News & Views: Discussion and Announcements for the Survivorphile

All the behind-the-scenes work is done by Laurel and Manu. Maybe they went on their Spring Break. :D

Seriously, don't worry. Everything should get back to normal over the next few days.

Starting March 25 there is a contest going on. Contest submissions always get preference in posting. I don't know why things were slow before then. I had one story take eight days instead of the three or four that had been taking up until then.

I thought you would all like to know that this year's Survivor has broken the 1000 submissions barrier today, about half of which having come from velvetpie, Sexxy Vixen and Goldeniangel. Congratulations, everyone! :rose:

Just those three combined have over 1,000. The rest of us, combined, have about 800.

Stupid question, if part of a chain story was put in another category, does it still count as a chain? Not my part, but someone else's.

If a story is posted under "Chain Stories", it's a chain story. If it isn't posted under "Chain Stories", it isn't.

If there are 3 stories in a chain, and 2 people choose to move the stories to other categories, it's possible that Laurel will move the remaining one out of the category as well, because there are no chains of one (or even of two).

It is my understanding that we are allowed to use stories/poems in illustrated that use illustrations created by another person, so long as we have their permission. If this is so, could someone update this on the rules thread:) That way those starting out but not checking the constant chatter of this thread will know (and I won't keep forgetting:))

Thanks.

No, that's not exactly true. According to Literotica.com's submission guidelines, all art within the story, like the story itself, must be your original work. The editors of Literotica.com are sometimes lenient with public domain images, or in cases where the legitimate copyright owners express their permission, but the specific Survivor rule for illustrated images is:

All illustrated stories must be 750 words or more to be eligible for the contest. There is no minimum length for poetry submissions. All submissions, including the illustrations, must be original work of the entrant, i.e. photographs taken, or drawings or paintings created by the entrant.

We (with Laurel's accord) decided to allow drawings or photographs taken portraying the contestant, as long as they're not professional work:

The use of images in the production of which the contestant was not directly involved, either by creating or by being portrayed in them, will make submissions in the "Illustrated" and "Illustrated Poetry" categories ineligible for points in Survivor.

That means that you can use photographs that you yourself took or that were taken of you, or paintings or drawings that you yourself created.

It also means that you cannot use images that are royalty-free, public domain, or owned by someone other than you, even if under permission.

What is the Point of the so-called "Survivor Contest."

 I'm still trying to figure out what the point of this contest is. I just don't see much participation, discussion, etc. Maybe I just don't get it, but it just seems so futile! Am I missing something??????? Love you all, Dottie.

Dottie-

The point of Survivor is to explore your limits as an author and write in as many different categories as possible. There have been over of 1500 stories and poems posted this year already by Survivor contestants, so the participation level is very high.

Did you read the welcome message we sent you when you signed up, and did you explore the other threads on Survivor's forum?

As some of you may or not have noticed, we are now in July, which means we crossed the half-way point in Survivor. :D

So far it has been a success, with 74 registered contestants and close to 2000 stories and poems submitted, a considerable percentage of which having won monthly and special competitions at Lit already.

Here is the scoreboard that includes all submissions made up to June 30. It isn't completely updated, because some of you haven't updated your scorecards yet, but it is for the most part. The ones that aren't updated wouldn't have any interference on the top 15, anyway.

Congratulations for a job well done, and keep it up! :rose:

I'm sure it's been asked to death, but I have a question about illustrated work. If someone else took a picture of me and I then modified/enhanced the pic, can I use it in an illustrated poem/story?

Thanks!

Yes, that's fine. :)

732 Today!

Just posting this to dedicate my accomplishment in part to my dear friend, Elizabetht and to celebrate surpassing jthserra's score of 730 from last year!

Thanks to everyone for your continued support!

Please, for the love of all things sacred, can't we find a way to make the quantity have a little quality to it. I refuse to single any one person out, some did produce a lot of stories that were on the whole really good.

Can't we make the stories have a minimum of something simple like a three point rating after say a month of being posted. I know there will be disputes over this but anyone can type the minimum words per story and submit them. Hell I could do one a day at that rate. Most people could.

Hi... wondering, maybe, for next year in 2006 if you run this contest again... since 2005 only has a few months left in it... if this might be a possibility? (pulled this quote from another Survivor thread) Might be a more ... fair?... way to score?

Hi, Selena-

I have to answer the same way I did the first time when Master_Vassago posted that:

There is no way of keeping score in a system based in the ratings of the story. H's are transient, here today and gone tomorrow, and there is no way for anyone to keep track of the ratings of all the stories and poems posted at the site at all times. It is debatable on whether a score based on a flawed voting system would be more fair than what we have now, but even if it were, it is quite simply impossible to keep track.

I just looked at the scorecard of Missteez. She is currently in fourth place but the scorecard shows nothing but four immunities. Her index also shows nothing posted. Has she dropped out of the contest? Is she still officially in the competition but not going to post anything more? If it's the latter, I will make an effort to pass her current score.

That's strange. She didn't say anything, but with all her stories and poems having disappeared, it means only the immunities stand and she's back at 8 points. I hope all is well with her.

You can still make the effort, though. Who knows if there won't be someone coming from behind with a hundred stories in a row. lol.

You're right. That's pretty much what Missteez did a while ago. Apparently msboy also dropped out. I will keep on submitting stories because some of those behind me are on the verge of getting bonus points from filling in more categories.

It's the end of Survivor 2005, and every participant deserves to be congratulated. It was a great year! Now, remember to update your ScoreCards before midnight PST on January 4th. Double check everything! If you forget to add a submission to the scorecard, or if you forget to signal an immunity you had won and claimed, those points will be lost.

Winners will be announced on or shortly after the 5th.
