Thank you to the notorious BFG for opening up our house to our lit friends.

Ahhhh, there you are! I'm glad you remembered the cranberries, and I love the Cranberries!

Your place is lovely! Shall I bring the green bean casserole and pecan pie?

Yes, Jenny! That will be perfect!
My uncle just sent us pecan's from his tree in Texas last week... saved me a fortune! LOL

My family started a tradition because my mom always worked the day after Thanksgiving (hairdresser). And my dad isn't a huge fan of turkey.

So we would have all the regular sides you have at Thanksgiving but we'd have King Crab legs instead. Just a huge pot of water, put them in and we were eating.

Planning on doing both a turkey and crab legs this year :)

That's pretty cool about the crab legs. Nice that you are keeping the tradition.

Oh I love green bean casserole, stuffing and mashed potatoes...gravy poured over everything!

What can I make (or more likely, go out and buy but put in a homemade looking container)?

Gravy poured over everything huh. :p

Lol, that's a trick daddy has used several times. Lol. I'm exhausted after making this dish... I had to buy it and move it to this container.

I'm thinking we could use apple pie. Don't see that crossed off BFG's list yet. :)

I'll make apple pie. I love a thick crusted apple pie!!! It's my favorite after pecan!

Is there anything unspoken for yet? I'd love to join you and I'm a pretty good cook, if I do say so myself.

I can't carve a turkey worth shit, though. So I'm glad someone else is doing that.

Hooray! Pies are hard...best left to others. :)

How about I bring wine? Pretty sure I can't screw that up.

I can bring the beer and wine...
Also, how about some nuts for appetizer?

Oh, and I make this awesome creamed spinach ... if you want.

Or whatever else!

Yes! I love creamed spinach! I haven't had that in a long time.

:D I use a lot of Parmesan and Gruyere in it....:D
It is not healthy. :D :D

Creamed spinach it is then...

Oh yes that is a favorite of mine too. That along with the new Thanksgiving tradition King Crab!! I always thought that was saved for New Years Day but adding it to Thanksgiving is great!

We do King Crab for Christmas! So good. :)

I'm bringing the cheesecakes!!!!!!

I'll make a cranberry one that is my favorite and I have a new recipe I found for an apple pie one. Hope you don't mind if I add caramel to it!

For New Year's we always followed the southern tradition.

Ham - prosperity (pigs "root" forward)

Black Eyed Peas, greens, and cornbread - wealth ("green" greens, peas or other beans are round like coins)

Cornbread - always made in a round pan or cast iron skillet, not a square pan. Not only is it golden, representing wealth, but a round or ring-shaped object is good luck for the new year.

Mashed potatoes - health (and since they are grown underground, give you stability and firm footing in the year ahead).

You should NOT eat crab or lobster on New Years Day, as they move sideways and backwards and that means you can have setbacks in the year ahead.

Same for chicken or any other winged bird - they have wings and can fly away, plus they scratch backward, causing regret or dwelling on the past.

I am loving all this talk of food, can we start a petition to get Thanksgiving in the UK?

Oh, this is looking like a very wonderful get together so far! I'm excited!

AKL, thank you for that explanation on New Year's. *starts planning NYE party*

In our home, the tradition on Thanksgiving and Christmas is a huge pot of sauerkraut and pork country ribs, simmered all day long. I don't know why we don't do it more often, but it's been going on for years... since before my mom was a child! Lol

I know what I'm bringing. I make little acorns out of Hershey kisses and Nutter Butter bites. Google nutter butter acorns if you want to see them.
