I don't think I'm guilty of very many of the sins detailed in this thread. I have given a few of my male characters rather large ones, but not unrealistically large, certainly no larger than I've seen and handled myself. Hey, it's entertainment! Big tits annoy the shit out of me. One of my favorite protagonists would be no larger than a B cup. I appreciated mother/son incest stories a hell of a lot less when my son started growing up. Objectively speaking, I can see where eventually some girls are going to think he's hot...but hell, I used to change his diapers. If I'm going to read an incest story, I'll take a brother/sister one. See, I never had any brothers...

Yet another overdone thing, regarding black folk: Ever notice how they all fall into the "lower income" category? Not once do I recall reading a story with a black man in it, that he didn't come from a "ghetto" setting. I don't think I've ever read a story where, "Gerald was a striking African-American man, sitting at his desk at the bank, in a three piece suit and very expensive shoes. I couldn't wait to see if I could lure him home with me and see if he'd give me a deposit in my safe deposit box."

I never actually ventured into the interracial category ... but I would have guessed that about the only cliches you might find there are black men with huge dicks and they are after big, white girls. That this ghetto thing is overdone too ... never would've guessed.

Your idea is great and I wonder why nobody used it. It would even lessen the pain of having yet another black man with a huge cock. If written well, his horse like cock wouldn't hurt the story a bit.

As for cliches in general. Like somebody already mentioned, it depends on the purpose the story has to serve. For the most part I read erotica for the same reason I watch a porn movie ... to get a good stroke out of it. And as masturbating is mostly about fantasizing, perfection plays a very big part in it. There are many girls that turn my head in the streets who are fare from perfect ... but (also like mentioned before) we tend to tune these impeferections out when it comes to our sexual fantasies. Thats why most female protagonists in stories have the perfect body.

But some of the mentioned gripes are really annoying. Sizes for instant. See the girl in my avatar? She's got the most perfect set of tits I ever had the luck to lay my eyes on (well she should have, since she became a playmate of the year) ... but the thought of mentioning in a story that they are 80D would never cross my mind. Same with cock sizes ... the general increasment of genitals in porn stories isn't much of a turn off for me, the actual numbers are.

This is a good thread. I must say that I've been successful in steering away from most of the pet peeves here, with the exception of a lot of vowels in character's exclamations. To some people that can be kind of a turn on, but I can see how it can detract. I'd like to find a better way, and will probably try the suggestions here.

I say the less detail about the characters the better. Let the reader decide if the man in the story looks more like Tom Selleck or Fred Flintstone. Let the reader decide if he has a dick so long that drags on the floor or he's just an average 6 inches. Let the reader decide if the woman in the story is a blonde or brunette. Let the reader decide if she weighs 110 pounds or 200. The less said about physical descriptions, the better.

No ages given, no body shapes, no breast sizes, no cock sizes, and the reader can fill in the rest of the details about how the people look all by themselves. The only thing we know about these characters is that they aren't hunks or babes by the "conventional" standards. But everything else is open to personal interpretation.

Very well stated; I agree wholeheartedly with this. Leaving the descriptions somewhat vague allows the reader to visualize them in his own way. It makes it easier to internalize the story, I think. When I write something, I'd like for the reader to be able to "put himself in it" very easily, and if you give too much physical character detail it can be almost impossible for them to do that.

I started off wth a couple of those cliche ridden stories which ironically have gotten the most votes lol. I personally think the best stories I have written have done away with all those cliches again based on real events, mainly how I lost mine. One which features a 19yo loosing his virginity to a BBW, large overweight lady basically features none of the cliches that have been listed so far. Neither of them have perfect bodies, both very insecure, theres no sex for at least 9 pages as its mostly concerned with establishing hte mind set of what makes them be together rather than the act itself so when they do finally have sex, there is a feeling that it is very much real. well, tahts what I was trying to write anyway.

Actually, when I was much younger, I used to get pretty damn wet. When I was so young and naive it didn't even occur to me that I could get my ownself off, and didn't have to wait for that until I was "old enough," or whatever, it used to embarrass me.

Many of those devices are common, and yes exaggerated. But throughout any storytelling the use of archetypes and cliches are common. I really beleive that the two stories, with the same plot (say, wife cheats with postman--the biggest cliche ever) can be totally different when it comes to the details; one can be awful and the other awesome. Good writers in any genre tend to take there time with descriptions to create the effect of being there. I personally think things like "huge cocks" and "gushing pussies" are going to inevitably find there way into erotic storytelling/porn the same way hoary, wise old magicians find there way into the fantasy genre; it's part of the playing field. But there are a million fantasy novels and only a few ever gain a popular audience (LOTR being the most popular nowadays). And thus is separated the wheat from the chaff.

Like a lot of people who have posted on this thread, I try to make the characters as realistic as possible, even when the stories are pretty far-fetched. I really like it when I get feedback that questions whether the events in the story actually happened or not.

I hate reading stories about the guy with the 10 inch cock fucking the perfect woman with gigantic tits. I'd rather read about average people who have qualities that make them attractive.

I think you could just say "he was huge" or "well-endowed" without really having to quantify what "huge" is.
