here's another MANU I'd like to save...

image.php

The following post was made by MANU in Jan 2010:

I was discussing the new Comment System with a Lit author just now and the author asked a very good question. She said, and I paraphrase, "Why the %#$& did you remove the voting element from the comment form?" Actually, she was very nice, but it sounds more exciting this way!

When she asked about the voting, I realized that I hadn't explained that part of the update yet. So, here's the answer:

Yes, the voting element is no longer part of the comment form. That is intentional, and we've been thinking about it for a long time. Basically it's a change in our thinking about what the Story Comments system is or should be. In the past, we thought of it as a place for readers to REVIEW a story. Now, we are thinking of it more as a place for readers to DISCUSS a story. Reviews are generally static one-time things. Discussions are ongoing and dynamic. To encourage more discussion, we felt that separating the voting and comments was necessary.

Since the original comment system was created, the voting system has been greatly improved. You can now, as you all know, vote on a story easily with one click and without leaving the page. The voting element lives above the comment form. As a result, we don't think that this change will have any negative effect on the number of votes that stories are getting. But we do think that the new comment system will eventually lead to a big increase in the number of comments being left on stories.

Then we have to find a way to make the sorting of the comments - and threaded replies to those original comments - make sense. Using oldest to newest is the most simple solution. If we just sorted newest to oldest, disregarding the thread, it would become confusing. Maybe we can look into some kind of hybrid system that show the thread with the most recent comments at the top of the feedback board, like on this very forum that we are posting on right now. I will think about it, but please do let me know if you have any suggestions.

This is just the first "baby step" rollout of the new comment system. The next version will have more bells and whistles. I don't want to spoil the surprise just yet (and I'm still not sure what order things will be rolled out in), but there are big improvements coming to the entire comment system. Threaded comments and special highlighting of the comments/replies left by the author of each story are just two of the improvements you can look forward to in the near future.

During all of the upgrades, we will closely monitor the number of comments & votes to make sure that the changes don't negatively affect either. If we see any dramatic decreases in votes or comments, we'll adjust course. But, in the long run, we are pretty confident authors should see a big increase in story comments once all of the planned features are rolled out.

Thanks for your patience and for all of the feedback and suggestions. All of the changes we're making are based on user feedback, suggestions, and even complaints!

This Fixed your post. The poor alt can't read any better than scouries can write.

I would like to save this one for future reference...

...so i'll post most of it here...

QUOTE ace I don't mind addressing this question. Yes, of course, any stolen images should be deleted from this forum (and the website isn't good about doing that even when they are reported)--and, yes, I would be in favor of just erasing the accounts of those who habitually persist in doing it after they realize it is not permitted. A stolen image is a stolen image. The enjoyment of the ones viewing the reposted stolen images isn't what controls this.

This is a writers' site; if we have no interest in protecting the propriety rights of others creating stories and images, we have no right to be concerned about the protection of our own work…

Well leave it to ace to be the first non-scourian to make an intelligent post on the lovergirl thread. Actually when we sponsored this thread it wasn’t intended for LITEROTICANS of his mental ability. We were using lovergirl as a door to the less IQ’d.

However since he has made the post I feel it incumbent on me to address it.

He’s absolutely right that if posters of these images were advised that it wasn’t permitted they should be stopped from doing it. But he knows, as do all of us, that it is permitted! One simply has to look at the list of picture threads (the number of posts and views) Jacqui posted earlier to understand this.

The QUEEN wants the “Nipples Thread” and its posted pictures. Does anyone doubt this? I mean its impossible to miss (as are the other picture threads). I even asked the palace some years ago, when this “hotlinking” issue came up once before and one of my pictures was removed, what was going on.

