Granted, now I've read the description of what happened and I'd probably vote negatively at this point. I could have guessed that a Springer episode wouldn't exactly be done in a Donahue-esque fashion but I thought I'd keep an open mind about it. He did have his moments as a TV news anchor and mayor, after all. One can always imagine that every now and then he actually falls back into old habits.

No, of course not! My cousin works for a German talkshow. The guests get all prepared, like they are told what to say and what to do ... Sometimes they even hire actors, or they ask staff to "jump in" (I know a cable boy who got 50 bucks for sitting in the audience and asking a pre-written question). I can only talk for German talkshows, but the Americans are usually way ahead of us ...

I voted "other" because I can't watch it here and this topic hasn't been on any talkshow I know of (yet). I do watch German talkshows every now and then for my own amusement, but I think there are more than 5 % who actually believe in this crap. Many might not actually admit it because it sounds so silly. But I'm convinced there are lots of people who secretly believe this is the real life.

So yes, I do think it can do a lot of harm.

On the other hand, what can we expect from tv? Where are the realistically portrayed police officers? Which clinic is like General Hospital? It's all about clichées, isn't it? Otherwise it'd be a documentary.

People have queer ideas about psychotherapists and about Germans, too. All I can do is clarify and educate those people I meet. I admit it's much harder to talk about BDSM issues (on the other hand: ever had to admit you study psychology? People immediately believe you are crazy ...). I'm not afraid to say what I think, and most of my friends respect that and even appreciate it. I tend to believe that, if everyone took care of the people that matter to him, a lot of people would be taken care of. I can't safe the world.

So I will stand up for a realistic picture of BDSM lifestyle whereever whenever I can, and no Jerry Springer shall prevail for his show will end some day, but I will never shut my mouth!
