The New Poems List

_Land, I too am puzzled about why you found lex luthor's poem distasteful. I myself do not feel the same way about my poetry, but then I take nothing that seriously. I am a follower of the laughing buddha.

I can't quite figger why SJ's poems would be low-voted because they're mentioned here, nor why he would worry. If he looks at the top list he would find that my poem 'Vicious Bitter' has been in the top 10 for a while, and even I can't figure that one out. I think it sucks. If I hadn't already voted myself a five, I would vote it a one to knock it out of there.

But then again, why are there no sp poems in the top ten? He is easily my fave. Plus I love 'San Jose' and 'STREETCAR ISLANDS' by SJ. I refrained from giving links so they don't get low-voted.

If SJ would prefer me not to mention his poems on acount of low voting then, he could simply let me know..... I would have tought that the poem being read was more improtant then what the mass populous though anyway, but that is me. If something i write touches one person then having writen and posted it was worth the effort taken.

Ok, perhaps distaste full was the wrong choice of words, I just got stuck on the poem.................. I know all to well the feeling of looking down at what i have written and saying Oh shit, is that me? I dont like the feeling, and that is how i felt reading it
Sorry

The subjective nature of poetry means never having to say you're sorry.

I know, K-dog I wasnt apologizing for how i felt, just how it sounded......i still feel the same way, but i did think enough of the form and skill to post it anyway it was skillfully written
and i didnt mean to detract from the author _Land

_Land, do just as you feel and don't worry about anything. I enjoy and pay attention to numbers, and many of you talk about votes and voting, so I am social and talk about them too. As I written many times (too many :)), votes as such don't mean anything serious on Literotica. Otherwise they are fun. I wish Literotica would provide more detailed information but that's too much to ask.
I would have tought that the poem being read was more improtant then what the mass populous though anyway, but that is me.
It's me even more than you, I think.
If something i write touches one person then having writen and posted it was worth the effort taken.
But here we differ drastically. The Hallmark "poetry" touches the greatest number of readers but it's worthless. (It provides a good material for social studies though :)).

It's great that you are active on this thread, have fun,

  • KD, just be yourself, do not change anything on my account;
  • I never said anything one way or another, I just have observed a correlation. But I don't care.
  • It is too late anyway :). The poems listed in my sig are among my most mature and ambitious poems. They are not "lovely" as some of my other poems but nevertheless. They are also among the most voted (within the group of my submissions) and among the lowest voted. Their average went down after the discussion about Buk (remember? :)). After the recent discussion I got more 1s and 2s (but also 5s).
The audience out there either votes during the first two-three days after a poem is submitted or not at all. The delayed votes come mostly from this board. And the easiest for the participants of this board is to vote on the poems in the sig and on the poems which are listed in the discussions. When one day all my sig poems got (low) votes then probability is extremely close to one that it was someone from this board. On that day most likely it was just one person. Otherwise some poems would be voted twice (by two different readers) and some not at all. But when it is uniform, one vote per poem, than it rather indicates one person.

Once again, it's ok, I don't mind. You asked a question and I am answering. That's all. But it does support my view about nonsensical character of voting on poems on Literotica. People who do are often deaf to language, blind to images, and have no clue about the contents. All they enjoy is playing a critic on Literotica, giving grades. They must feel important when they do it.

Let me illustrate my claims on a few simple examples. My poem basketball scored 109 views and 2 votes (plus mine), the average of the 2 votes is 1.5 (i.e. the votes had to be 1 and 2; they were not from me :)). Here is the poem:

                                        to Roy Zornov
basketball

        the round ball
        bouncing off the rim
in the lights of the arena --
        it may go either way

As you see, the poem has an attractive, clear-cut image, and a straight metaphore of justice ("round ball", i.e. unbiased) and fate. Even if you don't pay attention to the metaphor it is a strong poem. As I said, many readers are deaf, blind, dumb and sometimes even mean. If I spoiled my poem, if my title was:

                justice & fate

then most likely my poem would get higher votes, even more votes, I am pretty sure of this. (But I am not going to spoil my poems :)).

