sex in your writing: protected or unprotected?

I never use condoms in my stories simply because they are fantasy not real life. If there was a specific reason for having them in the story I'd add them but other wise they are just not mentioned.

It seems like everyone has almost the same opinion. I have read many stories that include condoms and the majority of the time, it is really distracting. It's fantasy, not real life. When the condom(s) have an impact on the plot it's fine, but other wise I wouldn't include them.

This may be a weird question, but when you are writing a sex scene, do you mention putting on a condom or just keep it out of your writing for fear it will break the mood?

I mention the condom when it's an integral part of the story, or necessary for a future reference. The condom becomes integral in preventing the wearer's sperm from fertilizing the woman's eggs.

When the condom is not a part of the story, I don't mention it. Some of my writing is impregnation-related, so condoms would get in the way, and I prefer stories of unprotected sex, anyway.

Depends on the character....

I prefer unprotected, but in my Rose Byrne stories the main character makes a point of using condoms. It just seems to fit with her slightly sexually conservative demeanor.

To me worrying about condom use in erotica is like worrying about how those characters in sitcoms afford giant Manhattan apartments while working in coffee shops. It might be unrealistic, but it's not central to the story for me.

That comparison really made me chuckle! A good point, too.

I agree with the consensus - in real life we have to worry about condoms, but I don't think anyone would say that they prefer it that way. It's a fact of life. In our stories we have the luxury of not worrying about facts of life! ;)

Also, I personally find the risk of impregnation more than titillating. The idea of two strangers being overcome with lust to the point that they'd abandon caution to the wind and just fuck like animals is incredibly erotic. It's something I never experience in real life because I'm too sensible (at least nowadays - I did do some stupid things in the past!) so a lit story is really the perfect place to scratch that itch.

I haven't written any scenes with a condom as most of the time in my stories the characters are too caught up in what they're doing to bother with precautions(and in my fantasy world, the only danger of unprotected sex is a possible pregnancy)

That said, I have mentioned them in a story or two. Both to add to the taboo nature of what's going on but also because to not mention it seems unrealistic to me. If a character has never had unprotected sex before it will feel different/register different mentally and I think that can be worth making note of.

most of the time in all my stories i don't protect sex
and write about sex in freely
and my readers enjoy that lot

Agree with most people and usually it is unprotected sex. Pulling off a condom for the "money shot" just takes away from the flow of the story many times.

In my first chapter of my Dreams story the girl has protected sex with 3 strangers and I almost left it out because it did seem to break the flow. In the end, when she sucked them off I had her refuse the condom because of the taste of lubricant and such not being enjoyable. I've also used the "sex with dominant stranger" routine of them putting on a condom, but when she turns around, he has taken it off and does her bare back.

As what others mentioned, it mostly depends on the story...well written it does not detract if it is planned; however, the time taken to look for a condom, put it on, and then get back into the mood detracts from the typical fantasy of a story...although that gives me an idea of a humorous story based around that...hmmm....

I cannot think of a more effective way to dampen a sexy scene than have the male character roll on a condom. Real cold shower stuff we're talking here. And the sexy bits are of course when the male inseminates the female. Especially when there's a risk of pregnancy!

As someone has already pointed out, those stories are for titillation, not educational purposes. And they needn't get pregnant or catch an STD, unless the author wants them to

My stories are usually always unprotected. For the sake of the mood and the fact that all my characters are STD free, I usually don't need it. The stories usually stop after the first one, so there's never any mention of anyone getting pregnant.

When the two leads finally do end up having sex in my current story, I made it a point to mention a condom and then also the pill. It's not that I wanted to preach or add a point by any means at all, I just wanted to make the build-up and that moment that much more realistic.

Having to ask whether you've got a condom or have something else is always a part of that moment, so I tosssed it in. But of course, after I revealed the female lead was on the pill, I didn't mention it again.

I generally try to make my stories seem realistic, but the use of condoms, pregnancy, and disease never come into play in the story. In real life, I use condoms all the time and I'm very concerned with pregnancy and disease, but in my fiction, there's no place for safe sex, at least not in any of my stories so far.

Gay Sex

I could think her safekeeping on my hips, and then my pants dropped to the connexion, presently followed by my shirt. We stepped in to cleanse and I rubbed her side with squander gel. My safekeeping moved to her front to cup her breasts and I started massaging them with the cascade gel. All mellow she lay against my tummy piece I slid my hands towards her vulva. With my fingers I page her pussy lips to knead her button. She parted her legs several solon. During our kissing I massaged her to a juncture.
GAY SEX

depends

...On the story, bareback can add a level of eroticism. Analogous to mentioning putting on a seatbelt when driving a car... Sometimes saying less is more.

I think it depends very much upon the context.

If the story involves stupid people who don't care about each other except for the sex, they probably won't worry about disease or pregnancy.

If it's about thinking people who do care, they'll worry.

If one of them cares and the other doesn't, they can have a fight---which can be an important part of the story.

And, of course, there are always thinking, caring people who just fuck up and fuck unprotected.

If you feel the need to mention protection every time your characters fuck, I presume you always mention them brushing their teeth before and visiting the toilet after as well. Your characters are doing a lot of things that don't need to be mentioned everytime they do it.

You make a good point on that. Some details are just unnecessary. Putting on protection would just slow most stories down and really doesn't add any excitement.

My stories are very much rooted in the real world with real characters, so the use of a condom, if called for, is something that is typically going to appear, and it makes both the story and the characters more believable. I don't think it has to break the narrative flow at all: it's just something that is part of the story and the encounter those characters are having.

Although, if I have a continuing couple with a continuing sexual relationship I might mention the use of condoms in their first encounter or two, and then let that simply be assumed by the reader in future encounters.

Sex in my writing is never protected and there are no sexual diseases. Of course my writing is fantasy and not reality. I don't think I've read more than a handful of stories of the thousands that I've read that had safe sex in them.

Oddly enough, I've seen readers gawk at scenes with first encounters that omitted condoms. Granted these were erotic romance readers, but I found it interesting. When I asked (on another forum) they agreed that they liked a quick mention of precautions at one point in the story. Just one passing line seemed to suffice. I've put them in and left them out. But when I have mentioned condoms, it's become part of the scene in a seemless way.

See, what fetishists have known for a long time is that stories of all kinds can hold sexual appeal for all kinds of people.

When I write erotic fiction I try to cover a lot of bases. It'd be an amazing thing to write a short story that blew everyone's skirt up. The golden goose of erotic fiction! Probably not gonna happen though.

Now that I've submitted my first story that I'm sure will be accepted, I write for different reasons. It's like singing karaoke. Everyone can sing karaoke, and most people can exercise self-indulgence while doing so. But after a while you learn (as I have) that if you sing something that everyone can enjoy (something you can actually sing without driving all the local dogs insane) then you get more enjoyment out of it. You only get what you give.

Condoms can be sexy; it's true! Think of them as a little latex fetish suit for your dick. Or a stocking for your pecker. Whatever! My current pending submission (knock on wood, pun intended) does not contain a condom, but part two probably will. If you can't have an open mind about something as benign as a rubber, you probably shouldn't be writing stories for other people to read.

But yeah, there's a lot of merit in leaving them out of erotic fiction (not like your story is going to have a baby). If you feel irresponsible because your characters are promoting unsafe sex, well, kudos I suppose. But we're all adults here, right?

Right?

Freedom!

edit: Oh, and one more thing. If you're going to use protection in your stories, and you're dropping brand names PLEASE do not use Troj@n or Life$tyles. DUR3X all the way! Reason: they don't break.
