Punk rock, Hardcore, Oi!, Garage, Metal, Ska, Indie, Power Pop, Northern Soul (and whatever else) Discussion and Anarchy thread

44 years ago today.

November 16, 1981, Black Flag released damaged. I was never a huge BF fan, but this album really sums up my early teenage years.

Hardcore was what we had instead of happy childhoods.

Also… 46 years ago today…

The Jam released their fourth studio album, Setting Sons, November 16, 1979.

Best songs IMO:

48 years ago today…

The Jam released This Is the Modern World on November 18, 1977.

This was the first album by them that I ever bought, so it’s still one of my favorites.

Just heard this sad news. Man do I love squeeeze. They may not be punk rock, but they are a fine band.

Few people wrote better songs than Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook

Seen them several times live. One of the best, consistently great live bands out there, IMO.

RIP, sir…

Classic era Squeeze drummer Gilson Lavis died earlier this month at age 74. He joined the band in 1975 and played on all of the band’s first 10 albums, released from 1978 to 1991.

“I’m very sad to report that Gilson Lavis, my dear friend and long-standing drummer, passed away at his home in Lincolnshire last night,” Holland said on Nov. 6. “On behalf of my Orchestra, Squeeze, the many musicians who have worked with and befriended Gilson over the years and all the people he has supported through the AA fellowship, I send our love and sympathy to Nikki and Gilson, his dear wife and son.”

Soberaphobia is such an underrated record! Del really had a very different guitar sound the most punk bands then

Every second counts

Alcohol

Keys to the city

Altho that live version above is fucking awesome, I do also appreciate the studio version!

Of course, this was not my first exposure to Peter and the test tube babies.

The first song I heard by them was on a compilation called. The kids are united, it is essentially the first Oi! album. I don’t know if it was licensed differently and there are a few different tracks.

But this is the first one I heard…

Rob a bank

Then the “there is no future” compilation on no future records. My version was on an orange/pink vinyl.

Moped lads

Great live version

And of course the peel sessions version which was also very good.

Dubbed "Punk Jazz" by critics at the time, I believe this band inspired the theme for South Park

Contort Yourself - The Contortions

From the daily song challenge thread… here the US, the night before Thanksgiving is commonly when you get together with old friends

Day 26 - A song about getting together with old friends

Depending on the friends…

The Chats - Drunk n Disorderly

I like both versions… what the original will be one of my favorites for forever

Man, the Saints are such a good fuckin band.

They are me to a tee.

Nihilistic.

Posted this on the music challenge thread to oppose the theme of shopping.

Day 28 - A song about shopping

I got no use for shopping, Black Friday deals, Amazon and “stuff” in general.

Said advertising, you're lying
You're never gonna give me what I want
I said smooth talking, brain washing
You're never gonna get me what I need

The Saints - Know Your Product

I know this isn’t a ‘song association’ thread as such but this immediately came to mind.

If you ever get to see Richard Jobson do this live, he has a real laugh about how most people don’t believe it’s their song!

This thread is whatever you want it to be!

This is a great song. Post whatever you’d like. And if a song take you ona tangent… go with it!

Wife and I seeing The Effigies tonite in Philly. I saw them one time maybe in 84 or 85.

I don’t know why, but at the time they never really struck a cord with me. Pun intended.

Now listen to them and wonder what the fuck I was missing back then. Meeting a good friend of mine who grew up in Chicago and is friends with the band.
