Meeting Master for the first time?

No one does her any favors by defending her position...Even in the least degree.
What I would defend is her right to fuck up her own life. I have no place saving anybody from themselves. As I've said before, sometimes people need to crash and burn before it sinks in. Sometimes it never does. But that's her business, not ours. Our role is to tell her what is inadvisable about her choices and why; her role is to take that information and use or discard it.

Involuntary imprisonment and involuntary medication are for people who are a danger to others. If somebody is perfectly happy messing up their own life, they are free to do it.

Just my humble opinion.

Well that's true and from what I've seen of the way she "listens" to others, that "right" is not in the least bit of danger.

*chuckles*

Borderlines who self mutilate don't get admitted to hospitals or psych units these days (nor have they for many years). The majority of the time the cuts are superficial and since it is a repeated history, the recommendations is to refer them back to their therapist. Therapists can only do so much until the patient gets TIRED of doing this and is willing to learn a different coping mechanisms.

Personally I wouldn't waste my breath on trying to tell her to do anything since she clearly doesn't listen and loves the attention she gets from all of this.

Actually that's not true in every state. I have first hand knowledge of a lady who got herself committed for cutting, and I ended up having to watch her kid for several days because her husband was deployed.

I'm actually not BPD. I'm bipolar.

But I told my therapist and he didn't say I need to go IP. He just told me to be careful and make sure it doesn't get infected.

BPD is often diagnosed as bipolar, partly because they share some similar symptoms and partly because BPD is an Axis II disorder. Bipolar is an Axis I disorder. Insurance companies will usually cover the treatment of Axis I disorders, but they don't always cover the treatment of Axis II disorders. Schizophrenia is sometimes diagnosed as bipolar for the same reason.

Besides, bipolar is the diagnosis du jour at the moment, anyway.

can you have rapid cycling with BPD?

Yep. I think it may be called something else in the DSM, but it amounts to the same thing.

ETA: BPD's known for its comorbidity, anyway. It often occurs with other Axis II disorders and/or with Axis I disorders. A tricky bastard, it is.

If a person is suicidal, then yes they would be committed. If they have made cuttings that are of the critical nature (versus the attention getting or tension release type), then yes they are committed. You have to have grounds to commit in any state (I ran involuntary psych units for years) so basically you can admit someone for 72 hours to observe and go from there. But with BPD's with history (and this one clearly has history), they try to keep them OUT of the hospital since it just feeds into the diagnosis and rewards them - and they usually decomp in a hospital setting. Only way they would admit her is if she was off her psych meds and her Bipolar was out of control (and either danger to self or others, or grounds called gravely disabled/can't take care of their basic needs).

And that's the 2cp psych lesson of the day...lol.

I swear this thread is like a car accident - you just HAVE to look. Actually any thread she has posted is like that - lessons of futility and wasted breath.
