Runners unite?

I'm now two weeks into my marathon training plan, and I'm on track (e.g. 14 mile run today). I'm also getting used to the hydration tablets and gel packs that I'll need for the longer distance.

I agree completely. I find it mind boggling that all advice is to not go more than 10%; yet, every training plan only goes to 20 for a marathon.

I haven't done one yet, shooting for next year, but I plan on training up to at least 28 before I run one.
Good luck! I'm not sure that I'll make to 28 miles during training, but if I get to 20 miles on a run then I'll be very tempted to stretch it to 24 or 26 miles.

Bump! (and an update to the above)

I've now run 20+ miles on three occasions during my marathon training, including a 22 mile run last Sunday. I was advised not to go up to the full distance on the basis that extra miles above 20 aren't productive to training and require longer recovery periods. I'm tapering down now as the marathon (my first... gulp!) is in less than three weeks time.

Best wishes to all other runners, whatever your current goals! :)

Training plan completed! First-ever marathon on Sunday. Time only left to cross my fingers and hope for the best.

I've just completed my first-ever marathon at the tender age of fifty! :nana::nana::nana:

I'm pleased to report that I appear to be uninjured, apart from a blister on one instep (fortunately still intact), a bloodied toe (from repeated pounding of a toenail against my shoe), and some chafing around sensitive parts.

What's happened to the other runners on Lit? I'm not convinced that this thread is best served by me just trying unite with myself.

Good work. I finished my first Olympic dist triathlon 2 weeks ago. Got a 10 k this weekend and have decided to do my second marathon next year. My first marathon I chose a training program too aggressive and injured knee and hip. So I gotta take it easy. Gonna spend the fall/winter with lifting and core work in gym. Then interval bike for leg strength and cardio training so I can start the spring off like a beast

Good work.
Thanks! :D

I'm very impressed! I can run, but I'm hopeless at swimming and cycling -- and you've done the Olympic distances as well, which are truly arduous. Well done! :)

Sounds like a good plan. Good luck with the 10k race. :)

Congrats on finishing your marathon!! It is a great accomplishment!!

I have done 2 myself and hit the wall at about 20 miles both times. Did much better the second time though, I was much more prepared. There might be another one in my future but it wouldn't be until next year at the earliest.

Keep up the running!

Thanks! It feels like one. :)

My experience was the same. I went well up to 18 miles, but I was starting to struggle as I passed the 20 mile mark. Those last few miles are really difficult! I made it through to the end, though. It was an amazing feeling finally to approach the finishing line. :D

Keep up the running!
Will do! I think I deserve to rest for a few days, though. ;)

Ran a 12K this weekend for the first time in five months. I'm so out of shape from where I was two years ago. I don't even want to know my time! lol

It all counts! Even if you're a bit out of shape, 12km is far enough that you'll have been fully into aerobic respiration, so it will have done you a lot of good. :)

I really do wish I could run I think I would get into it once I was conditioned... Only it would involved like 12 sports bras and some Duct Tape... or free entertainment and two black eyes

Think of the entertainment value of the onlookers. Sometimes you just do things for others. Haha

Nice job! I did my 3rd marathon Sunday and got a PR. Felt very strong and didn't break stride the whole race! Got another in January!

I've been doing a lot of trail running all summer. Now the trails are a little muddy and slick from all the leaves falling off trees. Might have to move to pavement

I'm starting to pick up my running again now that a month has elapsed since my first marathon (did I just say "first" as if there might be more than one? *gulps*). I competed in a 5 mile cross country race yesterday, but I still found myself a bit sluggish there, so I've just done a 4 mile run with an emphasis on picking up my pace.

It's taking me a while to recover my speed, but I now have some definite signs that it's happening. :)

I PR'd a 10 k in the beginning of October but seem to have gotten some Plantar fasciitis. Anybody out there for a good cure/stretch routine for that. I think I need to run at the beginning of my day, not the end, because I have been getting a lot of issues related to tight muscles

Any thoughts?

Those are words that I dread. In the experience of the runners that I know, that implies the need for a long layoff (several months, maybe a year). I suggest that you start by getting a proper assessment from a qualified professional. I believe that there are a few other conditions that manifest similarly but aren't as severe. I don't want to offer any suggestions on treatment in case they turn out to be inappropriate for yours.

I wish you all the best, though, for a quick recovery. If the problem really is tight muscles then a sports therapist ought to be able to get you up and running properly again within a few weeks. :)

I just never had any feet issues till a couple months ago. I thought it was just a deep bruise on my heel and it got bad quickly. Sucks getting old and trying to stay healthy.

Thanks!
