son of the isolated blurts thread!

So fucking angry and frustrated. Where the fucking fuck is a punching bag when I need one?

Wow, looks like the lesbro ass kickin card is really full these days. Should I charter a plane?

Please. If you know any goombahs, please bring 'em. We're kneecaping what passes for the Board of Education in the fucked up state.

^^^ You aren't kidding.

Anybody know how I go about finding a first rate tutor?

Are there Huntington Learning Centers near you? Our local Huntington's are phenomenal.

If this Common Core crap is going to stick around, it may make high school students less appealing as tutors as they learned the old way.

We do have one, J. I'll give them a call and set up a consult. Thanks for the heads up.

And you aren't kidding wrt to the HS kids as tutors. My 15 year old is wicked smart (he's currently carrying Alg 2 and Geometry, concurrently, and getting A's). He's looking at this mess and shaking his head right along with me.

I am not big on "putting it out there to the universe" but the other night when the third scorpion (the bug, not the 80's band) in as many months was crawling directly towards my foot I lamented killing the "wind scorpion."

I didn't even know what it was when I killed it. They are FAST. Which makes them creepier and they look like scorpions. But they aren'... they are spiders I think. Also called "child of the earth." They eat scorpions, but not people.

Having been stung by one out of three scorpions of recent acquaintance I could use some counter-measures.

Tonight one of the likely offspring of the last wind scorpion paid me a visit. It isn't as fast as mama yet, but it is definitely on patrol.

I am not opposed to chemical warfare, but it doesn't seem to bother scorpions.

So catch me up, what is common core math? From the description I just read, it doesn't sound like a bad idea, but knowing how bureaucracy implements things, I'm sure it's less than ideal.

It's a combination of implementation, and of some material being developmentally inappropriate at certain age levels, Nip.

My third grader has been learning multiplication. These are some examples of questions from her last math test.

A. Select all the expressions that are equivalent to the product of 6 x 9:

(6x3) + (6 x 3)
(6 x 4) + (6 x 5)
6 x (6+3)
9 x (2+4)

B. Carol's class is square dancing at the Center for Creative Arts. To square dance, each dancer needs a partner. Then, 4 pairs of partners form a square. There are 3 groups of square dancers in Carol's class. The expression below shows the total number of square dancers in Carol's class.

(4x2) x 3

Which expressions also show the total number of square dancers in Carol's class? (Choose all that apply)

4 x (2x3)
4 x 6
8 x 4
4 + (2x3)

C. Henry wants to build a structure with his new Lego set. The Lego set contains five hundred legos. The structure will be three levels high. The first level is made of twenty-seven legos. The second level uses twice as many legos as the first level. The third level uses three times as many Legos for the third level as for the second level. How many legos does Henry use to build his structure with three levels?

If this pattern continues, does Henry have enough Legos in his set to build a fourth level? Show all of your thinking.

What the fucking fuck? These kids are just now learning multiplication. If you asked most of them what 4 x 4 is, they'd have to stop and draw a diagram to solve the problem. They can't tell you the answer off the top of their head is 16, because the districts have done away with speed drills. According to the "experts", studies have shown rote memorization isn't effective as a learning tool. (Ask me how many kids went into third grade still counting on their fingers because of this. And ask me how many of those kids are struggling even more this year, because they still need to use manipulatives for basic addition and subtraction.) Yet they are being asked for critical thinking skills that are developmentally more appropriate for 5th and 6th graders (this from her teacher, not from me).

Want to see a sample problem from her math practice book?

Julie buys a pair of earrings for $7. Now she would like to buy the same pair for 2 of her friends. How much will she spend for all 3 pairs of earrings?

Notice how much more complex the word problem from the test is compared to the practice one? The textbook was printed and ordered before it was determined what "standards" the kids would be held accountable for this year. You guessed it, the fucking state standardized test is much more complex. And the teachers have very little clue (and aren't being given much info, either) as to what's actually going to be on it. But it's still going to determine teacher evaluation and student promotion.

Fucked. Just so fucking fucked. And the kids are the ones suffering. Math was her best subject last year. This year, she's failing miserably. Ok. Need to stop. I'm getting pissed off all over again.

I can remember back to my years in school and to be honest, it was the same way 30 years ago, the examples to show the student how to work the problem did not match the level of the problems assigned to answer. The example would be, 1+1=2, the assignment would be like "find the volume of a cone . . .". I have never been good at math because it was never explained in a manner that made any sense, much less be presented in a way that was relevant to life.

Sadly, the insanity will never stop. I feel your pain, it doesn't take too much to get me to ranting about the rampant stupidity.

No, common core is a gift straight from the Devil himself.

NM, if you thought the way you learned math was bad, this stuff is crazy.
I may not be a math genius, but I believe I have a pretty good handle on 5th grade math.....until it turned common core.

So so pissed right now. I know getting out of Dodge was the right decision but it felt an awful lot like running away and I just don't do that. Grrrrrr!

*hugs Minxy*

I know some people from the west side of San Antonio who can make your problem disappear. ;):D Just sayin.'

Sick, bored, tired of watching movies, and I don't wanna cook. These people in my house insist on being fed anyway.

It's times like this, I wish I had a house elf.

I learned the hard way to trust my intuition but doesn't mean I like it. Had I had a bit more time I might have stayed and taken care of the problem myself, bad idea or not.

I hear that.

the fact that you do not have one is the fault of nargles, bail.

Fucking nargles.

My head is so stopped up right now, I'd swear it's infested with wrackspurts. :(
