The conversation thread

What do you eat when food is not interesting? I have no appetite or cravings. Nothing seems particularly appetizing right now.

Exciting things today.

Groceries, making a couple of salads for snacking later in the week.

Went with a friend to look at a couple of kitties she's thinking of adopting. (She's thinking she will but will sleep on it) My cats were jealous and a little pissy when I returned so catnip bribes helped adjust their attitude.

Pulled some roasted pork for tacos tomorrow and will use the leftovers for bbq.

Did some research on passport renewals in my area. Fuck. Now I have to get a passport photo.

I told you...exciting day.

Who knows what tomorrow will bring? Laundry and weeding flower beds? Oooh!

I worked today. Just chilling the rest of the weekend. I may cook.

Food is never not interesting, but cereal with ice cold milk is good when I’m just not feeling it.

I always forget about cereal.

I have done nothing with my day. I’ve been cuddling with a crocheted stuffed animal and hiding from the world.

It's the period of weather here where it can't make up it's mind if it should be late fall/early winter or summer.

Has the weather made up its mind already?

It's been unseasonably warm here. Records were broken in November. Barely seen any snow so far. It snowed a little this morning, but looks like it's already gone.

It may have for the most part but it can still change and get warmer again. We finally had some temperatures below freezing at night recently.

I have no idea where it is that you live, but the temp changes seem wild there. What's winter usually like?

I live in a southern state in the US. Winter for me rarely includes snow. If it does snow, everything shuts down. It's a good thing everything shuts down because most people here have no idea how to drive in snow or rather how to be a cautious driver in a different situation. The temperature doesn't really go much below freezing a lot or for many days in a row. I have probably what is a medium heavy coat that I haven't worn yet. People tend to dress with layers because it can warm up considerably during the day during fall or early winter. I think the coldest time tends to be January and early to mid February. All of this is based on my not so great memory.

It's been so dark here recently. A few more weeks, then it'll slowly start get better again. It's not so cold, though.

My favorite pub gave me a Christmas present! A t-shirt, a tote bag and a bottle of beer all from a brewery whose products I tend to enjoy a lot. I hadn't been there for a little while, so today they texted me and asked me to drop by because they want to give me something. The t-shirt will become a part of my official pub quiz outfit once the pub quiz resumes again. :)

I already mentioned this in the smiles thread, but it's just so fun that I need to put it here too. It's also maybe the best thing that's happened this year. :D

What's everybody's favorite holiday tradition and dish?

A picture of you and your new t-shirt would make my Christmas a happy one.

I'm sure that I have answered this, at least with respect to food, a few times here over the years. The tl;dr version is tourtiere and plum pudding, from my French and English Canadian grandparents.

Most recently, I have come to enjoy the peacefulness of our usual Christmas day. Usually we have finished with gifts and a light brunch by noon and then the afternoon is quiet. Our main meal is relatively simple, though it usually includes turkey and a salad or other dish that only appear on holidays, and it's now relatively late in the day. In my childhood, Christmas was a hectic day that began with an early church service, moved to a quick but filling eggs and meat and potatoes breakfast, followed by gifts and preparing to travel to do Christmas gifts and dinner with the extended family. It was exhausting. I much prefer our quiet celebration now.

Some kind of poultry.

No Thanksgiving, so no turkey here. And I'm never really satisfied with the skin of the poultry I'm making myself.

We usually have appetizers on Christmas Eve. My Christmas day is usually very quiet. I've been thinking about how Christmas isn't celebrated by everyone lately. It's so prevalent in many countries even though there are so many people that don't celebrate it at all. I really wish learning about other religions and cultures was more prevalent. I think I want to take a class on world religions so I can learn more.

We usually take a drive and look at Christmas lights on the 24th followed by a cheese plate and wine or sometimes a toddy (depending on where we live).

We exchange gifts Christmas day although last year I got a driveway and this year the oven so no real gifting for a couple of years. LOL

We try to fix a new dish each year and we're discussing Beef Wellington for this year. I may just beg off with surf and turf instead.

I miss the get togethers of yesteryear also. On Christmas Eve, we gathered at the family farm, had a big ham dinner then the festivities started with each of the grandkids singing a carol either solo or in 2s or 3s. All 14 of us! Afterwards, we had a gift exchange and some years that meant a gift for each person and other years names were drawn. The volume of gifts under the tree each year was truly amazing and memorable as there were 5 kids and all their children.

Christmas Day was spent with the other side of the family (4 kids and their families) and pretty much the same thing but without the singing.

It was exhausting as a kid so I don't know how the parents did it year after year.
