That may be partly due to lack of experience: if you're not confident of running the full distance then one tends to try to do the first bit faster in order to "get there quicker".Half my battle is trying to keep my pace down so I don't burn out too quickly.
One tip is to practise running for time rather than distance: set your mind to run for, say, one hour and then stop, rather than aiming to cover X miles. That gets you out of the mindset of hurrying along in order to finish.
Ideally, you'd also find someone to run with at your target pace. That way, you can delegate the job of worrying about distance versus time, and let your mind relax.
