Taboo. Open discussion, no attitude.

Okay, let's say that the world is at the brink of being technologically advanced enough that your basic laborer type of job is going away, being replaced by robots much like the assembly lines for cars but smarter. Think of some of the remote controlled or semi autonomous machines being developed for research on other planets. There's no reason that farms can't be pretty much totally automated. The way our economies are going now the divide between wealth and poverty is widening. I think it's the phase out of the mundane labor force. So why not start planning for this eventuality now and developing the methodology for human selective breeding?
Your talking to a woman who still goes to a Tailor to get her suits made. The quality of the human hand and the unique design is lost in mass production. Technology should enhance the human experience, not replace it.

Selective breeding is a horrible idea in my opinion. Ever seen Gattaca? One of my favorite movies about prejudice. Genetic engineering underestimates the power of the human will. What good is the potential of perfection if you have no desire to fulfill it?

BRAVO!!!!

Bravo... Death to Walmart...... And all the rest like it... Support your local artisans...

Selective breeding ...*sigh* Now THERE'S a term that will bring down a load of crap upon ones rhetorical noggin...

Hmmm ...... *sigh*
It would be easier to understand if it didn't work... *sigh* {again}
What works even better, is selective "non=breeding".
I am given to understand that historicly, at least one of the more northern countries managed to completely remove the trait of "manic-depressive" from their gene pool. Long winters and all that... A case of spring coming and "What happened to Olaf?... Well, he had an accident, his head fell off.".
A touch severe perhaps...But it DOES work.
Oh, and I am also given to understand that it has started to pop back up again... Due to immigration.

That's one reason why I play with vintage clothing... the detail and quality of construction can't even begin to compare to the trash produced, today.

So, if tech advances to the point where we aren't struggling just to survive out of need whatever would people do? There would still be artists, musicians, engineers, designers, tailors, chefs, winemakers and every other craft known. I think it would free people up to refine and pursue their creativity.

Selective breeding, genetic manipulation and the like. These ideas have always come up through history. Don't we all at some level practice some form of selective breeding by choosing who we have children with? Or more importantly, who we refuse to have children with?

Artist and musicians are generally the ones struggling to survive on their wages. How they paying for all these damn robots? Some people would consider sewing, cooking, picking/stomping/shifting/distilling grapes manual labor many people do only in their struggle to survive. Who will regulate what is fun work and what isn't? The designers and engineers will be too busy making the next best thing to replace the human effort to care. Maybe all the unemployed people?

Ok, how about this miss negativity. What say you play devils advocate for a little bit and try to think of the good things that could come out of it?

Yes, the title comes with the striped socks.

I could go for a bionic sub.

*we can rebuild him*
*we have the technology*
*we can make him better*

Just make sure he is "fully functional."

That's so true, of just about everything.

I have a lot of problems with the concept of selective breeding. I have a lot of problems with being judged. The two are connected in my mind.

OH HELL NO! You are sentenced to DIE...WHY on Earth should you get an organ that can prolong your life? Makes no fucking sense to me.

Then again, i am in favor of immediate execution for those sentenced to death.

What about those The Innocence Project have gotten released due to DNA analis after 18 years in prison, when it turns out it was the boyfriend and not the weird guy down the hall that raped and murdered two kids?

What about all of the guilty people running around. Innocent people die all the time, it's no different with the justice system. Heck, you could slip and fall in the shower and kill yourself. So a few innocent ones slip through the cracks and get executed, what's the big deal? It's not like the human species is going to go extinct if a few thousand a year get knocked off.

204 exonerations since the late 80s through The Innocence Project is hardly a few. http://www.innocenceproject.org/Content/351.php

Besides, if it was your mother, father, uncle, brother, etc, you wouldn't want them executed for something they weren't guilty of in the first place.

Why take the chance of executing someone who is innocent? I think the courts should revisit all death row sentences before DNA was administered. How many more confessions obtained after three straight days of interrogations without food or water or sleep should we allow to go through? Miranda did a lot of our justice system, but there is soooo much more that needs to be done.

God kills indiscriminately. Why not the government?

*laughs*

That is so evil, it might just work

I'm really getting confused with all of this. People die all the time, it's no big deal. If a few, fuck it, if a few million innocent people are killed every year it's only a drop in the bucket and they might as well provide some entertainment on the way down.

I think that public execution should be brought back with the method of killing fitting the crime that the person being killed is accused of.

We could pay per view the more notorious executions in an attempt to defray the costs of the prison system. Why not launch a prison reality tv show? That would be great!

That'll all be part of the organ donation thing. We want our prisoners to get lots of healthy exercise.

Excercise my ass... There was a time when the state of Texas made a profit off of every damned prisoner that wasn't maximum security..

Profit is one thing but I'd shoot for them not being a burden on the taxpayer. We should work them like sled dogs!

I've honestly lost the thread of this thread but, um, I couldn't help myself.

The topic is Taboos, anything taboo and discussion of them.

We need to come up with some more taboos, I think someone mentioned snakes in the ass.

I read something somewhere, not sure where but I think it may have been collarme. A Domme had punished her slave by having her slave take the doggy position and having a dog fuck her. She was on the receiving end of a lot of hate and basically was saying that what went on between her and her Domme was not open to judgement by others.

How's that for breaking a taboo.
