The Nail Thread

I tried gel polish twice this summer and I like how it lasts but hate how it’s so difficult to remove even when it starts chipping. I feel like my nails are thinner now too. I’ve tried a new brand and want to try some others. I want all of the colors though.
Did you try the kind that you harden with UV/heat? Or the kind that doesn’t need any special equipment? I’ve wondered about the kind that doesn’t need anything special. How does it work? Is it really gel?

I feel you on wanting all the colors. I bought a few new ones again even though I probably have already enough to last a lifetime.

It’s good to see you, btw! ☺️

I tried the one that is hardened with UV light which is another concern. I don’t really know about the gel that doesn’t need anything special. I definitely need to practice not getting polish on cuticles.

It’s good to see you too!

The kind of gel that doesn’t need anything isn’t really gel (afaik), but some brands market it as such. Gel is really difficult to remove. 😔 That’s one reason why I’m dubious of getting my finger nails done with it. My nails are prone enough to split as is, so while the gel would protect them at least a little, I wonder how my nails would fare after the gel is removed.

I never manage to paint my nails without getting polish on my cuticles, but usually it washes off when I take a shower and wash my hands a few times. Applying some cuticle oil (or olive oil) before starting to paint also helps. Just make sure there isn’t any oil on your nails and wipe off any excess oil from around the nail as well.

I was much more careful about trying not to get the polish on cuticles last time and it has lasted well. I don’t think I’ll do a gel polish again as this has lasted so well and I can actually remove it when I want to change colors. Are there any particular brands of polish you like?

Having a good base coat helps a lot with making the color last, too. I use a really cheap but good one from Essence, colour grip base coat. It’s been such a good find!

Most of my polishes are Essie, OPI or Mavala. I also have some other brands but those three cover the most of what I wear.

As is typical of me, I ripped off the blue nail polish yesterday when I was stressing about family things and avoiding mom’s passive aggressive comments and phone calls. Sigh. 😔

I’m trying this nude/pale pink thing now to see how long this lasts decent. Might be my nail choice for the upcoming trip. Although skipping nail polish altogether would be the least stressful, so maybe that’s what I’ll do.

I like that color! I can’t really do sheer colors because I can’t get them even. I just ordered some new colors and can’t wait for them to arrive.

That’s not perfectly even either, but close enough that it looks ok from the distance. 😂 Mostly I don’t like sheers because the white parts of my nails are very uneven, probably because of my childhood habit of mostly chewing my nails into oblivion.

What colors did you get? ☺️

I got some grays, pinks, and a turquoise. I can’t wait to receive them. I’ll post a pic when I receive them. I’m going to redo my nails tonight with some other polish I have.

Gah, all the uncleaned bits of base coat on the sides of my nails really show up in pics. But I want to keep the bar of posting low. 😂

Essie Dance till Dessert. First time wearing. I’m such a nail polish hoarder…

Mrs Always Right by Essie. Which is basically me, anyways.

It was difficult to get a good picture where the color doesn’t come out either pink or plain red. It’s kind of brownish red mixed with pink, I guess.

I’m already saying goodbye to my nails because I’ll be eating crawfish and I tend to use my nails way too harshly when chipping into the crawfish’s tiny little bodies for the yummy morsels.

Red back-to-work nails. Sigh. Why can’t I always have a vacation? Work is so much worse than vacation.

I took the pic by accident, but it shows my current nail color so I thought I’d post it here. 😁

It’s a very untypical color for me but I’m liking it a lot! It’s a little more lilac-y in most lightings IRL than it is in the pic. Salt Water Happy by Essie.

I feel weird repeatedly posting pics of my feet here (since I don't get my fingernails done), so I'll just tell y'all what color my toenails are now: bright-ass red.

Yup, no feet here from me either.
Painting mine with OPI’s Green on the runway.
Pretty duochrome is visible in these swatches:

Some recent nails. The burgundy thumb pic is an accident once again, but it shows the color, so why not post…

When I changed shoes I saw my naked foot next to my boots and realized that my beloved OPI Private Jet is so matchy matchy with the boots!🤩

I have house slippers that I wear when I go to sauna. They’re hot pink and last week my toe nails matched them so perfectly that I laughed a little when I noticed. Not my usual color at all, neither for nails nor any clothing.

Current nails are this metallic lilac number that I can never decide if I like it or not.
