So I've Been Looking Into It, And I Think I Am Gor

(God, how I wish that I parlayed my rampant technical geekery as a child into a worthwhile tech sector job as an adult. Though it can be argued that "worthwhile" and "tech sector" don't really go together any more. And, yes, I still have my Vic 20, TI 99-4a, and two Atari 2600's in storage.)

I'm continually shocked by how many IT people there are around here. <shrug>

I wanna be a nerd! I wanna be a nerd!

I collected Sojourn comics and played D&D, go to Renn faires and comic conventions. I also spent last weekend standing outside without a coat on waiting for the Star Wars exhibit at the Franklin Institute to open... correcting the people who didnt know who Janga and Boba Fett were...

I've also read and re-read Harry Potter. I read the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings before they were movies, same with the Chronicles of Narnia.

Does that count?

If the Nerdocracy doesn't want you, you can join the Reform Movement.

(Edited because I can Nerd all day long, but I can't type fo' shit.)

I am hugely interested in many things that you've all classified as 'nerdy' but I've always considered my so called nerdy interests as geeky.

What do you guys all consider the difference?

(I am a HUGE Lord of The Rings geek - read the books once a year)

Geek is broad-based. You can be a geek about anything. Nerds tend to run in computers, tech, gaming, fantasy novels, etc.

I overlooked the typo. I'm a giver, you know. Verrry service-oriented.

I  you for more than just your phone.

Good, you can protect me from the forces of evil in the air.

p.s. - Hommy - did you see the pic of my crush in Shank's thread? Ahem, former crush. He's the one doing the pulling. Wait, why am I asking you? Never mind - there IS a cute girl in the pic too.

There you go. Death to djinnis. You are safe now.

I did. I was confused though. You said he wore a kilt. That was a skirt. There is a difference. He does look like he'd be fascinating watch perform though.

And, yes, cute girl. I fully support cute girls.

Is that some pagan - ahem - stuff?

I wasn't there that night or anything. I thought he was wearing pants in the pic, no? He does have a black "skirt" - though I thought it was one of those utilikilts or whatever. He's such a charmer. I pointed him out to Mister Man and at first he said, um, he's wearing a skirt. And then he met him and said, ok, I admit it, he's a charmer. Hah ha.

Dude, he's wearing black pants. She's wearing a nude bra - which is annoying me. Don't get me wrong - she's gawgeous. But what's with the hospital bra?

Anyhoo, black pants!

Nope, just some subterranean-level geekery. Only a Tim Powers fan is likely to get that one. It's a reference (and, in retrospect, a slightly incorrectly described reference) to his novel "Declare".

I can't suggest Tim Powers more highly.

There's more than one pic set on his site. One of those, has him in a plaid skirt.

p.s. this thread has jumped the shark.

And in such an intriguing fashion.

Is this fantasy? <squirm>

Yeah - he does have a kilt and he also has a plaid skirt. Where is Shank? He's gonna dig that, no?

Tim Powers? Historical Fantasy. Wierd History. Not sure what to call it. "Declare" revolves around Kim Philby, a british intelligence agent turned traitor for the USSR, and goes into the supernatural backstory behind Philby's actions. It's John LeCarre meets ... Fuck if I know, but some detail oriented fantasy author.

Another good one is "On Stranger Tides", which has Blackbeard as a voodoo houngan, the Fountain of Youth, and other fun stuff in the midst of an rollicking pirate tale.

Okay, just curious, as the only thing kiltlike was askirt. And, yeah, Shanks probably will enjoy that.

I mighta sorta read that one. Did my nerd cred just go up again?

Hmmm... Well, I am computerly inept and have never owned any gaming equipment more advanced than a Game Boy Color (the sweet see-through purple one).

I do love fantasy novels. But maybe not enough different fantasy novels to be a nerd?

...I am content in my geekdom.

As you should be. "Geek" is a large tent, very inclusive, unlike some exclusionary organisations *glares at satindesire*

*facepalm* I'm not gonna argue about who's nerdier than thou. I can whoop you on Halo 3 multiplayer and that's all that counts to me and my clan. So Nya. :D

P.S. Nerd=hot, cute, pretty face, sexy bod, fit, etc.

Geeks= greasy, acne, bad haircuts etc.

So, in a nutshell, Nerd is Good. Geek is Not. ^_^

As I try to make myself sleep, by reading every post on every thread, I have come to the conclusion that I am a Geek.

However, satindesire, I am not greasy, do not have acne or a bad haircut. But I did love playing Legend of Zelda once.

But I still cannot sleep,

Gaming - check
Fantasy novels - check
Computers and tech - no way! I will "repair" my computer if I have to, e.g. can't find someone to do it for me in a hurry.
Can you be a nerd without the tech stuff?

I always learned this the other way round. That geek = nerd with social skill and hygiene. My nerd points are pretty low, but my geek points soar if you put me in a museum.

That would be "geek" not "nerd", basically. Again, it is a more inclusive term.

"Clan" - the Nerd equivalent of a street gang

Yeah, I'm thinking the same thing.

Realistically, I left the "nerd" designation behind three computer languages ago. While I've built computers in ways that modern nerds would consider voodoo magic, I got tired of it all and walked away. so I'm the nerd equivalent of the Catholic grandpa bitching about how it was better when Mass was done in Latin, and hasn't been to church since the switch.
