Doctor Hmmmmm

I'm in remission. SCI has jumped to 4. Thank you whoever. I know it shouldn't matter, but it does :)

Oh please. I'm no doctor. not a real one. But if this thread has helped, that's all that matters.

You definitely do enjoy appreciative readership, and if you have that, I think the number that supposedly represents the quality would be like, the least important marker to gauge the success of your work.

Those scores, those numbers - they have an allure, for sure. But from what I've personally experienced, and from what I've read, those scores, those numbers, are really not reliable. Or minimally so.

So what is?

I got no idea!

Really, no idea. At all. Whatsoever. Just try this, try that. See what happens. Eh?

I'll add here, that I was thinking the only gauge you have is yourself. But even that isn't reliable, either way. Because I just remembered that it's often happened, that if I post two pieces of poetry, and I'm very pleased with one, and the other I'd tell anyone I think is so-so, if they get mentioned or commented upon, the one I thought was pretty good gets the so-so response and the one I considered so-so receives the more laudatory commentary. Just about every time.

So... what do you do? How do you know? Just go ahead and type a bunch of LOL's, and enjoy the day. Hypocritical? Sure. But it's something, maybe the only real thing to aim for?

How about an incest story in which bro and sis marry, and sis becomes the slut loving wife who then... what?

...cuckolds her wimp brother/husband, obviously!

Of course, you could also make them half-siblings of different racial backgrounds and trip all the triggers at once.

:D

Just as long as they use condoms. Don't want to fluff up the medical militant moralists/literalists.

Seems like these discussions end up more appropriate for the Story Ideas section, which I've sometimes thought about, but never really ventured. Could be fun? Informative?

There was a how to story written...I think it was by Sack though I can't find it in his story list. It really was a well written how to on how to get more comments on your stories. The biggest thing is to get your name out there, write comments, read other's works, sign your comments, good or bad. When people see a comment on their story, they'll recognize your name on your stories and return the favor.

Don't be afraid to ask the person that comments on yours what they liked or hated...or what struck them about the story. It's a way to grow with your work and let the commentor know he's been heard. That's another way to get your name known and allow for readers to know that their opinions count.

I hope this helps. We ALL get those comments. Sometimes it's just fun to leave them up and let those that do enjoy your work to comment on the comment. Just realize that your reader usually has a reason for writing the things he or she does. Sometimes they may seem stupid to you but they do mean something to the commentor.

Good luck!

It would be nice if everyone that left a comment wasn't anonymous. I just posted my first and you were gracious enough to give me your opinion. If someone didn't like something or think it could be done in a different way, I'd rather someone tell me, or leave their name so I can ask them.

Or maybe they don't want to be asked?

A Suggestion To Improve Comments

I'm a "problem solver" in real life. I work with computers and systems, and always look for systems as solutions, so...

Literotica runs contests for authors. Why not contests for readers, for most comments and most votes cast? You want to encourage votes, and useful, non-anonymous comments, and this would be one way to do that, because an anonymous reader obviously couldn't win.

You could have various rules... such as the fact that one reader's average score, for all stories, must be in a certain range, so they can't be all happy, giving every story a 5, nor a totally evil scum, giving every story a 0. To qualify, the reader must cast a certain number of votes and leave a certain number of comments, either in a particular genre or across all genres.

In the simplest contest, the winning reader is whoever casts the most votes that are close to the final average score for each story (e.g. they voted a score of 4 for a story that finished between 3.5 and 4.5).

For comments... and here's the part I really like... authors (and maybe readers, too) could vote on and comment on the quality of the comments!

[I would love to be able to respond to posted comments... NOT to argue with them or flame back, but for the useful comments I see, telling them that I value their opinion, good or bad.]

With the votes on the quality of the comments, you award the reader prize. The prize could be cash, but maybe a better prize would be something I've done frequently for my editors... give them a custom story, written around whatever parameters they supply and by a volunteer author of their choice.

Non-anonymous comments would help make readers tailor their comments more kindly... although even a registered user really is still anonymous, and could flame away. But this method encourages non-anonymous comments to which an author can at least reply.

It would also be very interesting to see what a story's score would be if you only considered "serious" votes, that is, votes from people that qualify for the reader's contests.

I do have some other ideas, but I'd like to see what people say about this one, first.

Sound like good ideas--encouraging reader participation while still leaving it to their discretion whether they want to react to a story at all.

HOWEVER, it doesn't really matter what the forum readers think--the only ones who matter are the Web site administrators, and they haven't shown much inclination to work with suggestions from the forum.

The publishing process here drives me insane. I submitted a story about 5 days ago, it really doesn't require any editing. Two days ago, the page that lists my submissions is listing a submission date of 5/31 for the story, status is still pending. WTF? Do they really queue it up for a release date?

You'd have to PM Laurel to be certain of anything about the system. As a rule they don't seem to actually edit anything just check for content, grammar etc.

Apparently so--because there are so many story entries and only so much time for the editors to process stories. They limit the number of stories they post, and if they want some time off, they process and list ahead. The alternative is taking the time off they need and not posting anything that day. Given the choice, I'm sure you're good with waiting in the gueue for your turn with the rest of us.

That's always been my experience. I don't pretend to understand what goes on behind the scenes, but it seems to work pretty consistently.....Carney

self-appointed lab rat

For what it's worth:

I notice that if I've been in the writing mind I don't care to read, and I can get more into the reading if I'm not working on something written.
The last couple days has been the latter. And I found out something. The stories that seemed to most intrigue me I forgot to vote on. It was afterwards, I'd go, "oops, I forgot to vote! Sorry!"

So: firsthand proof that just because someone doesn't vote on your work doesn't mean they haven't been uplifted. So to speak. In fact they may not have voted because of it.

Okay, back to deciding what to do.
