So I've Been Looking Into It, And I Think I Am Gor

I wouldn't call myself a "fan" but I did my time in sunday school. Unlike the Gor series, it's the basis or at least shows up in most of the western civilization canon. It's also been around for just a bit longer, and is ever so slightly more popular.

I'm totally getting into the Good Book. Parts of it are fucking perverse.

I read the New Testament in college, and found the tone almost...funny. I don't mean that in an insulting way. It's just that the tone is so different from the Old Testament! It was really striking to me.

Oh my god - stop talking about my phone like that!

I missed the Picard maneuver reference. I think. Did I?

Does Harry Potter really qualify me as a nerd?

I've just started to get into Torchwood - does that help? The man on man action in that show has nothing to do with it either. Noooo, I'm really into temporal rifts or whatever. Uh huh.

In her hands, it ceased to be a mere phone and became a sextoy for public display of geeklust.

And you are a nerd. Deal. Admittedly, you're a cute nerd with social skills and a life, but still a nerd.

*pets phone lovingly* it's okay baby. He won't hurt you.

Hullo, I wanna be a nerd, but I don't feel worthy. Sniff, sniff. Am I worthy, Nerd Homburg?

Hey now, I didn't touch you phone. It was all hot girl-on-phone action.

You are worthy. Such a good nerdgrrl, you are.

Hey Hey Hey. I think that's for The Nerd Queen to decide.

Ahem.

Did you have something you wanted to ask me, ITW? :D

Yes, my Queen. Does Harry Potter count towards qualification for nerdliness?

Generally, I would say no. Only because the mass media usually devalues the nerd factor of such greats like Warlord comics, Atari, and Rubik's cubes...now even so-called 'normal' people like them.

But, since nerd essentials such as The Legend of Zelda, Star Wars, and yes, even your Harry Potter has reached such critical acclaim, even I cannot deny my people the chance to enjoy the same geekirific delights just because the preps have claimed them as their own.

Yes, my child. You, too...can be nerd.

The specifics are simple. You must be able to recite at least ONE cliche Shakespeare passage, know how to spell deoxyribonucleic acid correctly (out loud), write in l337 speak fluently, regularly download and know what Torrents are, have Nero Image Maker illegally copied onto your hard drive, hand build your own computer, and own at LEAST 4 gaming consoles, NOT including the PC.

(just remember your leaky fountain pen and collection of rare pressed butterflies)

Ummm, I can recite several Shakespeare passages! There is no way in hell there will be 4 gaming consoles in my house ever. Ahem, Your Majesty.

Promise to go google search Torrents ...

You know, I always figured I wouldn't end up with a guy who plays video games, but date a man in his 30s or therabouts and some interest in video games comes with the package. I think the forty somethings are a mixed bag, but by gen x, every boy played video games. Am I right?

I'll say...yes, pretty much. It's kind of like the coloring-book-and-crayons of years past. It's a good way to keep your kids entertained and quiet while the big people do important stuff.

At work (Red Lobster. Yay. ) I see a lot of hand held video games and portable DVD players to keep the kids quiet.

The New Testament is still about 1000 pages away. I'm still on Exodus.

So far, Genesis was far more perverse.

Shakespeare cliché? How many do you need? I got lots.

Spelling deoxyribonucleic acid out loud? Sure thing.

Write in l337, sorry NOT. As an English nerd, it's offensive and stupid.

Torrents? Gotcha!

Nero Image Maker? Natch. I have Manga Studio Pro, thanks.

4 gaming consoles? I only have two with me at this house.

Hand build my own computer? Nope, too busy hand building my own manga and using movie software to play with anime.

Also firmly in the nerd column, I have: a love of Trek, Tolkien and the Roman Empire; I named one of my cats Zelda, I'm on a first name basis with the owners of all three indy bookstores in my neighborhood, doing math relaxes me....

Oh, and I've read about a third of the Gor novels so that I can go into Gor RP chatrooms and annoy the Weal Twue Goreans with comments like "That's not in the books!" and "How come you don't spell Earth the way John Norman did?". Even at 9 books out of the 25, I've still read more than most of the gamers in IRC.

Do I pass?

Scuse me? I have dice older than you, chica. Don't make me get all sorts of Martin Luther Protestant Reform Nerd on you.

Puh-leeze. Only those BORN into Nerdom royalty get to tell ME how nerdy I am. My dad played D&D before I was BORN. He got a NES with The Legend of Zelda when I was -2-.

He's got every season of Stargate SG-I on DVD. He watches at least 2 episodes of various Star Trek shows every day!

He IS the nerd King!

I wanna be a nerd! I wanna be a nerd!

I collected Sojourn comics and played D&D, go to Renn faires and comic conventions. I also spent last weekend standing outside without a coat on waiting for the Star Wars exhibit at the Franklin Institute to open... correcting the people who didnt know who Janga and Boba Fett were...

I've also read and re-read Harry Potter. I read the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings before they were movies, same with the Chronicles of Narnia.

Does that count?

NES when you were 2? Cub. Nerd Princess, maybe. Does your dad still have his Vic 20? Or TI 99-4a with that mighty 4K of RAM? I don't have a Timex Sinclair, but I helped a friend build one. Forget dice older than you, I've got consoles older than you.

And hand-built computers? Come back and talk to me when you've etched your own circuit boards and built solid-state shit with a soldering iron.

(God, how I wish that I parlayed my rampant technical geekery as a child into a worthwhile tech sector job as an adult. Though it can be argued that "worthwhile" and "tech sector" don't really go together any more. And, yes, I still have my Vic 20, TI 99-4a, and two Atari 2600's in storage.)

Oy. I don't parent like that. Sorry - judgmental bitch talking - but hell no there are never video games or tv at dinner, out or in.
