Democracy Inaction
Democracy has its down sides... We were very pleased with ourselves for facilitating democratic elections in Palestine but utterly flummoxed when the people voted Hammas into power. The problem with a democracy is that sometimes the idiots outnumber the smart people and then it becomes a game of influence, which is really a game of money. Supposedly, that was the purpose of the Electoral College.
The bill that produced this new Lit policy was a replacement for one that had been found unconstitutional by the supreme court. That bill, like this one, had broad bi-partisan support. I think this is very important to understand.
While this administration has made more than its share of blunders, our previous administration gave birth to the Telecom act which, in my opinion, has yet to reveal just how harmful to free speech it will be. We may never know the full extent of its harm because it is hard to gauge what doesn't happen.
So, the question I always ask is "What do we do?" I think I'll be making a donation to the ACLU for starters, and writing to my elected officials about the problems this new law has produced for this community. If we don't stand up for ourselves, nobody will.