gargle got posted on Sept 2, eight days ago, it scored only 28 views and two votes, which average 2.0. Again, this is a simple poem about a psychotic woman cutting the throat of her lover. The poem is nevertheless "lovely" and light, it's a joke in terms of its contents. First of all it was written for the sake of its sound (alliterations!) and image (light!!!). It is a play on light:

gargle

        the light finds its way
        to blind me
        oh lady put that blade
        down

        you drive across my eyes
lay with me side by side
        leave that blade aside

        another ray
        has caught my eye afire
        three times a lady
        one time a psycho
        has a chilling affect
        on my desire
        oh blah blah blah

A reader does not have to know about the disco song from early 80ies:   you're once/ twice/ three times a lady...   but you would think that s/he should be sensitive to poetry. Not at all. So, I have nothing to apologize for, and I stay cheerful me, let them stick to genitalogy and Hallmark stuff and awkward,, in your face, cliched metaphors with nonworking images. I have my fun and even humor in my poems (even "amplifiers" in my "summer end" poem had a touch of humorto it--sometimes humor can be gentle and positioned next to a drama).

time on your hands is like my sig poems, advanced, you don't see such poems on Literotica, and in general, poems on this level are rare. Nevertheless, it has simple language, and a simple story. A poetically sensitive (and sensible :)) reader would enjoy it intuitively, without getting into its philosophical meaning (which by the way is simple too). And what happened: 132 views, 1 vote (excluding my own), voted 1. What can you say? Funny. "Fuckin' my whore on the sidewalk" would score better.

Here is how my sig poems, including "San Jose", and STREETCAR ISLANDS fare (I exclude my own vote):
  • monk: 130 views, 4 votes, average 1.75
  • jazz: 114 views, 2 votes, average 2.
  • San Jose: 118 views, 4 votes, average 2.
  • life is a private party: 114 views, 2 votes, average 1.5.
  • STREETCAR ISLANDS: 103 views, 2 votes, average 4.

But if poem "STREETCAR ISLANDS" were in my sig then most likely it would fare worse (you see :)).

    Regards,

i don't vote on my own poems.
i let the words stand on their own.
maybe that's why some scores are lower.

am i the only one who doesn't vote on their own work?

just curious.

You take it too seriously. It's irrelevant. For a longer time I didn't vote on my own poems. Then several of us were "victimized" by votes 1 spread en mass. At that time, on a whim, I started to vote. Then many of those 1-votes were removed. Somehow some of my 5s and 4s were removed too. No, there was no abuse in this case, none on my part, and none to superficially "support" me. (Would it be a software bug after all)? Now for some time I don't vote on my poems and I won't bother in future. It's all fun and trivia.

Regards,

Thanks for explaining that Senna, i wasn't sure how serious people took the voting.

actually i'm happy if anyone enjoys them as much as i did writing them.

thanks again for taking the time to reply.

~E-nymph

E-Nymph, I vote on my poems. In some cases, I'm the only one. lol

Since you enjoy the voting/viewing numbers, S.J., you may find this interesting. I removed about 40-50 poems from lit. earlier in the year. Those poems consisted of rhymes like:

My panties cling to my cunt
Wetness flows between my lips
Dark hairs curl with moisture
Drop of pussy dew drips

Trickles so hot and nasty
Runs down my thigh
Feeling coming from inside my panties
Makes me sweat and sigh

If you feel the need to retch, be my guest.

Anyway, during that time of insanity, I had 30+ poems on the top list. At one time, I had 10 in the top 12-13 spots. But you go look now and see how much Wicked Eve is on the list -- usually, only a few. I don't usually write about my drippy pussy anymore, so maybe that's why. lol

Though, there are still excellent poems on the list -- just not nearly enough.