I got the old wink, wink, nudge, nudge response. They have a rule but they don’t enforce it. In fact they accept that the picture threads are the main thing keeping the forums alive. I was told to continue what I was doing but every once in a while they’d delete one to keep the AHland whiners happy. But don’t worry jim they said. And so I’ve followed instructions…

If, at some time in the future they decide that they want to stop all “hotlinking” on the picture threads, I, james r scouries, will be delighted to comply with their enlightened decision. Once I find out what “hotlinking” is…

Well, yes, there's a blink and nod response by the website despite having included it in their taboo rules (forum rule #3). It's not any more up to the website than to individual posters to say that it's either legal or ethically right to steal and repost, though (especially on a writers' website, where writers should be just as respectful of the propriety rights of others as they expect to be accorded themselves).

You failed to include the nonlazy, easy button fix I included for this. All anyone has to do is hyperlink to the home site rather than repost the image and all is good. That too inconvenient for you to respect the ownership rights of others?

christ we can't get a break...

Miami Heat player Chris Bosh’s masseuse dies after massage session at athlete’s home

Miami Heat player Chris Bosh’s masseuse died Monday after she arrived at Bosh’s Miami Beach home and collapsed.

According to a Miami Beach police report, the unidentified woman arrived at the Heat player’s North Bay Road home at 10:24 a.m. Monday for a massage session. She looked “well and in good spirits,” but she suddenly passed out around 2:28 p.m.

She was taken to Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach, where she died around 11:45 p.m.

Well I’m sorry to disagree but it is up to the web site to set its rules. In this case we’ve all been clearly told by the actions of the owners that it is fine to ignore this #3 rule (if that’s its number).

As to the ethics of individuals posting (you call it stealing and reposting) the fact is that most of the pictures posted via “hotlinking” on this site are from sites that are more than happy to have their pictures spread around the web. Its advertising for them that they welcome. Again you know this.

As to the “nonlazy easy button” I’m not quite sure what you’re talking about. I have a feeling whatever you are talking about isn’t that easy. If it was I’d have thought MANU would have advised all the picture threads of this convenient fix.

Jacqui was doing some archival research for me today and suddenly she arrived in my office carrying her laptop and laughing uproariously. Seeing the question in my eyes she turned her computer and let me see the picture on the screen.

This is why I don't put darkboy on iggy.

I'd quote the parts of your post to me that show you just don't get it (or, rather, don't choose to get it), but I'm too busy laughing.

Hotlinking means you're stealing bandwidth from the website. When you post an image on another website and display it, you're accessing the original website of the image, using bandwidth they pay for. When you do it on several threads, over multiple days, every time anyone opens one of those threads, it's costing the website where you stole the image from money.

It doesn't provide any advertising for the website, because you don't provide any link back to the website. All you're doing is stealing their content and their bandwidth for your use. Even linking back in most cases wouldn't be advertising the website would want, because I seriously doubt anyone would want their content associated with your writing or you personally.

You'll notice that my image you're complaining about is hosted on my server which I pay for. I don't steal other people's bandwidth. Even when I use an image from a free-for-use site, I still upload the image to my server.

And you know full well what that image was. I was attempting to show sarahhh the fundamentals of cover design. Look at how the title vanishes into the image and the horrible pixel mess of the text ( where you can see it ) This is most easily demonstrated by displaying the image in grayscale.

That's what I get for being helpful even to egotistical, hateful scumbags :p

C’mon darkboy you know exactly what you were trying to do. And it wasn’t to help sarahhh. Interestingly I’ve had Jacqui researching the serena story for the last few days. My opinion at the time and since was it was better just to leave it alone. But given the continuing revisiting of the question by you and ace and others I’m considering writing the scourian history of said events.

And as it happens your “helping sarahhh” with covers occurred in the weeks immediately preceding the events in question and so Jacqui was quickly able to bring up your posts on my thread in the first quarter of 2009. I was actually surprised at how ugly your comments were during that period and how you and ace specifically have to take huge amounts of the blame for what eventually happened. I’d forgotten how really badly you, ace and the kittens had treated him. Even back then you invariably would end your posts with the same type of ugly comment you ended your latest with.

