replied to this thread either need to get real lives OR have way too much time on their hands, or all of the above HA! Just kidding (or am I?) hmmmm.

This thread was started because I was disgusted with the worms who made rude comments in general. Actually, I really could care less what people think about my writing--it's only one opinion and everyone is entitled to their opinion, but it's the rudeness behind the comments that irked me. I know I'm a good writer and maybe I had an "off" day with that particular story. I'm not vying for the Pulitzer of Porn!!

By the way, most of the men who did look at my pics did like to wank off to them (for those who stated the obvious ha!), because they are quite nice breasts...just ask my fan club of the nice, tasteful gentlemen (you know who you are!) who sent me sweet, nice compliments regarding my pics and postings. I never said I didn't like the attention from my pics HA!!...but besides my bod, there is actually a brain behind Javagirl--go figure!! Hmmmm. Could that be possible? Wow, what a concept--a woman actually has a brain and isn't just a fuck toy.

Unlike some, I do have a day job and life...so I'll vanish once again...maybe I'll return in another month or two or three...whenever the spirit moves me again.

I do not mind less than flowery comments, providing that the person posting the negative feedback is well spoken and uses proper english.

The comments which read "I hated you're dumb story, cuz it sukd" say more about the poster than about the author.

If you have a complaint with one of the authors, at least take the time to post it in a readable form.

Geesh, I've recieved a LOT of feedback and email over the last month for the stories I've posted in that time. Each of my stories has a particular reason for being written, all of them my own. If, perchance, someone finds satisfaction in them; if it brings a smile to their face, all the better! Although I often write with the impetus to please myself, it's nice to know my reader enjoys it, as well.

I haven't recieved much in the way of negatve feedback, but what I have generally followed a simple them: "Too long", "Too boring", "Not enough sex". Well, if that's the worst that can be said, I dare say I'm on the right track!

As Mr Neb says, people write and read for different reasons. Each of my stories was written for a particular reason; sometimes personal satisfaction and at others experimentation. If the feedback I recieve, be it negative or positive, is technical in nature, referencing some mechanical feature of the story (grammar, context, dialogue, etc), I pay close attention to what the reader has to say. However, if it's more esoteric, a matter of personal observation (ie, "Too long", "Too boring", etc.), as the author, this sort of feedback serves me no useful purpose. If the same feedback is positive in nature, then it serves to bolster your ego and, perhaps, your will to continue writing. And I don't think anyone would object to having nice things said about their work!

So I believe, when you are the recipient of negative feedback of a wholly subjective nature, you're almost forced to ignore it. Not simply for the sake of saving your ego and sense of self worth, but for purely practical reasons: it's serves you no purpose. They may as well have sent you a blank response.

But none of us are robots, devoid of emotion, and when people say hurtful things, it can often strike a cord. So the challenge comes, when you must reign in control of your emotional reaction, whether the feedback is positive or negative - though in particular the negative.

It's sad to think there are people in the world that derive pleasure from harming others, but that's just the way it is. Be it on a grand scale or something as diminutive as this website, some folks find happiness in destroying that of others. So when you recieve those barbs and jabs, what more can you do, but ignore it and walk away the better person?

To Anonymous Ground Zero: where are your stories and submissions? Have you ever heard of positive reinforcement and did you bother reading any of my other stories? Also, where have your works been submitted and published? I've had many of my stories published on well-known and reputable erotica sites (and not just Literotica).

I'm tired of this site. Between pulling off my pictures and now this negative criticism regarding my writing, I've had it with the losers and posers who are making this site unwelcoming and unfriendly.

I hate pompous people and I'm tired of the negative crap from this site. Another reason to stay away from this site and the jerks who roam here.

Thank you to the NICE people and positive comments from those who have submitted comments to me about my pics and stories.

There IS a lot of attitude around here and it doesn't take long to learn that the hard way. You either have to ignore the people that can only seem to spew negativity or let them chase you away.

Hey, I understand fully what your saying. The one chapter in my novel that was supposed to be what everyone close to me was saying, (my best work yet), was hit hard. I was personally attacked. They slammed me as a person, my writing, and my morals. So, what does one do? I was ready to pull out too. I mean, that crap hurts, and hurt terribly. Now my score is ruined and I feel the work I put into that chapter was all for nought. And It all came right after my father died. So, that really bit the big one for me. Talk about an emotional plunge.......

Don't Mind Criticism

As has been said by other in posts above, we know we are not going to be the next big think in UK literature. However, we can definitely cope with positive and negative criticism. You never know, it might even help us improve our stories.

But what gets our dander up is the anonymous critics who call 'Loving Wives' women whores / slags etc and the husbands wimps. For heaven's sake, if they don't like the underlying nature of these characters why are they reading the stories?

Perhaps because they're reading in the category for the first time and are assuming the category title is literal? I don't really think of the underlying nature of a loving wife as a whore or slag, do you? And it doesn't seem to necessitate a wimp for a husband as the "underlying nature" of a loving wife story character either. Seems it may be the use of the category by authors putting stories there that's been perverted, not the expectation of someone coming to the category for the first time for a read.

(Of course I can't think of a story with much ummph that would fit in the literal meaning of a "loving wife" category.)

Actually, I'm afraid the sad but real truth of the matter is that there are people who sign on to this site for the express purpose of tracking down stories they know are going to offend their far-too-delicate sensibilities, so that they can vent their moral outrage against writers who simply set out to entertain a few folks.

It seems that the works that suffer most from these idiots are the Loving Wives stuff (as has been mentioned before) as well as bisexual male content, in whatever category it lands in.

I don't know what the solution is, except to have the people who read the stuff that's getting destroyed by the closed-minded morons to give encouragement to the author - if there's actual merit in the work.

The big thing that irks me is that the shitheads don't have balls enough to write their own stuff, then see what feedback like they're handing out feels like.
