Saw this on a forum the other day.

"If I am ever on life support, unplug me. Then plug me back in. See if that works."

Maybe I'm getting old...

...but if i mention "Devil in the Dark" in the presence of a dozen or so geeks, even if they are mostly under 30, some of them should know what it's the title of. No?

So lately I've been doing a lot of recreational reading on different kinds of warships, particularly the Pre-Dreadnought battleships (think late 1800's). I stumbled across this very cool color photo of the USS Texas, circa 1898 (this is the one that fought in the Spanish American War, not the one that served in the World Wars).

The Texas (and her sister ship, the Maine had a very weird gun layout, where their main guns were arranged in echelon, with one gun on the front left side of the ship, and the other on the right back side. In theory, it'd let them fire both guns forward or in a broadside, but in practice it meant the ship could do neither very well (firing both guns forward or aft caused a lot of structural strain, due to the uneven arrangement, and firing them both in broadside caused damage to the ship from the blast of the gun firing from the far side)