Hallmark poetry would be what? Produced to touch the masses?
Have you read anything I have written SJ, tell me what it is that makes my poetry hallmarkish, LOL I dont see anything in the top ten I dont think I have a single poem with more then 9 votes
most of what I write may get 3 votes, Hardly hallmark variety brand poetry I have had one poem viewed 126 times. I very seldom write for others, I write for my self. What I meant is if something I wrote touches one person then it was worth the effort to post it......... not that what i craved was the touchy feel form other people. I have one poem that in my opinion is one of the best I have written, not becuase of poetic merit, or great reviews, but because i got one anonymous feedback thats said simply this " Wow, Im not alone, some one else has been there, thanks for writing this" That poem has three votes and 96 views
Perhaps my sense of humor gets in the way of you seeing who I really am SJ, but afore you say hallmark and _land in the same sentence, read my work. It is far from Poetic perfection, it has a style all my own. Somebody please shoot me if i ever try and mimic someone else's style. I havnt gone back and read everything you have posted to this site, but I have gone back and read a considerable amount, and enjoyed most of it.....not because it is the style that I enjoy the most..........But because it is uniquely You. No one else write like you, has your wit or humor. That is why I even read the New poems, If they were all the same why bother.................Why dont you do the New poems thread over this weekend SJ, As far as I know it is open, and I for one would love to see what you appreciate about some of the new poems that come out.

I love individuality, not two people in this forum would pick out the same list on any given day. Kindly _Land

Well, see this is the thing about the list

who are the people who vote? what is the point? some of them are writers who look at the various elements of of a poem, some are horny people who want to be titillated but could care less that you came up with some heart-piercing metaphor, others like pretty rhymes, and on and on ad nauseum. so what does having a poem in the top list mean? this is why i contend that having a poem highly rated here is great in terms of exposure and potential new readers, but as far as the quality of a piece of writing, i think it is indicative of zip.

_Land / Re: SJ

_Land, hold your horses!

In my response I didn't comment or judge your poetry at all. I only reacted to your opinion on what is a worthy poem. You wrote:

If something i write touches one person
then having writen and posted it
    was worth the effort taken.

To counter this opinion, understood as a general opinion about what is a worthy poem, I provided scores of examples of rather worthless (Hallmark) poems which do, in a sense, touch and move people. That's all.

The same here. OK, trivia time. My most "popular" poem (1520 views) was voted on 9 times, including my own vote. After excluding it, the average of the 8 votes is: 2.65, wow! :) The next one was voted on 6 times. Of 141 submissions only 14 poems were voted on 4 or more times (and that includes in each of these 14 cases my own vote). Of these 14 only three were voted on average at level 4 (one poem) or higher (two more poems). One of the latter was hit only 33 times and nevertheless was voted on 4 times (or add my vote for a total of 5 votes). It was posted only on August 11.

Thus 137 submissions were voted on three times or less.

Re: _Land / Re: SJ

LOL, ok ;) perhaps I went a lil gung ho there. I wasnt implying hallmark poetry though..........more like your wedding poem.......perhaps to some it would seem indiferent in regards to the happy thoughts of marriage........... never the less it sits on my desk top.... Unappreciated by the masses, but touching me.

That is what i was implying with my comment...........

Would still like to see you do the new poem thread, for that matter would like to see others do it as well, we all have different tastes. Thats what makes this community what it is.

Regards _Land

:rose: I havnt addressed The 9/11 thread as of yet, so I will do so briefly here.

I remember riding the bus
Sitting in the back
Holding hands
Dreaming dreams
Teenagers in love

The romance withered
Friendship grew strong
following destiny's path
You were a military brat
I just a simple farm boy

I dropped out, married
naval acadamy called you
The school of hard knocks
The school of officers
time and distance, seperate

I woke up this morning
To my usual mess
tripping on toys, ouch
I go to work, do my job
listen to the radio

The events unfold
horrors. terrorism
I turn on the tube
and watch in disbelief
numb

Three days later
E-mail arrives
from a mutual friend
You proudly served
untimely died

I remember riding the bus
Sitting in the back
Holding hands
Dreaming dreams
Teenagers in love