Here’s one of your kinder posts from that period “Just sitting back, laughing, and enjoying sarahhh repeatedly flunking out on question #1 of the Lit version of "Are you smarter than a 5th grader”.

What a helpful darkboy .

You know what? I don’t think sites like the METART or BRAVO picture ones mind having their pictures “hotlinked” onto LITEROTICA’S forums. I mean if they really did they’d do something about it, wouldn’t they? There are thousands of their pictures on this site. And many of these images do have internet addresses on them that does help direct LITEROTICANS to their pay sites.

And how much does it cost these sites to have just one picture “hotlinked” onto LITEROTICA for say a year? A $1000 a year? A $100? $10? $1? One cent? A tenth of a cent? It would be interesting to know. Maybe I could set up an account with LITEROTICA and they could divert some of my ROYALTY earnings to pay these bandwidth charges whatever they are. Why not? Share the wealth…

...of course if they did get referrals from LITEROTICA and the SCOURIES thread we'd expect that they would send us a commision on their sales. It'd be only fair...

Dear mr (or mrs as the case may be) hub in hose (another ALT from texas?), mcguinness (a drunk Irishman) and mini max (the wife beater),

We at ScouriesWorld would just like to advise you that we’ve sponsored another thread, the dumbed down lovergirl’s (yes the convicted cheat) I love scouries thread for such as you. We feel that the three of you, given your intellectuals levels, would be much more comfortable posting there and not here in this more advanced thread.

So please accept our invitation and in future do all your scouries related posting there. Let’s all work together to make the scourian threads an even better place to post.

Thank you,

We went round the loop here a couple of years ago with KillerM.

There is no theft or breach of copyright with inline linking (colloquially called 'hotlinking'). An <img> link is used by one site to link to another site's content so no image has been copied or stolen.

Again, bandwidth can't be 'stolen' because it's a speed of data transfer (bits per second) not a measurable quantity. A site contracts with a provider but doesn't pay more, just suffers a degredation in download times if too much traffic is attracted.

It is fairly simple for a site to block 'hotlinking' using .htaccess files which can show anything from 'this image was hotlinked' to a ridiculed image of scouries limp dick.

Do I like 'hotlinking'? Absolutely not, unless there is a justified reason. Dark gave the clear and moral explanation of how to avoid it. I don't think scouries has the balls to buy his own domain.

If I scan a scouries' thread, I can't help but participate in the offensiveness he pervades. The management, who are adamant in protecting copyright of lit authors, should take action.

PS: Just to add, anyone who links to images that are too big for the lit screen should have his balls cut off IMHO.

vioan: scouries is sooooo hot!!!!

I love these two!!!

Now these are the type of people that meet the scouries thread intelligence quotient! We got rid of the three clowns and got gina tina and vioan, both beautiful, intelligent women with great breasts, in return. How good a trade was that for us?

Okay we did get another post from the nakedsub nut but I did promise to take him off ace’s plate for a while so I guess I’ll just have to live with him.

As for miss odalisque? You read her posts and sometimes you wonder what planet she’s from. OK, darkboy tells me I’m costing these porn pic sites big amounts of money. Heck what do I know. So I suggest a pretty simple solution – I’ll pay them what it’s costing them out of my royalties and they’ll pay me a commission on business I send them. Sounds fair all round doesn’t it?

Meanwhile ace tells me its theft and morally wrong. WTF!

But now our odalisque one posts that it doesn’t cost them anything and there is no theft involved. She also says I was correct when I guessed that these sites could easily stop the practice if they so desired. Which means if true that our two bashers were trying to lead poor old scouries astray. Okay now I get it.

But the odalisque one finishes by mumbling something about pictures being posted that are too big to fit the screen. How could they be too big for the screen?

Drugs … I’m convinced it’s the drugs.

Being beautiful and having great breasts (because, of course, you have seen what we look like) make us qualify for your intelligence level? Oh my, I think you've just shown us exactly what level you are on.
