Reading Books For Pleasure

Any good, but not too heavy NON fiction?
I try to read 5-10 non fiction books a year. Not my wheelhouse, which is why I push myself.

Thanks in advance.
Shadow and Shelter: The Swamp in Southern Culture

I read this book years ago for a class I was taking. At first I was all like, "Why did it have to be swamps??" However, it was a very interesting look at how culture and social mores guided perspectives of all groups settling and living in the South pre-Civil War (and beyond), and the author explores the Swamp's perseverance in an ever-changing eco-culture.

I added the Amazon link up top, but I found it in my local library.

Happy reading! Whatever you choose.

Wait no more.

Thanks! Who says wishes don't come true?!

"I hate swamps, Jock! I hate 'em!!"

Thank you, all!

What are you reading this summer?

I've actually stepped away from non-fiction for a little bit.
Going through and reading the Dune series before the movie comes out. I've read all of the prequels but not the actual series so I figured it was time to get it in.

I read Dune, but not the prequels.
My dad was a fan. Most of my nerdy guy friends are fans. I am not. Which is strange because once people find out I’m a LOTR fan they push Dune.
My dad made me read it when I was a kid.

To each their own. I have long been the only non-Harry Potter fan in my circle of friends/acquaintances.

I couldn't read Dune and did not enjoy the movie either. My ex was "all about it" as they say.

Red Sister by Mark Lawrence 4/5 Love this epic fantasy and will be reading more in the series.

Blood Magic by Tessa Gratton 3/5 This one felt like a very teen read so I'll wait a bit to see if I am compelled to read more or not. It was okay but certainly not a great read for me.

Thanks!

I'm currently reading Victim 2117 – the 8th novel in the Department Q-series by Jussi Adler-Olsen. It's a Danish writer, who's books are popular in several countries, and have been translated into several languages

The Psychopath TestBook by Jon Ronson was a good one for me.

Also liked So You've Been Publicly Shamed by him as well.

Of course The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacksby Rebecca Skloot

Really enjoyed The Poisoner's HandbookBook by Deborah Blum

Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting by in Americaby Barbara Ehrenreich was a good and interesting one for me.

We Set the Dark on Fire (We Set the Dark on Fire, #1) by Tehlor Kay Mejia 4/5 YA Didn't love this one at first. Won me over and now I want more. Fortunately there is a second book. Yesss!

The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry 4/5 Juvenile Fiction, Just as lovely as I remembered.

SOUL: A Chef's Culinary Evolution in 150 Recipes by Todd Richards 3/5 There was one recipe I wanted to look at, peaches on pimento toast. WTF?!? Might try it.

The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster 2/5 Juvenile Fiction, Little preachy IMO and hated the art.

Revenge and the Wild by Michelle Modesto 5/5 YA, LOVED and to date, there ISN'T another one, noooooo!

More nonfition I have enjoyed:

The Short Bus: A Journey Beyond Normal by Jonathan Mooney

Gang Leader for a Day: A Rogue Sociologist Takes to the Streets by Sudhir Venkatesh

A Path Appears: Transforming Lives, Creating Opportunity by Nicholas Kristof, Sheryl WuDun

Botany of Desire: a Plants Eye View of the World by Michael Pollen

I'm simultaneously reading;

Jim Butcher, Fool Moon
Jennifer Roberson, Sword Dancer
Tanya Huff, Blood Ties
BurntRedstone (from Lit), Jack's New Position

All re-reads for me. All light fantasy stuff. A wizard. Sword and sorcery. Vampire. And... I don't know... Duke Nukem? ***shrug***

Oh, and writing a novel for the summer contest coming up in a month or so. (Hence the need for fucking LIGHT when I take a break from pounding my wine soaked head against the keyboard.)

A Domme that does not read is a Domme I don't want to serve! :p

Currently reading some Nietzsche and thinking about going through some Camus afterwards

I’m kidding, but is it required reading?

Talk to us about Fat Vampire.

The concept is that Vampires have been making themselves faster and more beautiful pre - embrace. They have an application and training program but one night a fat man gets embraced and it turns out he is smarter and has more ability than most anyone else.

These books are more like novellas at 200 pages or so but so much fun! As the fat vampire comes into his own and saves his maker, love and so on. LOVE! Will continue to read!

Talk to us about Fat Vampire.

‘Beer it scareth men from thee, it sendeth thy soul to perdition. Thou art like a broken steering-oar in a ship, that is obedient on neither side.’
