The excerpt is about a stretch of two-lane road just SOUTH of Alexandria. It was the funnel point for ALL traffic between north Louisiana and the Lafayette, Baton Rouge, and New Orleans areas in south Louisiana.
The small traffic circle vanished during the I-49 work. The large one, on the southern end of MacArthur Drive, is still around--so to speak.
The only major e-w street I can think of in Alex is Jackson Street although the person might have had Lee Street in mind.
